if I charged up my dual batteries & left the switch on [ON} & both were dead < then charged them again & took the charger off but left it on all again .will a dead battery kill the other ??? that,s what seems to be happening ..

Actually, even without shorted plates, if the bad battery won't hold a charge it will also drain the good one down to nothing.

With the switch off I’d say both bats are isolated from each other and everything else on the boat unless u have a dedicated feed to the bilge pump...

I was told 5 years is normal bat life....

The good battery that is charged to the max. voltage will lose voltage even with the switch off because it is trying to charge the low voltage bad battery.
Both batteries are wired in parallel so if you want to saved the good battery from losing voltage disconnect the positive terminal from the bad battery until you get a replacement.

It is possible the bad battery has a corroded terminal and not charging properly, cleaning the terminals with a wire brush and charge both batteries, see what happens.

I’m using my homemade eel trap, took the one way door off at the end of the inlet.... right now it’s baited with crushed crab in a bait bag for the first time,,, ran out of last years squid,,, time will tell.... :-)

Mike, whenever I had one battery go bad, I always replaced both. Just made sense.

BJs has good marine batteries. I always used Interstate because I use to have a contact. Guy retired.

I write the date I buy the batteries on them with a sharpie... An ACR is a worthwhile investment and install... no more playing with battery switches, both battery stay charged.

Automatic charging relay..what they do is combine batteries during charging once the primary battery reaches 13.7 volts, they will drop out around 12.2 so the bulk charge goes to the primary.. they've the best, most practical way to eliminate charging issues on outboard

Basically both batteries are combined for charging when engine is running. Then separate once engine is off. One battery for starting, one for everything else

Yes they do, but if you leave both M on and something drained one, BOTH are dead... it's just one way to make life a whole lot easier.
