It was a pleasure to meet you and BC at the show along with all the other virtual fishers . Thanks for those finely tied flys . I had a good time well worth the ride . When I came in the house after my ride home the kids told my wife " daddy saw santa again " ,wife just shakes her head . Man I have a great wife !
schoolie monster 03-28-2001, 02:29 PM John in drag... I think the beard would have to go... other than that, I'd still be scared.
Sorry, I couldn't make the show, but I was doing the one thing that would have kept us all away... fishing!
Sounds like it was a success. FW, look forward to fishing with guys again this season... hope you didn't sell all your flies at the show. Talk to ya soon.
John, sorry to hear about the hacker.
Fisherwoman 03-28-2001, 02:50 PM JohnR, IN DRAG< LMAO, that is too much, but just remember, I know what you drive, and if I see you I'm gonno kick your Butt!!!!
Was great having the booths side by side.
ChrisL, good to meet ya, have fun with the flies, "and the secret weapon". Let me know how it works out. Looking forward to seeing you again.
Schoolie Monster, hey buddy how was the trip? Catch anything? Got enough teasers for you to stock up on, missed seeing you at the show and looking forward to our secret spot, they are just around the corner now, I CAN"T WAIT!!!!!
schoolie monster 03-28-2001, 05:36 PM We had great weather and caught some nice fish. Karen was kicking my butt for the first couple of hours!
Our guide wanted to wait about an hour to hit the flats, so we started out fishing for ladyfish. These things are related to tarpon and jump just like 'em, jumping over and over. They were around 2-5 lbs. and were a blast on light tackle. They were tough to hook and tougher to land. We probably hooked 8 but landed only 3. We were also joined by a bunch of dolphins, so we were really having fun. Score= Karen 2, Greg 1.
We then headed for the flats to pole for redfish. Karen nailed a jack crevalle on topwater. Karen 3, Greg 1.
The sun got a bit higher, so we switched to plastic jerk baits and began to search for fish. I spotted a wake and threw to it and the fish hit. I fish mono, the reel had braid. I set the hook real hard and snap! Suddenly my wife is hootin' and hollerin' and she's on a nice fish. She lands a beautiful redfish. Karen 4, Greg 1. No panic.
After seeing a couple more fish who wouldn't take, we moved to some mangrove islands. I got casts to a couple more cruising fish who weren't interested. Finally, I found a hungry one and threw out in front of him... it is so cool to spot the fish, cast, and see the take.
It was about a 8lb. red. I was off the hook. We poled around a couple more hours, I caught a small snook, and another nice sized red. Then the wind kicked up and the sky became partly cloudy. We saw some more fish, but we were mostly spooking them. I wanted Karen to get another red, so I was letting her throw to most of the fish. She had two get on the lure, but no hookups. The conditions became tough.
Their slam is a red, a snook, and a trout (grand slam includes a tarpon, but they aren't running yet), so we focused the end of the day on trout. I convinced Tod, our guide, to throw since we were just drifting, throwing jigs.
He hooked something huge that we never saw... it finally snapped the 8lb test. He thought it may have been an early run tarpon but we'll never know. We caught some small jacks, hooked some more ladyfish (landing one), and Tod finally caught a small trout to complete a group effort slam.
It was awesome. Poling the shallows for a tough fish like reds is addicting. We were so intense... I've never seen my wife so into fishing. We both had a great time. If our casting hadn't been so rusty early, we probably would have had a few more fish.
We also had a great guide and if anyone is planning a trip to central Florida, I would be happy to give you his name, number, etc.
I'll put up some photos when we get them scanned in... gotta run.
JohnR 03-28-2001, 06:18 PM Schoolie, you never complained about the fish net before!!! Just Kidding (he always complains...)
Sounds like you two had a blast - maybe some year we'll get down there with you guys, maybe when son #1 is old enough to enjoy it. You know - I seem to reacll that Karen outfishes both of us when we are all out fishing, maybe I'm wrong but between your favorite local spot and Nantucket... Speaking of Nantucket and Karen - did she snap off any lures :P ??
As far as being a little rusty with the casting efforts, I did offer you a couple opportunities to get out for some early season schoolie casting action (at least not jigging) but you declined. If you had, maybe your wife wouldn't have spanked you so hard fishing the flats, hehehe. Besides, she casts like a girl (now d#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g from pies and rotted fruit :P )...
Saltheart 03-28-2001, 06:56 PM Smokey and I had a great time that day. Best part was meeting everyone.
:O well I would rather cast like a girl (I know I am not the greatest) than to cast and look like a frog trying to leap and going nowhere (C'mon you have all witnessed that at least once I am sure) Now I know I am the last one to be picking ....but have you ever just sat and watched........a few that I have seen I was surprised they werent hooking themselves!!!!! HEE!HEE!HEE! I know, I know, shame on me....and yes my mother did teach me better than that.....I just think its funny...
Oh...and I also forgot to address the "john in Drag" issue.....sorry dear....I still dont think so...although I do think you'd look FABULOUS in shades of misty blue or sea green :O
I dunno fisherwoman....we should hold a contest ........for one guy to win his way into girls day..... maybe who would offer us the sweetest deal or do the most outrageous thing....hmmm.....JUST KIDDING! psych! :* (sorry couldnt resist)
Also wanted to ask you....I should have picked up some of your "goodies" at the show....dont really know why I didnt (too much excitement maybe??) any chance of still having some and saving them them for me???
Clammer 03-28-2001, 10:11 PM hey F/w sent you a post buts its under Johns post/ been one of those days//

FW - Is it OK with BC for the Mystery Trip if some from here go??
Fisherwoman 03-29-2001, 01:19 PM Hey John, I will check with him tonight and get back to you but alot of members on this board signed up for MSBA, so I don't think it will be a problem, the more the better, but I will let ya know for sure.
You may also want to check with members of this board and see if it is ok with them. I will not be on the same trip as I will be doing girls day the same day. We have a hectic night tonight and a busy morning tomorrow, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.
JohnR 03-29-2001, 02:06 PM Cool,
Good luck with the show...
Fisherwoman 03-30-2001, 08:02 PM Hey John, talked to Baitcaster about the mystery trip and all that wish to come are welcome. I think it would be a great way for some of the people who signed up for MSBA at the show to get to know some of the members of this great board and vise versa. Should be a fun day!!! Keep in mind that it is also "Girls day" so I will be taking the girls, maybe at the end of the day we can hook up together somewhere. So let me know what you think.
