View Full Version : Where did Winter go?
Wow. Are we even going to have one this year? It's getting to mid February and we have open water near my house in Sudbury. That hasn't happened since I moved here in the late 80s. If this is what global warming looks like, we are clearly in big trouble. I'm not a big ice fisherman, but this sure isn't good for people who are.
But on a personal note, what's sad about this is part of the reason I moved here back then was because I grew up in North Carolina and hated the 95 degree heat and muggy heat in the summers. But I also hatred the winters too, with four months of 40 degree rain and 30 degree cold when it was clear. Always cold enough to keep you inside, but almost never cold enough to snow; maybe a measly 3 inch snow once a year. When I first moved up here, we had plenty of snow, and my Dad and I X country skied all the way through the winter. I loved it, and loved the 80 to 85 degrees summers with great fishing too. But now, I feel like the dreary rain and boring cold I hated growing up have now moved north to follow me, along with some of the muggy heat too. Sigh. Guess I'll have to move up to Labrador in a few years to get some snow!
PaulS 02-10-2023, 11:17 AM Very weird winter. I only go ice fishing like 2-3 times per year but look forward to it. That is not going to happen this year.
Thinking of going for a bike ride at lunch time today although it is very windy out.
JohnR 02-10-2023, 11:28 AM Weird winter but we've had these before. Don't worry - 140" of snow next year. La Nina/El Nino
Move closer to the coast, you can have nicer winters and cooler summers ; )
zimmy 02-10-2023, 12:10 PM The La Nina typically gives New England piles of snow. Maybe in March. Current trend though are making ice fishing and pond hockey a thing of the past in southern CT.
Got Stripers 02-10-2023, 02:37 PM I worry about future generations, but I’ve played golf almost every week this winter and I have yet to even put gas in the snow blower to make sure it was at least ready.
Guppy 02-10-2023, 04:39 PM I don’t know, but don’t miss it,,, except for the ice fishin….:-(
Mike P 02-10-2023, 04:56 PM This is my 7th winter in Finland. 5 of the 7 have been unusually mild. This January was the warmest on record, in many areas.
FWIW, climate scientists have said that the polar regions will be the first to feel the effects of climate change.

Fixed it for you, the global sea ice right now is bad at both poles.
I would argue sea level rise on low lying atolls and coastal river deltas are more tangible than Finnish winters but you will be seeing more warming there than more southern latitudes.

Are you considered in the arctic circle?

tattoobob 02-10-2023, 07:03 PM Well it's New England so anything can happen weather wise, I don't mind when it snows on the weekends but during the week it's a pain in the butt. I don't mind the warm winter makes working outside a lot easier

Sub-arctic climate zone. Ironically, the melting polar ice cap, and melting sea ice in the Barents Sea is supposedly going to produce more snowfall in coming years, with more moisture in the air. For its latitude, Finland doesn't get a lot of snow at present. Helsinki averages 30cm--about a foot--annually. Where I am, we usually get about 50.
piemma 02-12-2023, 10:24 AM My snow blower is tuned and ready to go. Haven't started it since I tuned it. I still have 4 cords of dry oak. 2 split and stacked and 2 in 4 footer.
And finally Jeanne and I played golf Friday in 64 degree temps. Great Winter as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah, but I miss my X country skiing. Used to look forward to it every winter; beautiful and quiet. Loved every minute of it. Would go down to the Wayside Inn, get a scotch and sit by the fire when I was done. Now, I’m back in NC again with nothing to do all winter but watch sports on TV (and the Pats aren’t even in the playoffs!). By me, it’s been a wasted winter.
Got Stripers 02-12-2023, 04:21 PM Golf again today, loving this winter, best round of the past six years. Four birdies on the back helped me get a 74 on the card.

There have been some recent winters here, in what was once of the X/C skiing capitals of the world, where there hasn't been enough snowfall for it unless you're fortunate enough to be near a lake that froze solid. You only need a thin coating of snow for i, there.
Guppy 02-12-2023, 05:05 PM Raked hogs today…. Absolutely beautiful… stuffies on the horizon… :-)
wdmso 02-12-2023, 07:17 PM This weathers has been helpful
I’ve replaced my interior leds on the boat fixed my speakers, and changed all my lug nuts on my trailer
Update my chart plotter

redlite 02-12-2023, 08:30 PM Prayers answered on my end
Truck died just before Xmas and I was full on stressed out panic mode as I have 18 driveways that I am responsible for besides mine. And anything available or reasonably affordable is garbage worse than my truck. Haven't even brought the snow shovels out of the loft or fired off the snowblower as still being crippled it's not like I could use em anyway.
Thankful no pond hockey to have been missing out on either.
Kids have been begging for the industrial grade snow tubes for years cause the the regular ones last about 3 trips down Potato hill. Santa dropped Serious coin on them this year and they are still in the boxes.
And of course all work so far has been interior this winter
Not everything is bad about global warming .

Pete F. 02-12-2023, 11:00 PM We’re supposed to start tapping tomorrow for sugar season, it feels more like the end of March than early February.
It looks like all above freezing except Friday, it’ll kill sugaring and we’ll be golfing by mid March.

Mike can you imagine how tired our arms would be if we had weather like this back in a certain winter holdover spot, OMG it would have been insane.

Not the Thames, although when the numbers were there, that spot to would have rocked, but the other spot cut my travel in half. Word is they are making an effort to keep people out of there.

Headed to Greg’s this morning, getting a load of hardwood and scoping out a large pine that almost came down. He saw a kayaker up inside this winter but I don’t think he has heard anything about anything being caught.
Forecast is for 57 today, 62 tomorrow, 60 the day after. Well folks,
I think that about does it for this winter. Not likely any X country
skiing this year!
I call this “fools spring”. March will come in like a lion I think.

Yippee! We finally got 3 days of winter! Got to X country ski through 4 inches of snow (with a number of bare spots), used my snow blower for 10 minutes, and even got to have two scotches in the snow at the Wayside Inn. Wow! What a treat!
Can't wait for next winter-if we ever have one again.:hee:
