Hey Pete NO THREAD IS AMMUINED TO HIJACKING lol

likwid 10-23-2004 12:17 AM

last i looked a v6 block was about $4000 ready to go from Mercury.

a new outboard was $15,000

huh

which is more expensive again?

also I/O's are better on fuel

all in all inboard is the way to go hands down.

Maybe I'll be driving a boat new to me :) a 20' Chris Craft. I test drive it tomorrow anyone have any knowledge on the 3.0 mercury I/0?? [/B]
To me the Question should be if a 3.0 I/O has the power for a 20 foot boat....

I ran a 3.0 merc. I/O in a 20 foot boat for 7 years.
The boat was a walkaround 2500 pounds.
It was great for trolling if thats your thing.

I thought it was underpowerd:smash:

AN I/O has more upkeep and more parts to fail.

RI Popper 10-23-2004 07:55 AM

Some good information both ways on it. As far as underpowered It is lighter than yours was. I think it's about 2,000. And It does around 35 mph. good enough for me. I'm not a sweetwater bass man lol.

likwid 10-23-2004 08:53 AM

I'm surprised the number of people who are still so obsessed with going fast especially with the price of gas still going up. (But in reality not that many people are going anywhere, nevermind going fast. This past summer powerboats barely moved from Fairhaven Shipyard.)

Out to the Canyons in a 35 foot Blackwatch we only did 22 knots.
Out to Cuttyhunk in a 25 foot Mako we only did 20 knots usually.

But hey, usually this is on boats that are fished 3-4 times a week. :D

And honestly, having spent my life on boats and around boat yards and having known plenty of people with both I/Os, outboards and inboards, the I/Os and inboards had less problems hands down.

Lets not mention the ficht debacle. :laughs:

And I/O engine parts are typically cheaper. You buy the parts at NAPA, not the boat yard. (Unless you like being ripped off.)

And please for those of you with outboards, stop buying your marked up "special" sparkplugs at the boatyard, they're not special. No matter how many times the dealer sprinkles charm powder on your head. Throw a set of Bosch Platinums in em and be done.

You want reliability? 30 foot lobster boat hull with an inboard cummins turbo diesel, dry stack, and keel coolers.

And you can fish year round in comfort.

Vectorfisher 10-23-2004 10:12 AM

All I can say is I have had both and F*** the I/O. I/O was the same year as the TROUBLED FICHT and I put half the hours on the I/O and spent triple what I have spent on the outboard, also had to be towed in on 2 seperate occasions and never went offshore luckily the TROUBLED FICHT has always gotten me home and as far as gas my new boat is at least a thousand pounds more with 40 more hp than the I/O performance is so much better and very little difference in fuel usage, however I do add oil now. And I now have a much longer season with the outboard now that I do not have to worry about freeze ups.

By the way price the total package with outdrive and all plus installation and report back on which is cheaper! I too can buy a new powerhead for $ 4000.00 And how about that huge engine box that takes up the back of the boat? Oh dont get me going there is a huge list ;)

macojoe 10-23-2004 12:13 PM

Well I have also had both!! I/O is nice quite, cheap gas, easy to work on, and cheaper parts.

But in my opion Outboard is the way to go!! Tghe problem is with I/O is that there is always something to be done!!! It never stops!!
You are going to play with the I/O every year!!!! even if it is litle stuff.
My O/B which may be more on gas, more $$ for parts, and it is quiter the the I/O was!! Never has probklems!!so far. But when you look at it you will see for the most part the OB is going to run Much much longer with out a single problem and that imo is what I want care free boating.

Fish On 10-23-2004 01:52 PM

RI Popper 10-27-2004 10:49 AM

Some times you can pick up a few cod inside the wind tower in some of the deeper spots inside the harbor. But it's still too early for much of that. But I'm ussumin they're around outside the light. ;)
