View Full Version : Back Up!!!
JohnR 03-27-2001, 02:57 PM OK - board server has been resurrected (actuall rebuilt from scratch with a different OS and conversions, and...) ... What Happened?
A hacker had previously accessed my machine last week, and I'm sure many others. After cleaning out the "damage", there was still apparently some back doors open and the server that contains the board got trashed. Unfortunately, about 2 weeks worth of stuff (including my backup server) was lost... The server is rebuilt, locked down with the latest security fixes (until the next 12 year old with a little angst comes by and finds a hole in a Major Software Companie's server suite, just kidding, it's pretty tight) and is back available at blazing speed ;D
I'll get the rest of those posts back over later but please let me know if you notice any problems...
Thanks,
John

Don M 03-27-2001, 04:04 PM Great job for all you accomplished in such little time. My system with IE 5.5 seems to be loading slower than my laptop with IE 5.0. Let you know if it changes. I will be rebooting our server.
Fishpart 03-27-2001, 04:26 PM Much better, now if I could just hold onto my cookies....
I like the new format as well.
Got Stripers 03-27-2001, 05:07 PM That is fast, but take your time, I'm out of town on business until monday and I'm not taking my puter. Headed to PA on a 2 day business trip, than a 1 day guide trip Sat on the Susquehana for smallies.
I just hope all the rain they got as well won't screw up the fishing, but it should stabalize by Saturday...at least I'm hoping. April is almost here, so it won't be long before we are all happy campers again.

Don M 03-27-2001, 05:49 PM John:

Saltheart 03-27-2001, 07:30 PM Glad its working again. Seems to work well at my house. Good job John. I guess I don't understand why someone would put the time into getting nothing out of destroying something. They should take up fishing!
I dunno Saltheart....would you really want that loosa on "your beach" ??? I didnt think so.....
JohnR 03-28-2001, 08:52 AM Thanks everyone!!! I usually operate a semi-redundant board server but that was rebuilt and with me for the MSBA Show so there was no backup...
DonM - don't you have a scheduled weekly reboot of your MS-SBS? My 2 current best non-MS work servers are at 163&164 days since service pack applied and rebooted and my other "non-MS" servers are at about 80 days since last SP applied. My record production server is at 243 and the best I've seen was at 400+. No need to tell you what NOS they are running ;D ... I need to bounce my SQL7 boxes and PDC about every 2-3 weeks :'(
G'Luck, ahh working down there GS
Jenn - you read any Striper Books yet?
BTW - Anyone try out the SpellChecker?? :P
John...I did read "the Compeat Surfcaster" but what about these "stripers books" you speak of????!? :)
Slipknot 03-28-2001, 09:38 PM Excellant job keeping the board running. I don't know where you find the time. Just don't end up in the doghouse.
Have you been to the West wall yet?
JohnR 03-29-2001, 02:18 PM All kinds of goodies like "To catch a Bass" by Tim Coleman, "The Striped Bass" by Nick Karas, and the Daignault books (still interesting reading if a bit dated). You'd like some of those as they focus alot on your favorite hunting grounds on the Cape... Just keep in mind that some things he writes about, like graphite rods are no good, was from before you were born...
There are others but my brain is stuck in reverse today and there is a lot of garbage out going on right now :o ...
Thanks Slip - nope, haven't been to the Wall yet but soon, soon, soon ;D
Thanks John.....I think I will have to pick some of them up so that I dont have to sesort to reading "murder/romance" novels borrowed from coworkers!!! HA!HA! very pathetic I know!
now about this whole "before I was born" thing......I dont believe you are too far off either my dear........ :P
JohnR 03-30-2001, 09:44 AM OK, before you can remember anything but Superfriends and Mickey Mouse - howzedat? ;p I was doing a book search a couple months back and got some some old books but have been unable to get some of the good old surfcasting tales that Mike P recommended... I'll make a list of what books I have and maybe do a swap thing for regular members...
Don M 03-30-2001, 12:26 PM John:
Yes we are on a scheduled reboot. However, we had added some goodies and I believe there was a conflict.
Thanks
