that sounds right. its amazing how much of our nutritional "science" is based on pretty loose assumptions that were never challenged. cholesterol, saturated fat, carbs, etc. If you stick to whole foods 90-95% of the time, you should be good.

we as americans just eat too much, so cutting back on total volume of food consumed is important. its tough to do though, because overeating is so engrained in our society. how often are bagels brought into the office (over 1000 calories with cream cheese - thats about 1/2 of what the average guy should be eating in a day, with very little nutritional value), or its someone's birthday and there's cake and you feel like a jerk turning it down, or everyone is ordering subs or pizza and you feel weird getting a salad, etc.

Gave up trying to do it my way and joined weight watchers. Lost 3 pounds this week.

Katie 04-10-2008 06:47 AM

Been sick past week. Might of gained a lb or 2 from all the gatorade.

The Dad Fisherman 04-10-2008 07:40 AM

I always wanted to write a weight loss book....it would have 2 pages.

Page 1 "Eat Less"
Page 2 "Excercise"

The End

Weight Watchers is actually a good program because it isn't some weird fad diet. It teaches you Portioning. We always biggie size everything, they teach you exactly what size a portion of food should be.

Quite a few years ago I did it with my wife and lost 50 lbs, that was when I was tipping the scales at a whopping 302......unfortunately I went back to biggie sizing everything again and put some of it back on.....but so far I've lost over 30 this time around and hopefully it will stay off. Only time will tell

Duke41 04-10-2008 09:36 AM

Good for you man.I'm afraid there isn't much more for me to lose at this point.I'll still lose a couple before the end but 10lbs more I just couldn't see.I'd hafta burn off some muscles to reach that point.I'll still be pushing so I wouldn't give up yet.I'll settle for third with Scone and Yourself on the top.

Katie 04-11-2008 08:19 PM

can proudly say i made my goal, and fit into my prom dress.. its all good :kewl:

JohnR 04-11-2008 08:23 PM

while it would be cool to win or finish second, my dedication to the weight loss side of this has kind of taken a back seat to just plain ol getting in shape. i'm still eating right, but since the weather has gotten better i've gotten into jogging more. i have never enjoyed lifting weights all that much. now that i'm down under 220 my old knees don't rebel at the road work. i'm lovin it. 4 miles is a relative snap in a slow, but comfortable, 40 minutes. so i've changed my routine from weights and cardio to interval training on my off days and jogging three or four days a week.
so my new goal, which should still melt off my remaing flab (though at a slower pace) is 5 miles in 40 minutes just like when i was a "young" man of 45.
don't know how the contest thing will work out but it's been great. many thanks to everyone for the kick start and a return to a healthier life style.
ps.after coming up with a sore shoulder from chasing schoolies around, i've also added fishing hardening exersizes, repetitions stepping up to a two foot high step, lots of stretching, and slinging a
5' length of 1 1/2" galvy pipe.
Great job everyone!

i made my goal. first time at this weight since well. a long time ago :p
probably will lose more during the summer, but i'm all set for now ;)

johnny ducketts 04-16-2008 06:23 AM

Just came back from 2 weeks at sea, and combined with working 12 on 12 off, I'm down to 204. So that's a total of 14 lbs for this contest and 46 since last april when I realized I needed to do something. This is the lightest I have been since my junior year in college.

The Dad Fisherman 04-16-2008 07:29 AM

Wow, forgot all about the weigh-in yesterday.

234 this morning....32 gone since the start.

Final 2 weeks coming up........we must have lost a combined angler between us. Nicely done.

Still need some entry fees so if you can get them in the mail ASAP that would be great. I'm sure the "Anglers Formerly Known As Portly" want to get them wet as soon as the fish arrive.

fishsmith 04-16-2008 07:45 AM

geeze the 15th came early, I at 160lbs.

tattoobob 04-27-2008 05:56 PM

this thread is dying, hows everyone doing?

I am down around 20 depending on when I weigh myself, but I am being told I look better

bart 04-27-2008 06:14 PM

there is a misconception about eating less that i see in this thread. you need to eat more often, but smaller portions. eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day and your metabolism will speed up. no dairy, it retains too much water. cut back on carbs, in fact none after 6. if you do eat pasta, eat whole wheat. rice and steamed vegetables are your friends. a nice salad with italian tuna and hot peppers is my favorite. sticking to a diet is not an easy task, but if you want to lose weight you need to do it, along with hitting the gym. cardio and diet are the two main ingredients to losing weight, but make sure you get enough protein so that you're not burning lean muscle instead of fat...

anyways, i started in Dec. I'm down to 220 from close to 270. still need to firm up a bit but otherwise, i'm feeling pretty good. :)

bart 04-27-2008 06:16 PM

nice job TDF :kewl:

Squid kids Dad 04-27-2008 06:42 PM

Bart

Excellent job..I envy you

johnny ducketts 04-28-2008 01:03 PM

I think I'm going to end up weighing in as my last post. 204 for the contest, for a total of 14 lbs, but more importantly 46 lbs off since last April.. To the winner, Congrats and catch a large on your hard earned pluggage Great Work!

Some motivation for the portly anglers

Some motivation for the portly anglers

In the running.........as of 4/15

Johnny Ducketts - 218 --> 204
Down 14 lbs
Down 6.4%

Zacs - 271 --> 223
Down 48 lbs
Down 17.7%

The Dad Fisherman - 266 --> 234
Down 32lbs
Down 12.0%

Scone - 267 --> 219
Down 48 lbs
Down 18.0%

Adam 777 - 229.5 --> 189

Down 17.6%

<cue final countdown music>
It is a close race, with only a couple more days to go..... I am still shedding pounds, but had a little bump entertaining some customers for a few days... but I am back on track and should finish strong.

This has been great motivation for me, and I am so excited we all did this. Maybe we can all get together in May for a (not so) portly anglers fishing trip.
