My biggest beef is that the art of critical thinking is dead in this country. People can no longer read the news as facts and deduce their own opinions. I don't wear or even have a MAGA hat but I have other hats that are red - amazing to see people I meet looking real close to what my red hat says like they're ready to pounce - in my case River Whyless, a band I love.

On Wednesday, the day after a midterm cycle dominated by President Trump’s divisive fear-mongering about immigrants invading our country, I listened as he told another of the lies for which has become so notorious. During his White House news conference he said, “I’ve never used racist remarks.”


I know the real Trump better than most. For 3½ years, I worked in almost daily contact with him at the highest levels of the Atlantic City casino empire over which he once held sway. I saw him treat black people and minorities as inferior. I heard him say vulgar, bigoted things and I rebuked him for them. But he did not quit. Indeed, he has continued it to this day.

Others who have known him, including his son Eric and former football player Herschel Walker insist he is not a racist. But I don’t see how anyone who has watched him across the 40 or so years could conclude otherwise. After all, he has been so public about it.

We can go back to the start of his career in the early 1970s and the outrage he expressed when Trump and his father were charged by the federal government with discriminating against African-Americans in the rental housing they owned in New York City. Trump’s response was to hire Roy Cohn, who then countersued, calling the Justice Department attorneys “storm troopers” and “Gestapo.” The Trumps ultimately agreed to integrate their buildings, but the Justice Department acknowledged they never really complied. Because they didn’t want to. As Donald saw it, and I remember him voicing a version of this idea within the inner circle of his executives on several occasions: “Blacks don’t want to live with whites, so why isn’t it OK for whites not to want to live with blacks?” I know that in similar fashion he despised the affirmative action guidelines (50 percent female and 30 percent minority at every level) we were required to implement to maintain our gaming license. He would say it was not realistic and a waste of money to train people who did not have the ability.

I recall one busy Saturday night, walking the casino floor with him, when he saw what he considered an inordinate number of black customers. “It’s looking a little dark in here,” he calmly stated. It was his way of telling me to limit our charter bus programs in urban neighborhoods. I ignored him and continued to run the business in the best interest of Donald, the bondholders and the employees.

To me its just a red hat. What I think it may stand for could be completely different than what others think - and that should be fine based on free speech and freedom of expression. After enough people in MAGA hats (not red hats, but red hats w/MAGA on them) yell racist things the data is credible enough to know that you are more likely to find a racist person who has a MAGA hat than you are in the general population w/o the hat. So people have said that MAGA really means nothing more than support of Trump and that support has no racial aspect to it. If that is the case why are the many instances of students at games chanting MAGA or Trump to minority students on other teams. Seems like these students don't understand the true meaning of MAGA.

Lastly Paul, some of the taunting by Trump supporters, is defensive. I'm so sick of the left trying to label us all as haters, that even I want to buy a MAGA hat and walk around the Wesleyan campus wearing it, saying "nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah" to everyone. DO you really not see what the liberal politicians and the media have done to the level of discourse since they turned on Bush? Trump has taken it to new lows without doubt, but it's been a long long time since political discourse was ethical. Hilary's deplorables comment was a perfect example. When unemployment rates were too high, when health care costs went up instead of down like was promised, when I couldn't keep the same doctor, when every time white on black crime creates a riot or protest but not black on black or black on white, when tax rates were too high, when lack of border security is causing real problems both drugs and criminal. These are just a few things why America wasn't as Great as it used to be. None of these things that I feel are important to Make America Great Again are RACIST. Almost all of the policies and changes that the Trump Administration has put through are making America greater than it was. Not that long ago, anyone could wear any hat no matter what and it wouldn't cause that person to get beaten up or chased out of a place of business. It has become so bad now, that your whole life can be ruined by wearing a hat. Social media has made it exponentially worse.. a quick screenshot showing only part of a story and BOOM.... you are now getting death threats and your school has to close... WTF... this is INSANE....

Improve access to healthcare, improve environmental responsibility, less war, a non-nuclear Iran, more equality for the LGBT community etc... pretty much all the stuff that Trump is working to reverse.

Now you could argue that in Trump's mind we weren't great under Obama for the types of changes he helped to usher in. So maybe MAGA really means kick people off of health insurance, trash the environment, more war, discriminate against the gay community etc...

Jeff, you are always going to have differences with neighbors but the idea is not to start trouble. Trying to prevent such an occurrence and the ability to handle such is also incumbent on the office. A healthy respect is more valuable than a smile and a bow in some instances. There are plenty of folks out there that you may not wish to have a beer with. There are also plenty you may not tempt by F’ing with them. Of course the rest of the world liked O’bama,he blew them all kisses and gave them money for ice cream.
