View Full Version : Shark
Got Stripers 05-05-2021, 09:20 AM Fun commission for a high school grad this year, her goal is to study sharks after college, mom happened by last week on a walk and liked some of my carvings. Needs to dry before I can do some sanding, grinding and will stain in oil based light gray to make it look like it belongs on a wall. Not quite sure what to be charging as I'm only into this hobby two years now, any thoughts from you guys I know would appreciate this piece. When all said and done, I'd have a full days labor, obviously the cost of the plank, gas and oil.

beamie 05-05-2021, 02:55 PM Well that plank now adays must have cost $200 alone
That really looks cool. Nice shape and action on the shark
I think if you made a few a week they would sell immediately and you’d have orders for more.
Cost? Don’t know. I think people would pay $250-$300

The problem I have at times is I carve it, Peg loves it and I can’t sell it. They are now living at her moms cottage rebuild we hope to move into within a week.

I definitely plan to trace a template from this carving before it gets delivered, so I can easily duplicate it.

can,t tell ya how many photos I have matted that sit in a box , once I quit doing the shows .
Light houses always sell .. I could sell them now if I had a outlet .
E.bay is not the place //LOL
JohnR 05-05-2021, 07:47 PM I think it looks fantastic. Right now you ware trying to make a little cash on the side so cover the materials and get a little extra, and explain it that way. Materials were $150, 10 hours at paper route money...

Still enjoy looking at the three light houses framed I won in a raffle. eBay is a pain, I sell a few on Facebook marketplace and probably more just people walking by the house and asking if I sell. I might just be even on the money invested in all the specialty grinding and sanding power tools.
afterhours 05-06-2021, 06:33 AM Great work! Love it. Got to be worth 250 I'd guess.
Got Stripers 05-07-2021, 03:14 PM Well I finished it up today, going to give her the neighbor discount at $230, but I think I can get $275 or better. Went with a nice gray oil based stain Home Depot happened to carry, which is exactly the antique barn board look I was going for. Before I deliver it I'm going to trace it on to a large piece of cardboard, so if anyone is interested, I can get another one banged out.
