Alex Shephard writes in the latest issue of The New Republic that something odd has happened to Newsweek. It has become an outlet for rightwing advocacy. The Newsweek story has been covered by many media outlets over the past several years, but I had not seen those stories and had no idea about what happened to this once iconic magazine.

For half a century, Newsweek was owned by the Washington Post and was a well-respected voice in American journalism. In 2010, the Post sold Newsweek to 91-year-old businessman Sidney Harman; Harman bought it for $1 and assumption of its liabilities. Ownership turned over a few more times, from Harman to Barry Diller. Diller regretted his purchase and sold Newsweek in 2014 to a group called International Business Times Media. IBTM changed its name to Newsweek Media Group. Its owners were tied to a small Christian college (Olivet University) led by a charismatic Korean pastor, David Jang. Jang also was founder of a cult called “The Community,” according to this report in Mother Jones.

In 2018, the offices of Newsweek were raided by federal agents investigating a money-laundering operation between the publication, the cult, and the college. A few weeks later, the Washington Post reported that the editorial staff at Newsweek had descended into “chaos” when two of its top editors and a journalist were abruptly fired: they were writing an investigative report about ties between Newsweek and its owners. Despite the firings, a group of staff journalists continued reporting on the company’s finances. Late Tuesday night, their exposé was published, revealing a deep financial relationship between the parent company and a small Christian school, Olivet University.

Alex Shephard summarizes the bizarre fate of what was once a highly respected publication.

Writing in The Columbia Journalism Review last year, Daniel Tovrov depicted Newsweek, once one of America’s most distinguished magazines, as a shell of its former self. All that was left was clickbait, op-eds from the likes of Nigel Farage and Newt Gingrich, and a general sense of drift. “Nobody I spoke to for this article had a sense of why Newsweek exists,” Tovrov wrote. “While the name Newsweek still carries a certain authority—remnants of its status as a legacy outlet—and the magazine can still bag an impressive interview now and then, it serves an opaque purpose in the media landscape.”

Last week, Newsweek suggested one possible purpose: The legitimization of narratives straight out of the right-wing fever swamps. An op-edwritten by John Eastman, a conservative lawyer and founding director of the Claremont Institute’s Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, coyly suggested that Kamala Harris, who was born in California, may not be eligible to serve as vice president because her parents were immigrants. It was, as many pointed out, a racist attack with no constitutional merit, on par with the birther conspiracy theory that claimed Barack Obama was born in Kenya. Within a few hours, Eastman’s op-ed was being brandished by President Trump, who told reporters he had “heard”Harris may not be eligible to serve.

Three days after the op-ed was published, Newsweek apologized, sort of. In an editor’s note signed by global Editor-in-Chief Nancy Cooper and opinion editor Josh Hammer, the magazine acknowledged, “We entirely failed to anticipate the ways in which the essay would be interpreted, distorted, and weaponized…. This op-ed is being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia. We apologize.” Still, the magazine refused to recognize what was obvious—that the op-ed was intended to spark questions about the eligibility of a Black woman running for high office. Newsweek’s editors merely feigned horror that the op-ed was taken in the only possible way it could have been taken.

The publication of Eastman’s op-ed says a great deal about the state of Newsweek’s opinion section, which has become a clearinghouse for right-wing nonsense. But it also points to a larger crisis in journalism itself: The rise of the zombie publication, whose former legitimacy is used to launder extreme and conspiratorial ideas.

Even by the volatile standards of journalism in the twenty-first century, Newsweek’s recent problems are extraordinary. There are the usual issues: a sharp decline in print subscribers, Google and Facebook, the difficulty of running a mass-market general interest news magazine in an age of hyperpartisanship. But Newsweek has also been raided by the Manhattan district attorney’s office (a former owner and chief executive pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges in February) and has been accused of deep ties to a shadowy Christian cult, amid many other scandals.

This is one of the strangest media stories I have read. The New Republic calls Newsweek “a zombie magazine.” Sad.

I then looked it up and in that time you changed it to "smoking kits" but when I asked again you said you didn't know. So you felt the need to answer but didn't know (even though you changed your story after you saw that I was calling you out for switching from crack pipes to smoking kits.

But you support someone who mocks the handicapped and try making excuses by saying he was mocking their "appearance" or he has done it other times to non handicapped so somehow that meant he wasn't mocking a handicapped person. Pete recently pulled up the post that you say was about TDF kids and it was in a response to TDF's posting a picture of liberal kids. Pete went back with the basically the same thing as TDF did. So it's not nearly how you try to imply it is.

It's not okay when Liberals do something. I just think you're such a scummy person that I take special interest in your posts as I've never met someone as angry as you who constantly insults anybody who they disagree with. That was fun, thanks.

Go look at the posts that were started in the time frame you were on your 6 month time out and look at the tone versus when you're around. you'll see the difference in tone and amount of insults and realize that the only common denominator during that time is you. That's very telling.

Those companies also got creamed when gas prices plummeted in 2020. If they had the ability to set price unilaterally, they'd have never let gas prices get that low.

