View Full Version : How long will Trump keep government shutdown
Pete F. 01-17-2019, 11:34 AM Are the Republicans getting fed up with Trump and the Trumplicans.
Between his hardline on the wall that only excites his base, the shutdowns effect on people and the economy, the likely downturn in the economy and Giuliani now claiming he never said nobody was colluding, many Republicans are wondering how this works for 2020, what Trump’s plan, if any, is and if this is the time to move him to Mar a Lago.
Jim in CT 01-17-2019, 12:40 PM Does the president own all shutdowns, or only when the president is a republican? Aren't the house democrats playing a role in this?
Slipknot 01-17-2019, 01:10 PM Repubs are fed up with Nancy and her zero stance period
Got Stripers 01-17-2019, 01:42 PM It will end when terrorists get the idea, this is the time to really get that one big hit they haven't had in so long, when our defenses are down.
The other scenario this ends, is when enough republicans defect the Trump camp as their 2020 re-election chances are starting to get to odds they don't like.
Trump is learning he's not the only one capable of playing hard ball and it's got to be making him nuts. It sucks for the government workers being held hostage, it sucks that this shutdown will in fact have a really bad impact on the economy, it's not a matter of if now, just to what extent. These career politicians all suck and Trump has shown that a fu*k up real estate (bankruptcy expert) tycoon isn't any better for America.
The calls from their constituents are likely starting to ring off the hook, eventually those will start to have an impact as well.

Trump last week: I’ll own the shutdown.
Or
Trump says he would be 'proud' to shut down the government over border wall funding
He clearly owns it .. you can’t blame that away

We all know that a wall isn't foolproof, no one is saying it is. We are saying it will HELP. We say that, because walls HELPED in San Diego and Yuma.
GS, let's say 300,000 illegals cross our border each year. Are you really going to say, that a wall won't reduce that number? NO ONE IS SAYING it will reduce it to zero. So you can stop pointing to examples of people circumventing walls. We know it happens.
But walls help reduce the number who cross. No one is saying anything else, and there is no rational argument against that. Telling us that some people bypass the barrier, doesn't refute the notion that walls block SOME people.
In the 20 years I've been following politics, I have never seen honesty and logic abandoned as completely as it has on this issue. Never.

The democrats would have no reason to compromise on the wall, without the pressure of the shutdown.
The entire GOP screwed the workers by not doing this when they controlled the congress. And today, the democrats are screwing the workers by refusing to agree to the wall, when they supported in in 2006 and 2013. They are only opposing it now, and saying the idiotic things they're saying (walls are immoral and don't work) because they have lost their minds with hatred for Trump.
Both sides hate each other more than they care about the workers. And this is why I'm conservative, I don't want the feds anywhere near my family's well being.

A wall the entire length isn’t the answer, THAT is the argument, taking the same money and spreading it out over various technologies including some sections of wall makes more sense. Will you just admit this is all political and to fulfill a campaign promise. You keep asking everyone to give Trimp credit where credit is due, well I think it’s time for you to at least be honest about his intent here.

"A wall the entire length isn’t the answer"
Then you'll be glad to hear, that's not what Trump is asking for, not even close. He wants to extend what we have, not run it the whole border. You don't even know what you're arguing against.
People die in car accidents. Does that mean air bags don't work? They help. H-E-L-P, help. They make it better than things would be without them. Not perfect, but better.
"spreading it out over various technologies including some sections of wall makes more sense"
Great, again I have good news, Trump also wants to incorporate different technologies - cameras, drones, more agents. Again, you are opposing Trump even when you want the same thing.
Walls HELPED in San Diego and Yuma, there is no arguing that. Why wouldn't they help elsewhere?

That's true. But let's at least admit that the democrats aren't opposing on principle, because they were in favor of this in 2006 and 2013. This is all about Trump.
Did the GOP block anything that they had previously been on record as supporting?
But you are correct, both sides care more about politics than they care about fixing things. We need to elect a different kind of congress.

First the part that consistently is overlooked here is Trump changed his budget for the Wall from 1.6 Billion that would have passed when originally presented to more than 5 Billion in December
I'll let you judge if they let anything thru, here is what the leaders of the House and Senate said at the time.
Here’s John Boehner, the likely speaker if Republicans take the House, offering his plans for Obama’s agenda: “We're going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell summed up his plan to National Journal: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
Jim in CT 01-18-2019, 09:24 AM pete i dont have any issue with them saying they want obama to be a one term president. iis nancy pelosi neutral in whether or
kit trump gets a second term? i have no problem with that at all. i’m not saying the gop was accommodating to obama, but i didn’t hear any of the republicans say in public they they were going to “impeach the mother——er.”.

The other party disagreeing is not obstruction, they are allowed to do that in this country. Elections have consequences.
Nothing new here except calling the president a MF, though who knows what Nixon's "expletive deleted" was.
Here is one and there is a list of people who called for Obamas impeachment for various reasons, feel free to hunt them down or Google them up.
At a 2013 town hall meeting with constituents, two years after Obama had released his long-form birth certificate to the public, Congressman Blake Farenthold said that Obama should be impeached due to conspiracy theories relating to Obama's birth certificate. Farenthold said that he thinks that "the House is already out of the barn on this, on the whole birth certificate issue."
According to a July 2014 YouGov poll, 35% of Americans believed President Obama should be impeached, including 68% of Republicans.
Wonder if there is a Poll for that on Trump
Though there is a poll that says:
Fifty-two percent of Americans don’t trust most, or indeed any, polls, according to a … poll :hee:
Jim in CT 01-18-2019, 11:26 AM pete i agree that disagreeing isn’t nevessarily obstruction. but opposing a wall that you previously supported, sure looks like pure obstruction.
nothing new? that idiot socialist from queens, alexandria cortez, isn’t new? the new congresswomen from MN who called jews “evil’, and who nancy pelosi put in the foreign affairs committee, isn’t new? democrats sitting during the SOTU when Trump brags about low black unemployment isn’t new? i don’t remember this lunacy before. calling a wall immiral and racist isn’t new? walls are racist? itnoring that the economy is roaring, isn’t new? boy when the economy improved under obama, that good news was everywhere.
yes elections have consequences. remember that if ginsberg retires.

