I HATE it on spinners. Wind knots. I HATE it on casting conventionals. To soft, digs into itself, sticky coming off the spool. It's OKAY on conventional bottom fishing rigs. -WW |
Got word from Mike Batta pure fishing rep for the north east .That Pure fishing is still going to keep the Fire Line IN addition to the New Fire Line XDS. again they are not droping Fire Line Regular Just adding another version called Fire Line XDS.
My Goof:smash: |
It's gotten better, Ben. I used to call it Power Blows but the new spools seem to have better QC.
On spinners you need a reel that winds it level, with an oversized roller. Don't use anything less than 65# test on conventionals. |
Phew. So they suck just a little bit less. They still suck though.

I remember when the first bulk spools came out - I bought them at bigfishtackle.com and every single one was defective. They had "mashdown" nubs where the line was flattened out during the extrusion process every few hundred yards. I use the 30 lb. for light tackle and 65 for bottom fishing. -WW |
NoProblemsHere
I've used 65, 30, and 20 for years without many problems at all. I switched to 30 stealth for awhile and was not impressed.
I have noticed that the PowerPro seems to handle much better when i get it spooled on at a shop (thanks mike!) the stuff has to be even and has to have even tension. I'll try FireLine soon though...people seem to love it. |
With Power Pro, one of the things I do is dunk the spool in a bucket of water. Then wind it on REAL TIGHT, ideally with a friend putting tension on the spool (using a pencil in the spool hole) in the bucket of water.
Wet packing assists in getting it on tight. You don't have to deal with this process if you're using Fireline. -WW |
Good advice WW. I have been HATING the PP and went back to Stren.
Am going to give the Fireline a go (IF it is available in the type you guys think is best). Any tips on spooling the Fire ? I run a Penn Slammer 360,460 & 560. Any help is appreciated. |
Big Power Pro fan here. Ive never had the problems I hear about so often and have been using it on everything for a couple years now.
I like fireline too. I hated whiplash, its suppleness caused me alot of problems |
Krispy,
Hello. How are you this AM ? What kind of reels are you running the PP on ? Could it be my problems come from casting into breeze to firmly ? Those was the times I had wind knot problems. Also, I can see what WW was saying about spool tension and properly spooling it. It seemed to loose when I had it. I need to get a grip on these lines..... ;) |
BW, I have 50lb PP on a Nautil 7500, Tica Tauraus  and VS 200. I only do a quick pull, no drag, after each cast to make sure there isnt a loop around the knob. Its second nature now. I also manually close my bails. I am often in situations casting into a stiff wind and havent had significant problems.
I had heard of the beakoff problems but not experienced it |
Excellent Krisp,
Thanks. That good definetly have been my problem. I would just cast away and not even pay attention. First time I used it was at night (duh) and by third cast I was hosed. Cheers mate  |
power pro
the wind knots are horrible, but i'm not ready to blame those on power pro...i only experienced it once in a HEAVY breeze in my face..and i haven't had it happen again..
others I know love and swear by whiplash 65#----they laugh at my powerpro and apparently the whiplash cannot be broken |
65# Whiplash is the best braid I've ever used.
