We kicked the season off with a trip to SW Florida. From shore we got a bunch of schoolie snook, sheepshead, trout and tons of catfish. Had 3 charters lined up but 2 got blown out. On the 3rd we got a 100 pound tarpon, some better snook, a spinner shark and 1 pelican. Chrissy my 11 yr old hooked up the tarpon so that was entertaining

seems like the season is off to a great start...I warmed up on 2021 a bit south on some southern species....we landed tarpon, bonefish, redfish, jacks, snappers and sharks from the paddle boards, had a shot at a nice permit as well....the wind was brutal even by the standards of the locals in the middle keys but it's such an amazing fishing environment that you just deal with it and try to hide from it as best you can....hard to adjust to our current temps now and get motivated to chase stripers :rotf2:...this was a camping trip....through the month we only had 1 day with a little rain mid-day, had a couple of violent overnight storms that made things interesting...it's a great escape....added the new GoPro9 for this trip as well, great little tool for capturing things and easy editing on my phone to create quick 1 minute clips....amazing results when there is a lot of light and contrast and the subjects are near...not so good in low light and distance but still playing withy the settings and features...plus the underwater shots are fantastic

Not big by old standards, but it was a pleasant surprise to catch one way up inside BB, while targeting sea bass. The last weakfish I caught was also on one of my 4" split tails off Westport maybe 15 years ago, looking forward to something new for dinner tomorrow night. Another kayaker said he also dropped one at the yak, so a few must have been up inside.

Yup uploading pics on this site is bizarre. If I preview a pic and it’s rotated wrong, I have to delete it, open it in paint. There I rotate it, save it, then open it again to rotate back to the way it looked to start and by the way the exact way I uploaded it to start. I upload it to my post again and miraculously it’s correct, when nothing changed other than a back and forth in paint to change nothing, bizzarro world on here.

When I saw the tide and sea forecast yesterday am, I knew it would be a good tog bite in the skinny water on the incoming. I love fishing freshwater bass spinning tackle for tog with plastic. It was a fish on every cast for a while, my usual 3/8 oz. kalin ultimate jig head and my olive or smoke 4” split tail. It’s amazing how aggressive tog are when those conditions line up, good running tide, some good swell to generate lots of white water, they are opportunistic and will readily hit plastic. Not sure I’d take a tippy kayak as close as I got today, but my PA14 is like a big surfboard, just rides right up and over them.

Was met at the dirt ramp by an EP officer, he measured my one keeper tog and then insisted on seeing my license. I’m sweating bullets in the midday sun and trying to find the picture I always take of the license, pain in the ass. Go harass the poachers on the bridge, no you have to find the only guy nuts enough to peddle out to fish the slop on Hens and Chickens ledge really?

scottw
07-20-2021, 05:41 AM
the poachers and litterers are too much trouble....because I have spin and fly gear, shore and paddle board stuff I print a bunch of copies of my license at the beginning of the season, put them in little zip lock bags and shove them in all of my gear, can't always remember where I put them but I figure my odds are good for finding one if I need to present one:rotf2:

But

Alls it takes for the epo is to radio your name on and verify. Takes less than a minute. So as long as you got it. No need to have on your person as far as I see it. Big they don’t like that answer

In this day and age, a Statie that pulls you over knows the status of your license, registration, insurance, and inspection before leaving the cruiser. All MSP cruisers, and indeed, most town police cruisers have a MDT on board, linked to a central data base. I suspect that the formality of "license and registration, please" is just to keep you there while they run a warrant check.

Finally got out in my Son's new ride, the boat is a sweet ride, to bad there weren't more fish around. We did pick up some schoolies and got into some decent bluefish feeding around the glades in Scituate, but no fish of any size. The only thing missing is a long shafted minkota riptide trolling motor and I'd call it perfect.

When I flipped from freshwater bass to stripers, I was fishing in a basstracker v17 ( very wet ) and Scituate was where I always launched. Fished a milk run of ledges up to outside of cohasset harbor and even up inside little harbor tide permitting. A slow day was 50 stripers with usually a keeper or two mixed in. Hence the name of my baits Ledge Runner Baits.

Spent allot of time over the last 27 years in the rocks too

Occasionally still some jumbo bass in those rocks but it just isn’t like it use to be

I fish the north river up to hull allot
Chunked allot. Bump troll live bait mostly now. The last many years lots of 25 to 32” fish but tough for large consistently

I catch some of my biggest up the river. Started to get ok this year then all the heavy rain put a damper on things.

I remember one day I wanted to take one of my freshwater bass club members out but the mouth of the river was too nasty so I took him way up inside just above bridge st and we hammered big bass with 1oz rattle spots. He’d never caught a striper and his first was probably pushing 25lbs.

I was pushing the envelope with the freshwater basstracker and the upgrade to the Lund was a bit safer, it wasn't until I upgraded to the McKee Craft 196CC I was drier and safer. Regardless of boat or kayak, I'm always in the white water wash, it's where I like to fish and those rock fish like it too.

Been working on a job so close to the water..... it has been a big distraction. Monday I watched as a boat....belonging to someone I know scour the area out in front of me. I couldnt tell if he was catching or chasing.... even with my binocculars. It was frustrating for me to have to be working on such a fine day.