The president has some impact om gas prices, but there are other more powerful forces. Gas prices didn't plummet in 2020 because of Trump, they plummeted because covid destroyed global demand.

Biden isn't responsible for all of the price increases, prices would have gone up regardless because global demand is rebounding. But Biden is seen as less friendly to the gas industry than Trump, which fuels speculation that supply will decrease.

Like it or not, the president often gets blamed for what happens on his watch/ George Bush had very little, if anything, to do with the subprime mortgage crisis, but it happened on his watch, and the left sure didn't complain about the unfairness of it.

Similarly, Biden will own this.

On the flipside, the virus is dissipating, and that would have happened regardless of who won in 2020 (we were vaccinating almost a million people a day before Biden took office), and Biden will get credit for that.

I'm just surprised his polling is this low, this consistently. I'm not complaining, but I'm surprised.

actually IBD predicted a Trump win and I believe one or two others....but the leftist media polls outlets openly supported Hillary and produced polls that were often used to support her campaign and depress trump support, and then there were the smug leftists that mocked and scoffed at the idea of a trump win....

so now those same leftist media outlets that openly supported hillary and now biden are showing disastrous polling for biden

Iam not surprised the avg American is impatient has no historical memory has no concept of the world around them and how things actually works . They expect instant results

Their entire view is driven by 3 things they interact with on a daily bases Gas prices ,food Prices and what’s on their Phones

Seeing what happening in the US thinking it’s only happening in the US

Don’t try to tell them prices are up on cars gas food durable goods because supply is out stripping demand , What until interest rates hit 10% many Americans have never experienced ! just like this inflation..

They don’t understand they get angry and with in a year they vote in the last Party they just got rid of and start the cycle all over again .

Republicans' ratings of Biden have always been low; currently, 7% approve of him. Biden averaged 10% approval among Republicans through July 2021 but has averaged 6% since then.

Well, if they're better off, there must be a reason for it. And Trump was President. And we always give credit or blame to the President for our condition. Sooo . . .

And if, on the question of deserving to be re-elected, a small minority of those who said they were better off didn't like the way or demeanor used to achieve the "better #^&#^&#^&#^& joined the 44% who didn't think they were "better off," then you could get a majority to say he didn't deserve to be re-elected, even though they were "better off."

So your "But feel free to think that poll gives credit to Trumps policy’s because it didn’t" (which is sort of a contradictory construction--feel free to give credit for something BECAUSE it is wrong) is more presumptuous than definitive.

Biden lost significant ground among self-identified Democrats, independents and moderates. The president’s approval rating dropped 20 percentage points, from 78% to 58%, among Democrats, and by 12 points among moderates (dropping from 50% to 38%), according to the poll. Support among independents declined by 13 points, from 38% to 25%

“Voters aren’t wild about the president’s performance, and that has consequences,” Yost added.

After the initial regrowth to some previous normal, the measure of success will be told if new tax policies maintain growth, or suppress or reverse it.

Don't know what that has to do with what I said. And it's too sketchy to mean much. It doesn't consider a whole host of conditions, world conditions at the time, wars, market collapses and timing of recoveries, types of jobs (government or private), sectors of the economy, small business growth, etc., etc.

My response was to wdmso's noting the current "hot labor market" under Biden. I noted that it was also under Trump until the pandemic.

Which was a kind of apples to oranges thing. When Trump took office, the economy had already recovered from a disaster, but much more slowly than it had traditionally recovered from previous meltdowns. Large and rapid growth is expected in a recovery from disaster. But it was growing far more slowly than it normally should have before the Trump administration came to power. So the growth was substantial considering Trump's starting point in an already growing economy.

The economic recovery happening now is shortly after its destruction, so it would be expected to have a larger percentage growth until it reaches a more normal status, from which the percentage of growth would decrease because a given percent (say 6%) growth from a smaller number of jobs, (during the beginning stages of recovery) would be difficult to sustain, would probably be an over-heating, in the latter stages of recovery in which many of the jobs, etc. had already grown in number--e.g.:6% of 10 is a much smaller number than 6% of 100, and 2 or 3% of 100 is a great deal larger than 6% of 10. It would not be possible to constantly sustain a 6% growth rate. The rate of growth would substantially decrease as the recovery progressed.

So the growth rate under Trump's recovery, considering its later position, was substantial. And the growth under Biden is to be expected considering its starting point. The Trump administration predicted that there would be a V shaped, "hot" recovery.

Which is not to retract from any good news now. Just to say, as wdmso would probably say if it were a Trump recovery at this time, that it's to be expected.

People move to Floriduh because they’re old, want warmth, lower taxes and don’t care about schools or infrastructure because their grandchildren and businesses are where they came from.

Numbers don't make it an insurrection. Intent makes it an insurrection.

Almost everyone on January 6, was doing the same exact thing (albeit less destructively) that the liberals had been doing all summer, and no one cared.

It wasn't nothing. It was a riot by people who couldn't accept they didn't get what they wanted. It's what the left does constantly, which makes it strange that you don't recognize it.
