Is that carbide or steel there is a big difference.I use the same round router bit i used on my jig mold an it still cuts fine i clean it up wit a stone ball.
nib those are HSS steel, no problems with them loosing sharpness, I've cupped over 4000 poppers with ONE and not had a problem....I suspect they would work for what casual builders would do :D I bought a spare just in case but it sits there. It will probably crap out late on a Saturday in the middle of a run though knowing my luck.
I'd be interested in a 3/4 and possibly a 1 inch
Mike still cheaper, especially if we can put a group buy together. That's retail price.
Let's do it.
NIB see what I see...there's your flat bottom round counter sink for eye's.

Scott: count me in ........... 3/4" & 1"
Can a Jersey boy get in on this?? I'm in for a 1" and a 1 1/4".

What am I doing wrong???
I found one of these bits and tried it today. The only thing I succeeded at doing is burning the wood and making a TON of smoke!!
Am I spinning it too fast? My drill press is running around 3700 rpm (I believe) Any suggestions?! :wall: :wall: |
Slow it down some Bob? I run mine about 2750 if I remember right?
If it still smokes it's dull and no good...was it wrapped up or was it loose? After the shows I'm going to get the stuff together for the group buy. |
It was in a hard plastic case and not touching anything. I'm wondering if I'm running at a higher rpm. Maybe I'll try it again today slower?!
hopefully you didn't burn the edge off it Bob. Bring it with you this weekend.
Gawd I hope not! :( I'll bring it down. It was a cheapy so live and learn.
Larry, having built one or two poppers in my day. May I suggest pre-drilling with a conventional hi=speed drill bit 1/16 siz smaller and then plunging your ball of death in. It will save tons of work and time. Or what I use is a multi fluted countersink which I have machined round.

Salty,
I think you were right with slowing the bit down. Slowed down to 770rpm and it seems to work fine, although I think I dulled the bit :( Probably order from you when you put the order in. I really like the cut of it! Thanks for the info! See you this weekend! |
with a cut-off blade on a dremmel tool you might be able to the the edge back on it yourself. I sharpen all my own bits. I've been doing it for years. They just usually need a nice light touch. on the inside of the leading edge.

I just ordered from Discount Tool. Jeff said he would give us a quantity break!!
Can i get in on this? 1" please :-}

Ya, grind the corners to a radius but you also grind the center point a little smaller as well.Keep an edge on the radius.
