View Full Version : Plug Questions
Fishpart 03-29-2001, 11:59 AM I am buying plugs a few at a time to fill my surf bag. One thing that catches my eye are the Superstrike plugs. I notice they don't seem to be a popular as wooden plugs but they seem attractive to me because of the durability you get with plastic over soft pine in some cases. It goes without saying that they won't catch as many fish as the live eel plug ;)
Any input is greatly appreciated.
JohnR 03-29-2001, 12:47 PM Actually, the SuperStrike stubby needlefish can be pretty stinkin' good, even in plastic (they used to be wooden). I've used the black and the yellow before with success but I'll usually use the Gibbs. But the superstrikes are less $$ ...
Also consider changing the rear trebble to a single hook bucktail...
Mike P 03-29-2001, 01:08 PM Superstrike plugs are among my favorites. Without question, they are the best "big" plastic plug out there. I like everything they make except the biggest popper, the 3 oz "Littleneck" Polaris-style. Their bottle plugs and darters are on a par with Gibbs, and because they're molded plastic, you get better consistency. Every Superstrike darter and bottle swims the same way, but not every Gibbs swims similarly, and some Gibbs bottles don't swim at all.
Their 2-3/8 oz Littleneck popper is a dynamite plug, the best generally-available medium popper on the market. It sinks, but is weighted so that it's very easy to keep on the surface at a slow retieve, and it will even swim when you really crawl it. They make great needlefish, both standard and stubbies (they call their stubbies the Bullet).
One thing about their poppers--they're now selling floating models that don't cast or work as well as the weighted ones. You can tell the difference from the eyes. Sinking models have black eyes, the floaters have green.
Patrick 03-29-2001, 02:00 PM I've had a lot of luck with rattletraps. Not on big fish but schoolies and bluefish. They cast pretty decent but their hooks, especially the smaller ones are on the weak side. I have 2 Gag's Mr. Bunkers but no luck with them just yet. Maybe this year.
Also can't go wrong with poppers. Creekchubs are great lures. I have a few of them.
I don't usually fish with hard plastics or wood, but this year is going to change. Soft plastic teasers and hard plastic or wood casting lure.
CowHunter 03-29-2001, 06:37 PM The Mega Bait Plugs are real nice and catch lots of fish!!
Marc Z 03-29-2001, 08:59 PM Fishpart,
One thing about the needlefish, the SuperStrikes sink, the Gibbs float, so if you are fishing over a very rocky area, you will get hung up a lot less with the Gibbs, whereas the Superstrikes ride lower and get hung up. But both work in different situations, but both are great plugs (don't know why, they just look like a stick being pulled thru the water).

Superstrike also has one of the best darters on the market. They are totally through wired and work extremely well right out of the box(see attachment). However, we remove the back treble and add a single siwash with bucktail. The burnt orange squid color produced quite well last year.

JohnR 03-30-2001, 01:59 PM Don - I reduced the image size a little bit...
I never even associated that color with squid even though I see them like that all the time, I'll need to keep that in mind - thanks...

Clammer 03-31-2001, 12:53 PM Fishpart good to meet you Sunday, I think I should have stopped at the rod an reel . But no I bought all kinds of gear that proabaly won't get wet unless I fall in// should have just bought a case of eel hooks . oh well we'll see, hopefully on the flings// later
Fishpart 03-31-2001, 09:16 PM Clammer, good to meet you as well. I'm interested in hearing about the rod and reel. Have you had a chance to do any practice casting wit it to get the feel yet? I wish i had the resources to do a major stock up, but I am slowly accumulating items as I see a need for them.
Don't worry, I'll be down your way fishing before work before work once the water warms up a little.
