So i got out with Reel Cast charters in old saybrook on father’s day. Mike had told me that getting bunker was the key to great fishing. So we started the day by poking around a cove. There were several other boats in he same cove, throwing cast nets, casting snaggers. I didn’t see one bunker landed by any other boats. But Mike is so in tune with his side scan sonar, that even though there was no surface flipping,,he filled his two live wells with two tosses of his cast net. The bunker literally cannot hide from him.

Then we live lined them for a few hours, and we didn’t go ten consecutive minutes without a fish on, all day. We were surrounded by boats that didn’t have bunker, and i saw two fish caught all day, by all the other boats combined, while we caught fish after fish to 40 pounds.

Mikes boat is a 1 year old conch 27 footer. his equipment is all state of the art, very light tackle with plenty of strength. he and his captains not only catch fish, they’re pleasant to be with and a perfect for kids.

It’s truly a world class outfit, it’s a lot like fishing with Cohen Babcock.

No I have not. I have a friend who lives along the shore who fishes the same area as Mike so we see him out occasionally. My friend doesn't like livelining like Mike does. We see him netting bunker a lot.

When the bass are on bunker nothing else interest them. Match the hatch . Isn’t just a saying

i probably wouldn’t want to liveline bunker all day, every day. But it is pretty fun.

i only saw two fish caught by guys who didn’t have bunker. Both times, the captain wanted to replace my half-dead bunker with a fresh lively one, he removed my half dead bunker from the hook, threw it out into the water where it was immediately smashed by a bass. then this one guy near us would throw a surface plug right where my bunker just got eaten.

That happened twice throughout the day, and nobody else caught a single fish. if i were in any of those other boats, i’d have happily paid a fortune for our bunker. I saw guys casting docs, drifting soft plastics, drifting eels, didn’t get a whiff.

Yep some people are die hards and stick to what they know. No matter what they see .. that’s not me …. I try any tactic that helps my chances..

Last year it was a casting egg and a fly for Albies . It saved me from a skunk a few times ..
