Thinking about firing up a few plugs since I’m home, used to use Val-oil but not an option anymore.

What’s everybody using for a sealer these days? Is BLO/MS still the go to or are other options being used?

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

60%/40% gloss spar varnish/ mineral spirits. If u can find pure gum turpentine all the better. Soak room temp most woods 45 min. Watch maple. Weigh plug first (grams) then check after 10min. Maple has tubular end grain and may get heavy if left in long. Heating maple sucks in oil quick. Too quick!! Believe me.

I used to use propionate dissolved/thinned with acetone

I you are just fishing them yourself and it is cedar, skip it and just prime
if Maple, thin epoxy

I should make some plugs again, have not for years

BLO/MS 70/30......soak for 1 minute, wipe dry and let air dry 5 days maybe less if they sit outside in the sun.:btu:

DISPOSE OF RAGS IMMEDIATELY IN BUCKET OF WATER OR FIRE PIT!

I only make about 100 plugs a year and turn everything out of AYC. No need to seal Cedar.

I have been tying Tail Hooks. VMC 5/0, 3X Siwash. If you had a plugs that was 6" 2.75oz and a metal lip swimmer would you have a problem with 6/0 4X? I found a bag of 100 in the back of the shop. P

Paul depends on what action u prefer in the plug. Many time a slower tail action is better especially in a sub surface diver.
The 6/0 is a couple grams heavier.

I've got to tie up a couple of 6/0 and see the difference. Thanks for the input
