I was thinking we were overdue for a hurricaine to hit this year as well. It seems like it's been a while since the real deal has hit land around here, and it's only a matter of time before we see another one. Hope it goes off to sea.

What does a huricaine usually do to the fishing? I imagine it screws with it royally, but will the fall run be even somewhat salvageabele?

So... This Saturday - Sept 6, ~8:30AM High should be a good morning for fiching right?

And no more fishing until Late Sept/Early Oct after it all cools down...

I read about one cause being sea clams getting all busted up so the fish gorge themselves on them. I do remember a few storms that washed up piles of seaclams all along hull...

Hurricanes are funny - my pre hurricane fishing was always up inside tidal rivers but I'm told sometimes they feed NUTSO as the hurricane nears but that it sucks for 5 days or so after... But nothing is cast in stone and no fish are caught with dry lines...

It can take a while after big storm for the water to become fishable...I hope it goes out to see, I can live with a big heave for a week or so but wind in execesss of 70 is nasty. The water gets brown and it *could* push the main body of fish outtahere early. That would suck.

Depending on the amounts of rain and the storm-serge, it could realy dirty things up good. All the rivers, bays and estuaries could take up to a week to clean out good. Fish will head for cleaner water if it gets too dirty. Anyone remember when hurricane Bob came through here in 1991, took several weeks before things started to get back to normal. But that was on August 20th. One in September could push the fish out and around us. Remember the water is still cooler that usual, the fall run should start early this year.
Keep those fingers crossed...

If the storm blows through here quickly, and the run holds back - we could be A-OK

OR - if the storm lingers AND the run comes early we may see the fish go out around the storm skipping us entirely.

Hurricanes are obviously dangerous and unpredictable as many of you know. The fishing DEFINETLY HEATS UP BEFORE and then can take a while to come back after. But then is when it gets super hot. They are some hungry dogs after not eating for a few days !

Out here on nantucket we see the swell screwing up the water often. Fishing the lee side (north) holes and bars is best. Usually a lot more water moving which can make some areas act very differently. Obviously be careful. Rip currents can hurt you !

The Wam models show the storm doing the normal acceleration and swing to the east Friday-Sunday. We will see. Nothing ever certain there. I'll get ready for a surfing session.

Fish this week if you are on the south coast. Good SW flow and some cooling temps. The ocean temp here dropped from 72 to 70 deg in the last week. More drop after this rain. Activity has been excellent all over here. It is the people doing it wrong that are complaining.

Remember: East is most DEFINETLY not least !

I am sure we will all be watching this monster. Looks like we will be fairly lucky but that is relevant. It can miss us by 150 and still give the island 50+ kts and 10-20 swell. Not good beach fishing weather.

What's the trigger for the bite to heat up before the storm? I'm assuming it's the drop in barometric pressure but are there other factors?

The weather channel's projected path has Fabian nipping us on Sunday. May be a busy end of week boarding up windows and pulling the boat out. :(

Barrier beaches like Quonny and Charlestown - that land might not even be there after a Cat 3...

It is pretty standard history that before a serious hurricane there is usually a full on blitz. Many hiastorical accounts tell tale of the Blitz lasting right up to the start of the storm at the specific location.

Water Temps here north of Cape cod have beed dramatically lower then any of the previous seven years. this storm might push the warm water found Offshore inshore and the peanuts will come first. I might not be a scientist but I would suggest that this storm might get the fall run moving real good ,as opposed to blowing the fishies out of here.

I've read (and believe) that a fish feels the Baro change in it's swim bladder and responds. When the pressure decreases they know ;)

Increase in atmospheric barometric pressure is concomitant with the onset of sudden decreased pressure in Bassmaster's gas bladder. :hee:

i love fishing before a hurricane hits! i have some awesome pics of me and my dad fishing watch hill when i was about 10 as a hurricane was coming ashore. you can see little me casting into what looks like a wall of water coming right at me. the fishing was AWESOME that day! the waves were well over 10' high. white water was everywhere, as were the bass.

The heave should start late tommorrow on the Cape. The bite should be ON at night. I might have to spend some time on the sand.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms were continuing to affect the outer-waters to south of Block Island...to the waters south of Marthas Vineyard. Dangerous lightning...torrential rain and wind gusts to 30 knots will pose a risk to any mariners. Some of these thunderstorms will move into Nantucket Island through 3 PM. Hmmm that forecast is better than I anticipated.....Swells over chop anyday.....

I think that forecast is for a 2-4' wind chop...the swell is expected to be 7' with 7-10 waves on south and east facing beaches.
I think I will hang out on the lee side of the island this weekend. (but surf fish in the crashing suds southside at night...... :-)
Off shore could get too snotty where I was planning to go...we will have to see how this shapes up. If it is only a 4' swell that is nothing.

lots of wave action outside Scituate HArbor this AM.

There were some huge swells off the Newport area Sat. A couple nuts on jet skis pulling their buddies into position to catch waves breaking over the reefs. Very cool to watch- from a distance.
