View Full Version : Fall Run?
Did my annual north shore striper trip around south end of P.I. Trolled
plugs, drifted mack chunks and clams, picked up two or three schoolies
with my buddy. Dunno folks, it ain't what it used to be a while ago.
As John Milner says in American Graffiti.
"The pickins are really gettin' slim. The whole strip is shrinking. Ah,
you know, I remember five years ago it would take you a couple of hours,
and a tank full of gas to make one circuit. It was really somethin'."
Maybe I was just a little late (a guy I met on the way in had picked up
a couple of keepers the week before on a T and W), but it's been years
since I've caught anything good in the fall. Is there a fall run anymore?
Is anyone getting anything worth bothering with in the fall? It sho' ain't me.
ProfessorM 09-29-2020, 09:19 AM It already happened. Past decade or more I always felt it happened in August.

Been very quiet for about 3 weeks, that place was hopping all summer, I mean "old days" type fishing, then the pogies left the river and it all went silent, as I've reported earlier, right now it's just schoolies and a few lost bluefish, I'm sure a few fish will venture that way( I know there are a few decent fish in PI sound , but I cant be bothered), they always have, they always will make a shoeing along the beach and in the river, until there are no more, but I aint waiting on 'em, we used to get good fishing into November, but as Paul so painfully pointed out, it already happened.. there are still a few fish in Maine, but we are unlikely to see them, they will ride the wave of sea herring out over the ledges and into block island..I put in a few hours last night on some prime water on a prime tide, nothing but a few 17" schoolies ( and a worn out tired shoulder) to show for it...I took the boat home, anything I do now will be from the shore...IF I I do anything.
Rockport24 09-29-2020, 10:52 AM Been a while since I've been on here! good to see everyone!
This post is timely because I basically came to post the same exact thing. Now that I have a boat I mainly fish the PI area. Trolled all over creation on the beautiful day we had on Sunday and only a few schoolies to show for it. Sunrise was fun for topwater schoolies inside the sound.
I agree that the past few years it's been a late August/early September. I had a nice fish around PI on Sep 6th this year, then it was basically over after that. Oh well, until Spring!
Used to be I did well up there a little after mid September. Will definitely have to slide it up some.

Paul, it happened in August all the way back to 1996. I had several epic nights at Ballston in front of the big dune and on "The Back". August 16, 1996 46# on and eel on a 9'Fisher blank and a 704Z.
August 18, 1996, 49# at High Head near the first Hole to the left. August 20, 1996 47, 43 40# at the Mission Bell.
No fishing from the beach like that anymore. Now these clowns at the Canal hook a 20# fish, kill it taking pictures to post on FB. Hell, we threw back 35# fish because they were too "small".
I am convinced that we we'll never see the halcyon days again no matter what conservation measures are taken short of a full moratorium.
spence 09-29-2020, 12:21 PM And who in the hell convinced me that the new moon on BI in November was ever a good deal? We did that like 2 or 3 times. Just froze our asses off didn't catch much and Rockhound dropped my fish.

God, i will go to my grave with the look on your face. As i recall, the right side of SW Bar, pitch black and a 4' Swell. AND it was a decent fish...over 20#
RRH. gills it, unhooks it, unceremoniously I might add, and lets it go. Doesn't say a word. LEGENDARY!!!
bloocrab 09-29-2020, 03:16 PM There's a surf-lunker or 2 out there..........somewhere, at least any hope I have forces me to believe that.
For the guy who doesn't go to catch, but goes for the simplicity or rather serenity of fishing...that fish is lurking in the shadows, slowing perusing each crevice of each boulder field...not rushing its' search as the water is still warm enough and it knows it still has time. It just inhaled a small sea-bass....there's no short of those out there.
The missing ingredient for most is patience. Being accustomed to finding fish or somewhat knowing their haunts and predictability...patience is in short order. (Myself included).
With the lack of fish and lack of patience...it's easy to surrender. As saddened as the absence of the Stry-ped-one has left me, I'm thankful for the other species that have somewhat filled that void.
Fall Run?, let's get real here . .... they don't exist anymore and haven't for quite some time. My definition of a "Fall Run" are large masses of fish moving together with one purpose...not a few fish here and there or a push of fish that got noticed passing thru the canal...
Those large bodies of fish that used to patrol the shoreline, close enough that no water-craft was needed are much smaller now, so much so, that they make it by unnoticed. Sure, the boats fishing BI, RP, FI etc...may not notice it as much yet, but those stuck aground are the first to experience the reality of our current situation.
With that being said, I'm not going to turn into one of those nay-sayers...if I catch, I catch...if I don't, I'll savor what little time life allows me to wet a line.

