View Full Version : Don Michaud, R.I.P.
JohnR 06-22-2020, 11:08 AM I just saw Krispy posted on FB that Don Michaud has passed.
You all might remember Don from Stonington Marina and Kayak Outfitters, and before that from Weekapaug B&T, or simply the way I remember him, jigging the inside of Quonnie Breachway while the rest of us Schmoes drifted the dropping tide.
We watched the Red Sox come back against the Yankees in Game 4 ALCS in the Cottage a bunch of the guys rented in October every year. Johnny Habs was there.
He was always nice to my kid, to me, and everyone on this site.
We held many of our fishing get togethers at Weekapug and then Stonington and he would keep the shop open all night for us. We had a fund raiser back in 2005 when Don came down with cancer, almost died, but battled back hard. He used to help Jim and Steve with the MDA Tourney.
He was a great member for the RI/CT Fishing Community, a great guy, and someone I call a friend.

piemma 06-22-2020, 02:45 PM Don was a super nice guy and will be missed. Saw him in 2018, the last time I was in the surf regularly and stopped by to see him.
chris L 06-22-2020, 06:06 PM That is truely SAD ! Don was a fantastic human being , He was always willing to let me get eels around the clock and pay him the next time I saw him . And he was awesome to my girls everytime he saw them . I had the priviledge to fish with Don on multiple occasions and it was always a great time and a classroom for me . He had a wealth of knowledge and experience .
Plus he played for the Detroit Red Wings in the N.H.L's hayday
God Bless You Don
Your Friend Always

nightfighter 06-22-2020, 09:36 PM Sad to hear. He had family up this way in Salem. Quiet, soft spoken guy. Delivered my kayak to my house I had bought from him, new. along with a rod I had him build for kayak fishing. Wish I knew what that blank was... It was still my go to live bait rod last I fished two summers ago... I tried to look him up maybe a year or so ago to figure out what that rod was. Think he built them on either a muskie or salmon blank....
tlapinski 06-23-2020, 06:53 AM Don was a great guy. I spent many, many hours talking fishing and other things with him over the years.
pbadad 06-23-2020, 07:24 AM Don was my first surf fishing contact almost 20 yrs ago. By phone then talking on where what and how. Him along with Charlie gave me the tools to start this hobby. I also joined my first fishing club with his encouragement, Weekapaug Surfcasters. RIP

Justfishin' 07-01-2020, 05:12 PM Wow, thats sad...
I hadn't seen him in several years, way back when it was he that introduced me to fishing Quonnie both inside and on the end when I stumbled on to it one late night. And a few nights later when I went back he introduced me to Habs and his son, barely a teenager at the time..... and he out caught us all.
I've missed seeing him for several years, now gone.
Tight lines Don