If he directed Cohen to lie to Congress and there is proof (beyond Cohen's statement). It is game over. Forget any of the other potential collusion, inauguration or host of other potential funny business. Both sides should see that.
Pete F. 01-18-2019, 12:08 PM Read this and see if you can tell me what the Trump administration wants to do with a wall, notice that he asked for 1.6 Billion not 5+
https://www.gao.gov/assets/700/693488.pdf
I budget and plan construction projects everyday, that is not the way to do it cost effectively.
As far as AOC goes, while I don't agree with her viewpoints, she makes Trump look like an amateur at social media and hopefully will get more young people to vote. They likely won't all agree with her either, but perhaps the Republicans should think about how to attract them. They are not doing well with that demographic now and it will grow as all the Republicans get grayer and grayer.
I believe she called Israel evil and America's view of Israel and Palestine is a false tale, look beyond the propaganda that you are fed on that. There are more sides to that story than we are told.
Better look at Obama's SOTU and see who was sitting and when
The wall and racists is political spin on both sides.
When the economy improved under Obama, Republicans were blatting about the deficit, now with Trump the economy is still improving and Republicans as usual are growing the deficit with few complaints.
Whatever happened to infrastructure, anyways?

Jim in CT 01-18-2019, 07:52 PM Mueller's office issued a statement, saying that the Buzzfeed report that Trump ordered Cohen to lie, is false. Sorry Spence. according to Mueller, this is fake news. not al news bashing trump is fake. but some is. because the media, like
others, cares more about bringing him down than about the truth.
if mueller’s camp is correct, which they ought to know.
Jim in CT 01-18-2019, 08:26 PM CNN said this

but russia!!!

but trump is lying when he complains of fake news.

Yes trump is lying about fake news .?
And your making fake claims that CNN said the buzz feed story is 100% true
This may be the smoking gun in the Russia investigation is this your 100%

It doesn’t mean it’s fake, more likely just confused. Remember there are multiple investigations. The leaks may have come from the Southern District of NY investigation and not the Mueller investigation which doesn’t have any history of leaking.

this is hilarious on so many levels....
Jim in CT 01-19-2019, 07:30 AM Spence, it doesn’t mean it’s fake i guess. it does mean that buzzfeed and cnn cares
more about smearing trump than they cared about getting it right. they don’t like him, and instead of working to beat him fairly in the next election, they’re endlessly smearing him.
CNN is reporting today that Trump started the Chicago fire, and framed Mrs O’Learys cow.
this is all a joke. and i’m in favor of investigating the guy, but as often happens with the left, this is deranged, and contrary to the principles we were founded on. the media
isn’t looking for truth, they have already decided the desired outcome.

Mueller ever said
Anything that people
widely didn’t believe? you’re suggesting Mueller is
lying to protect Trump? nah you’re not biased!!
what evidence could
youmpoasibly have, that buzzfeed is correct and mueller is lying? Just because you WANT that to be true, doesn’t make it true. i know how sad you are. hang in there.
oh and Roman Farrow is also lying to make Trump look good?
you are bonkers.

So if you find your needle in 1 haystack .. it’s true. Like you can keep your doctor statement you present as a lie Constantly. Even though millions kept their doctor
Did Bush’s lie when he said no new taxes ? I suggest no because at that time he ment it.. then events changed
Also Miller’s Team did not say the story was not true or false. That it was not accurate now why would they frame it those Terms?

i don’t think obama lies about keeping your doctor, i think he was just wrong. i think he believed it when he said it.
you really don’t know how to make an argument. it doesn’t matter how many were able to keep their doctor...all that matters, is whether or not a
meaningful number we’re unable to keep their doctor. it’s like the wall, you think you can prove the wall doesn’t work by stating that it won’t stop everyone, when no one has ever said it will stop everyone.
you are correct that muellers statement leaves some questions unanswered. but roman farrow, a diehard liberal, refused to run the story because he doubted the sources. so it’s not just the mueller statement.
the press is, in effect, attempting a coup. they hate trump, they can’t bear to wait until the next fair election, so they decided to do everything they can to get him booted. obviously he’s not an innocent bystander, there’s smoke there that needs a fair investigation. but there’s also plenty of smoke with hilary, and the media would
not be doing this, not to this extent, if she had won.
the media isn’t seeking truth. they are seeking a way to get rid of trump. it’s not supposed to work that way. the country needs, really needs especially with a guy like trump, a free and fair and honest press. not one that attacks his wife’s wardrobe or christmas decorations.

Got Stripers 01-19-2019, 09:10 AM If the story is false, shame on them for fanning the flames, it’s not like the fires of desent needed more fuel. We aren’t going to get all the truth until mueller is ready to report his findings.

Slipknot 01-19-2019, 09:13 AM What this guy is pointing out - is exactly why the Democrats are raising holy hell about the shutdown. They realize a good portion of their voting base just lost their jobs.
Sooner or later a lot of these Federal employees are going to HAVE TO go find other jobs just to keep going. The Nightly News references this every single night when it constantly finds a new family that "only has a week of savings".
Trump must have heard somebody say "starve the beast" - and actually figured out what it meant.
