Just ordered new mono to put on the riggers. I am going with two lines per outrigger for the first time and they will be different colors. Also some wide track bars from sterling to beef up the spread.

Despite a lack of encouraging reports I took a long ride yesterday to look for Charlie. Very discouraging ocean is what I found...no life to speak of from under BI to under Nomans.

That is what I am hearing. Did you mark much?
A few boats tripped over some fish way off the edge, otherwise, slow.

BI south is devoid of tuna. Give it 10 or so days and the scene will be very different. Dangles you'll love those wide trackers trust me. Just got back from a way south trip to the southern canyons and it was insanely good. never caught as many YFT as I did that trip.

I’m gonna keep an eye on this thread. Once I’m a bit more confident the motor is in solid shape we are trying to plan a much less ambitious trip south of the Vineyard in early August. Staying in Falmouth this year specifically to shorten the run to that bite.

I don’t have heavy enough gear or a big enough gas tank for the bigger fish :)

Agree re this Thread. I used to do this high summer tuna stuff south of the Vineyard with my ultra slow but reliable Fortier. Completely over hauled it for reliability. So I am planning to take some time away from the warm weather doldrums beach fishing to do this. My years passed fish logs indicate I had many zero trips until the first week of August.

I need a good weather report to poke out 55 miles one way in a small slow boat. I would certainly welcome buddy boating this. I run out of Falmouth.

Awesome! I’m a complete stranger to this kind of fishing, so maybe I should start a “time to get embarrassed by what I think would work fishing for school tuna” thread... :)

For the smaller class of fish, what level of gear would I be looking at to chase them? And what style of fishing is it?

I’ve got bass conventional gear and was considering a ZX25 on a short stout spinning rod as well.

But wasn’t sure if this was jigging, suspending bait, trolling, casting at them, etc

I’m really really trying to avoid finding a fish that makes me go that route. While I’m sure the larger class of gear is in my future at some point, I have no interest in gauging my wife’s reaction to me coming home with a small car’s value in gear with a second child on the way.

So I’m hoping to find smaller fish to cut my teeth on, and maybe upgrade as the kids get to fishing age or something (or at least next season?)

My uncle hits that general area a lot and says the SBFT bite this year is absolutely dead. He's been avoiding the skunk by bringing a flat of butter fish all chunked up and tossing handfuls at high flyers to get the mahi fired up. Having fun with small ones on light tackle. He did get a really nice white marlin last week on a daisy chain style lure with a splasher bird in front and a skirted ballyhoo as the stinger. That was the first fish the made the 50W sing this year though. I guess its a good year if you like to tangle with the giants. The local guys I follow on social media seem to have a lot of trucks waiting at the dock, hoisting fish off the deck.

I'm headed out tomorrow to the popular spot to see if I cant get a bonito. Any tips? not looking for spots, just tactics.

It is more a case of the lack of thunnus that is causing the crickets Mike. Bones/albies are the same tactics: light leader of 12-15# floro and a small epoxy or metal lure of 1/2-1 oz. they are addictive

That was brief and a bit exaggerated when it went by I am hearing.
There seems to be nothing going on south of NE, including the edge... Maybe they hung in NY/NJ for too long and scampered by.

Watch, this will be a year they blow through the blackfish grounds in November while we are all anchored up watching....

Went to the general area I was targeting - SEC south in the 3-5 mile range offshore. Had sporadic tuna busting since sunrise along the 5-5.5 mile range. Couple miles south of Golf Ball decided to turnaround & work the 250-325' depth which was 3-5 miles offshore. Happy to share my son (with a little help from his Uncle & Dad) landed his first tuna.

We decided to drift a while and about 10 mins later a school of decent sized tuna started busting bait 50+ yds away but heading in our direction. We patiently waited and my son placed a great cast and was instantly tight. Fish was a mean bastard and we fought on spinning gear for ~1.5 hrs before we safely gaffed it.

Guppy - looks like we were in same general area, what type of boat were you on?