Fishing doesn't suck.... it's what I find most satisfying and honestly what I love doing most. The availability of certain stocks suck, fisheries management has sucked, shore access sucks.... but no, not fishing.
Getting old doesn't suck.... some don't have the luxury of getting old, they pass on well before their time, so appreciate getting old, no matter how tired, battered and ill you may become. Life gives opportunity to those who take advantage of it.
Although it may be sad to look back on the old days, it brings many of us very fond memories of times on the water, times with friends that may no longer be with us. Without those memories, it's a much more lonely world. Enjoy reliving those memories, whether with friends or alone...for some, memories are all that remain.
And lastly, this site isn't sad.... it's the Fall Run that's sad....
Well, the site is what the people and the fishing are. I mean, if you look at the join dates for most of the people on here, most date from more than 10 or 15 years ago when the fishing was good, so now we’re all 10 to 15 years older. There are almost no new posters because there is no reason for there to be; there aren’t enough fish around for new people to bother fishing for them.

MAKAI 09-30-2020, 09:04 AM Seems like a thousand years ago..
This used to be Nirvana for me on the back beaches of CC.
September to early November.
Pushing in the little boats and drifting eels just offshore by day, then eeling or plugging the dark. A lot of extraordinary fishing.
What I loved best was the heavy NW wind fishing. Humping surf, wind in your face, surge and sweep of the water. Every bit of me felt super alive.
Now my fall is foolish albies and big brown trout fishing in the night.
Adapt to the new.
Higgie 09-30-2020, 09:24 AM Dusted off the surf gear and got into some fish last night in a small state with a lot coastline. Felt good to feel some drag being pulled and on a new 11” flat glide needle I started making this past winter

Very well said my friend.
Got Stripers 10-01-2020, 07:19 AM Agree, fishing in and of itself never sucks, even thou I don’t have the desire to get out as often; when I do it’s always rewarding. Sometimes the fishing isn’t great, but it’s a rare day if I’m not catching something. If I were just targeting stripers those rare skunks might come more frequently, but for me it’s about bending a rod and bringing home some eaters not trophies.
This site like so many other things, suffers from the move to other social media platforms, but I still enjoy this site for its community, friendships and lack of in your face advertising.

I had some epic nights in November on MV, back in the 90s. Vet's Day weekend, virtually no one out on the beaches. Dragging a 3 oz jig through the old rip at Wasque, with a good SW blowing against the ebb, was a can't-miss deal.
Even as late as 10-11 years ago, you could still get schoolies and an occasional keeper at the East End of the Canal in early December. Lots of fun on an 8' rod, Sluggos on light jigheads.
Clammer 10-02-2020, 04:15 PM there will ne schoolies around thru most of November . I don,t even fish the beaches until mid Oct at the earliest ><>
Li.fish.Vt: John, you really need to fish more. Stop sitting around all day, wishing you were catching. Honestly, I don’t think you put in enough time...
With that said, hands down one of the most fun seasons I’ve ever had. Barely fished early on with the virus and a certain tackle shop sending the masses to other people’s back yards (literally). Started back up in Aug. Fished all over the place. Learned to accept my limitations. I just can’t wade bubble weed anymore with a knee that’s had 2 ACL reconstructions and a meniscus before the age of 35. Instead I worked with what I could. Couldn’t get in the boulders, so I started fishing spots where they met sand. Very rewarding and so much more enjoyable than constantly watching the horizon to see which roller wants to ruin your night. This allowed me to dial in on what I was doing and the results were very rewarding. This also led to me not fishing my favorite stretch as I took a bad spill back in June. I basically fished what I consider B+ spots. It was fun as hell and they produced like they would’ve back in the early 2000s. Fished with some great people. My circle is as tight as ever. Great fisherman, even better friends. The most epic sunrises and sunsets and that’s saying a lot because if anyone used to follow me on IG they know I’m a light show junkie. Highlight of the year was seeing a white shark from the beach. What a massive beast. Impressive animals. Wild seeing a pyramid move through the water 75 yards off the sand.
I’m done as my finances have been exhausted and there’s no fish left to be caught. (it’s over), but for me, this season was one for the books.... truly a “catching is a bonus” type year.