So yesterday I called my nephew.....who has been on a list of people I have promised to take out on my boat...and he joined me. We had barely backed the boat away from the ramp and there were fish breaking on the surface all around us. I was driving in the river current and couldnt make a cast...but he did and immediatley hooked up with a schoolie striper. I was intent on getting out front so we headed out the mouth of the river and it wasnt long before we found birds working on bait. We both hooked up right away on some very good sized bluefish. Did a lot of cruising as I let my nephew take the helm....I know he was just enjoying the whole scene.

Later I caught two keeper BSB.....which surprised me as I was using a lure that only swims 3 feet deep. Was hoping to spot bonito or false albacore but saw none.

I had a friend and his son (15 or 16 y/o) out with my son (6 almost 7 y/o) over the weekend.

I woke my son up at 4:15am and managed to move him to where his fishing attire was located away from where his little brother was sleeping. I made him a cream cheese and jelly english muffin with a peeled clementine ready to go at his seat in the truck, which he ate and took a little nap before getting to the ramp. My other party was there ahead of me, which was great, and we launched in the dark after moving some rods around at adding lunch to the cooler.

Made a short run and started working a shoreline for bass with the doc and my son had a grey lady tackle 200 which could be a needle or a pencil depending on how it was worked. on the second drift my son's plug was knocked into the air, then followed in boat side without any luck. two more similar drifts happened with attempted strikes and no hook ups, I wish I had put a needle or loaded redfin on one of their rods if I had a second shot. I called it, and said time to tog.

So we shot over and anchored in one of my favorite places for tog, as an incoming tide has been best for me in this particular area. My son got to work immediately, he started cutting crabs and sending the legs and claws over the side. He devised a rating system for the crabs, which should be sent down first, the yellow kind, orange inside, stinky, juicy, and stinky and juicy. We managed a bunch of short fish and only added 3 to the box at 20", 18" & 16.5", & decided to have lunch early before moving. During our snack, a big flock of geese flew over head and I asked my son if he knew why one side of the "V" in the geese flocks was always longer? I told him, because there are more geese on that side. wahhhnt waaa waaaah. Anyways, we decided to get the flock out of there, and while doing so, I noticed a pile of fish on a 45'-50' breakline and decided to switch all the tog gear to vertical jigs. I asked my son to get the squid pack from the cooler, and he got to work. By the time I had the gear swapped out on 4 rods, he had the squid cut into strips and 4 drifts produced a bunch of BSB and decent scup. My son managed about 10 fish including two keeper scup and 1 keeper BSB which was the perfect pick-me-up we needed leading into my move to a spot I had picked out and never tried for the turn.

I sent the anchor down and kept it short on the rocky hump and we started all over again, chumming legs and dropping tog jigs down. After about 15-20 minutes the fish found the food trail and it was ON! we quickly went from our 3 to 9 and let a bunch others go over size, my son had one off the bottom a few turns and then it just smoked the drag and cut off on the reef below. We left them biting, but I had to call it a day.

I asked my son if he wanted to ride in the beanbag back, but he insisted on sitting next to me. That lasted for a 1/3 of the ride in before the tug on my arm, "Daddy, I think I'm going to fall asleep" he slept until about 15 mins before getting home, woke up and started laughing to himself, saying "I thought we were still fishing". I told him how proud I was of him for all the work he did on the boat, making the trip the best possible for everyone on the trip. No doubt he was the MVP.

Good detailed report there Linesider.
I made my last shore fishing trip of the season last saturday night ....plugged the inlet for a little while with no hits.....switched over to a dead eel, lit a small fire and waited ....my fishing partner pulled in a baby dogfish....he wasnt pleased at all. Little while later I had a fish on.....decent size bluefish. Cue the fat lady.

From this past weekend, it was cold at the ramp. Took a little bit for my son to get at it between a 5 am wakeup call and 30 degree air temp, the first pic is of him, half fighting the glare off the water and half being cold despite the layers of gear. 1 hot chocolate changed everything for the better and my first mate was back in the game. My surf season is showing signs that the end is near as far as big fish opportunities are concerned, but there are still some decent fish poking around here and there. I posted these pics on IG the other day but figured you guys would geta kick out of them as well. That is a JLH Skonrad with a Mustad 4/0 5x treble. From Zinger bait company. 11"

Those things are great. Not everyday you get a lure named after you. My fishing buddies are so Jelly. I was very honored when Mike reached out to me to let me know he was doing this.

Toby it never surprises me anymore how fish can mutilate plugs. Lips are thin and not much pressure is needed to distort. 5X hooks are tougher than vmc. Still when the fish leverages its power and a possible jawbone purchase, even they're no match. Still a great chance to fight the beast!!
Maybe a 5/0 5x .

Alan you are by far the hardest fishing fisherman there is and I know a lot of hard fisherman. Even at your age you would put the hardest fishing 30 year old to shame and probably have been that way for 50 years. It’s an honor to fish with you no matter what George says and even when your grumpy😊

I can attest that Sauerkraut indeed has energy stores like no man! He's always on the beach before me and usually leaves it after I do... and it often pays off!

Took advantage of the warm weather on Thanksgiving and absolutely crushed the late inning fish on the 11" Bomba Shad by Zinger Baits. So cool that this lure is so productive.

Awesome Mikey.

Nice fish Mike.
Fat lady warming up but still plenty of Blackfish around Sunday...
Water's getting chilly; 47 in the harbor, 51 out front.
No fish pics (nothing worth a photo, size-wise)...