Yeah, that’s a better way of looking at it. 15 to 20 years ago, I went out hoping for keepers. Now, as the years of quality lifetime are dwindling, I just enjoy being OTW, and am glad to catch anything. Heading out this afternoon for a few relaxing hours of C and R on my own pond (without having to worry about missing the Pats game, due to COVID 19).

LOL Not true. Ive been known to pitch or 3 way an eel from time to time, pre-injuries. I enjoy vertical jigging for BSB while waiting for the albies to pop up. But ever since my last surgery, I just feel like a liability. Wouldn't want to ruin someone's day because I couldn't get my legs under me.

nightfighter 10-05-2020, 06:40 AM Oh, can I relate, Bart... Accepting limitations. Not wading where the others do.. Even this year not accepting invites to the offshore tuna hunt as I am still not sure I am stabile enough on my feet... Hell I only got out on my own boat 6-7 times. I too had many surgeries (5) on my right knee before getting a total replacement. I knew in the back of my mind that I would eventually need one, but am urging you to do everything you can to build up yours now. The TKR is not a silver bullet. That said, most are not as compromised as you and I were/are going into that surgery. High respect to all who have experienced it. I am much improved and actually walking well at 16 plus months post op, but getting this body in motion is not at all as easy as it was before the surgery.

Thanks for this post. I had basically resigned myself to the fact that I was going to need double knee replacements, but I’m too young for that. Just going to keep working on my legs and overall health. I need a scope that I put off because of the virus. Still have a loose body under my knee cap from the last surgery that doesn’t allow my knee cap to track properly. I already have arthritis at age 37.
I want to stay in this game for a long time. I was busting Li Fish.In.Vt’s balls because John is an absolute beast and could run laps around people my age. He’s taken care of his body and he keeps moving. I want to be able to do the same 20 years from now.
Best of luck with your recovery.

This!
pbadad 10-05-2020, 05:15 PM Its been 10 months since the left knee replacement. I say its a 7 on a scale 1-10. Much much better than the old knee. No real pain just dealing with nerve numbness on rt side shin. I also have a slight clicking from under the patella(knee cap). Riding stationary bike 30 minutes a day helps getting the motion. The problem is the left knee needs doing soon. Im nursing it with a series of injections until this covid #^&#^&#^&#^& is over. Other problem is using more of the good knee to help the left one.
Rock hopping is basically a thing of the past. Hope to fill the void with beach fishing next year and maybe some easy shore formation. At 70 I still want to 50 or 49. LOL.

I am most fortunate and grateful that my left knee is in excellent shape and shows great spacing between the bones. (See x-ray) My first surgery for torn ACL was September 1975.So that left knee has carried the load for 45 years before the TKR.
I have accepted that this is likely a two year recovery to see what my maximum gain will be. So that puts me into Memorial Day 2021. I am grateful to be walking, working, and making the most of what we have while waiting for 2020 to pass.
My apologies for the hijack of the Fall Run thread. I miss the old days running up and down beaches chasing blitzing bass and blues... Many an afternoon there would be guys in business suits, dashing barefoot into the mayhem, rods in hand, during their commute home.
The knee replacement deserve its own thread, if only for those who might be on their way to considering having such a procedure. As Clammer says, appreciate what you have... in this case, your mobility.

Yep. I can already feel it. Subconsciously compensating for/protecting the injured knee.

Thanks! It must be from reeling in all those fish. It certainly isn't from all of the ice cream I've been eating.
Rockfish9 10-15-2020, 01:53 PM Still some pretty decent fish here, I haven't
Been, damn shoulder is acting up, but one of the guys I work with that's a dedicated
Surf that, took some advise I gave him and has been into fish outside the slot to about 30lbs( my guess by the picture).
All on needle fish and Danny's I gave him.. still hope for some of you southern guys for a few quality fish.thought I'd pass it along.

It’s been tough Ross,,, lucky to get one or two days a week with all the wind... poor Chris brings the boat up for 3 weeks and lucky to get out only several days!! But they were good
Clammer 10-17-2020, 06:37 PM B IG shore bite today …..like the Octobers of back in the day ><
But the was a super low tide to cash in on ..
15 minutes .. 30 Asians crabs & 35 little necks . no rakes or boots :sled:
SAUERKRAUT 10-19-2020, 01:08 PM Only the belly of some of these occasional fish indicates to me that there is a "Fall Run" in effect. If I find anything at all, it is an individual fish.

Got Stripers 10-19-2020, 03:34 PM Good day off Saconet in friends boat, easy ten fish pick on good tog and while on first spot we watched acres of fish and birds, but we came for tog. On pulling first set anchor we motored over and discovered they were micro stripers as suspected, but we picked up some nice chunky sea bass dropping my 4” split tails to the bottom under the schoolies. Ironically in all the years of fishing in multiple boats I’ve never been boarded to check fish, today was a first at the ramp, no issues of course.

Same here. Not my best in terms of poundage, but the consistency has been amazing, and I’ve fished all over the place.
Those saying there’s no fish left simply aren’t fishing or just don’t see a reason to fish if large aren’t readily available, which is fine, but to say there isn’t a Fall Run taking place is incorrect. Talk to anyone who lives by the water down this way and they’ll tell you it’s the best they’ve seen in 40 years.

My buddy was standing next to a guy the other day who caught a 20” BSB on a storm shad.

Because you bought a boat? :faga:

No. haven't gone for stripers yet.
My wife calls it the dingy and has no interest in going out in it.
Big Dave 10-20-2020, 12:39 PM It already happened. Past decade or more I always felt it happened in August.

Hey Paul long time no see. I've been saying that for many years now. For me anyway it usually picks up around the 3rd week in August and slows up the first couple of September. During that time the bite on skins can get pretty good. Then is just drops way off like a switch has been flipped. Some fish stick around for a while, just not like the big schools eating as they go by. All on the west as well.
RIROCKHOUND 10-20-2020, 12:42 PM No. haven't gone for stripers yet.

Keep the bedroom stuff off here... Oh you said 'out on it'

I took Paul out to the dark side in my fiberglass jetty many moons ago. Put him on some good fish if I recall. Figured he would have gotten a boat sooner...
PaulS 10-20-2020, 04:23 PM Some very good fish Ross! And we also went surfcasting although I can't recall if it was the same year. I would rather surfcast than boat fish.

SAUERKRAUT 10-27-2020, 08:32 PM Ahh yes. I stand corrected: A great Fall Run is afoot. Instead of being skunked like in the last 3 trips to the lousy beaches that I monitor and fish-- I caught 19 bass the other night. Maybe No. 20 would be a fish greater than 28 inches; but this did not happen despite the great Fall Run.

That’s unfortunate. I know you fish traditionally big fish spots, but you might want to switch it up.
I held off on replying because my buddies were into fish up to 25#s (several between 15-25#s) the night prior to, and the following day, when you posted.

piemma 10-29-2020, 01:51 PM I haven't posted about the surf but I'm fishing 2 or 3 times a week like the old days. I've been into decent fish ( you know what I mean when I say "decent".).
No spot burns but SoCo on the East Side has been my "go to". So those of you who know me and where I fished 20 years ago, know where I am!

Probably. Fishless, Birdless, Baitless, Lifeless.
Just returned from a recon road trip to my Alma Mater. A readily visible biomass event difference.
Rmarsh 11-02-2020, 05:34 AM Fished saturday night...got down to low thirties.... soaked an eel for a couple of hours and got skunked......done for 2020.......throwing these leaky waders and pos boots in the trash.
Got Stripers 11-02-2020, 09:52 AM Driving to BJ's this am, I saw a guy walking along the street boarding white horse beach in Plymouth carrying a striper I'd estimate a maybe 20lbs, my guess is it came from the salt pond.

Fatty but probably in the slot.

fishbones 11-02-2020, 01:33 PM Everyone should pack up their gear and stop fishing. There are no fish around and the weather is cold. Lots of good stuff on tv to watch for the next 6 months.

I think you and I discussed the weight of the fish this year and how they seem to be similar to years ago. My longer fish have all been fat this year.
