what would you throw on the back of a mako 19??

Yamaha 90 imo.

Little more reliable than the hondas in my experience if maintained.

I just picked up a DF70 Suzuki pushing an 18' bay boat. Absolutly love the motor...Keep thinking it stalls at idle. Filled up two weeks ago (3 trips a week) and the gas needle barely has moved.

The dealership stocks Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda motors so I asked what was the prefered motor you are putting on boats. His response was, "the mechanics love the suzuki's because they are never in the shop for major repairs." I think they push a little less torque than yammi or honda but they are also the best price out of the three. That being said a 90-115 (same block) would suit you just fine AND you can't beat their warranty...(5 years) or three year with some sort of rebate. :bl:

Thats just my experience though... in no way have I earned a respected opinion yet :)

RIJIMMY 06-23-2006 02:04 PM

holy crap Nebe! This actually means you can fish in the daylight! I'll be doing the same thing in a year or two! Congrats and good luck with it!

rhodyflyguy 06-23-2006 02:07 PM

115 suzuki 4-stroke, yup.

zacs 06-23-2006 03:56 PM

i had the exact same year/boat up until this winter when I sold her and bought new.

i would reccomend suzuki 140 for a 4 stroke, or if you like spending some serious $$$ a would consider a 2 strok, get the etec 150.

i have a friend with a '69 19' with a yam 90 4 stroke and it could use more power. it is not a light boat...

I know a lot about your boat. would be happy to help whenever you need it, shoot me a PM.

Clammer 06-23-2006 04:09 PM

WTF have I been //

good luck with the rig //but its ganna be a bitch dragging all over them/there rocks you/all crawl on :hidin:

good point. 4 strokes are known for producing less hp then they say they do. look at the 225 yammie, it only produces 205 HP. also they have less torque then comparable 2 strokes

Your Famous

Nice article in the ProJo. Good luck, should be upgrading that mako soon.

Nebe 06-25-2006 09:44 AM

Thanks :D

I think i am going to keep this boat for a while...

hey ZacS, how many GPH were you getting with your boat?? 3? 4?

zacs 06-25-2006 12:55 PM

6-7gph running 25 kts on a 2000 150 evinrude ficht.

RIROCKHOUND 06-25-2006 01:02 PM

4 stroke go with the 'zuki.. everyone I know with one loves them
the r/v has a 200hp Merc that goes pretty good, 9-10gph, 25ft at 24kts...

Nebe 06-25-2006 06:28 PM

OK i have 2 questions...
1- how much does a 115 suzuki go for these days????
2- how much fuel would i save with a 4-stroke vs. a 2 stroke???

zacs 06-25-2006 11:08 PM

like i said, i would reccomend the 140HP zuke, but you would do ok with the 115. From what I hear, you would save 50% in fuel if you went 4 stroke with the zuke or 2 stroke with the etec.

the 115hp costs around 7K. 140 around 8K. etecs are considerbably more, i think over 10k for the 150hp.

figure another grand to install it. you could do it yourself, i have done it twice, but it is a pain in the ass, and i paid for the service the last time....

taJon 06-26-2006 06:24 AM

the new hpdi 2 strokes are more fuel efficient than a 4 stroke. it is a trade off now. the biggest difference is maintanence intervals and how oil is added.

Nebe 06-26-2006 08:10 AM

Interesting..

I am quickly learning that boats = $$$$

a new engine will have to wait till next year or maybe the year after...

All i know is I cant wait to put her in the water

RIROCKHOUND 06-26-2006 08:15 AM

Call and order seatow or safesea now... good peace of mind at 120 bucks....
then we shall go catch fluke and basses till our arms fall off....

Sluggoslinger 06-26-2006 08:33 AM

Mako's are great boats. I have a 215 with a honda 150 on it. It is slow as balls but its also a tank. This boat really takes the rough stuff well.

Congrats! Classicmako.com is a great referance site for ya.

IMO go with more power. You'll get a longer life out of the motor if you aren't working it so hard during its life. I just learned the hard way and I'd do anything to change my 150 for a 225 (except pay for it)

MrHunters 06-26-2006 08:36 AM

new 2 strokes are as efficient as 4 strokes but are pretty expensive.... Most 2 strokes need dealer maintence after 300 hrs where 4 strokes are usually 100-200... My dealer said the alarm will go off at 100 hrs. but just to bring it in real quick and at 200 hours we will do the maintence. DF 60-70 price out at 5-7K with controls and install so im guessing the 90-115 tier are somewhere 8-10 ish.(suzuki im talking)

Springtides 06-26-2006 11:03 AM

suzuki

guarentee is super. Good luck with the new ride.

JohnR 06-26-2006 11:24 AM

Best three sites for you to go to for information are ClassicMako.com and ClassicSeacraft.com and Continuouswave (Whalers). Just about all the info on doing old boats you could possibly need...

taJon 06-26-2006 11:32 AM

You should look at leftovers or hpdi used engines. Alot of people still want the 4 strokes, so there are some out there.

taJon 06-26-2006 11:37 AM

The two strokes do have advantages over the 4's.

1. longer maintenance intervals
2. more torque :D
3. better fuel efficiency in lots of cases
4. they weigh less, usually 1/3 less on larger motors

The Pringles Blitz we used to call it. I might like Popcorn Blitz even better though. :D

big jay 06-26-2006 05:34 PM

popcorn sounds good - I was reading another site where a couple of "rockstars" were giving lessons on finding birds with radar and running them down - just the type of crap I love (esp come tuna time). Somebody else came up with a great recipe to counteract this involving oatmeal, a cup of bunker oil, and not so cryptic messages over the vhf. Bet their sweet arses I'm breaking that out this season.

-sorry to add to the highjack -- great boat eben, we had a 19' mako about the same vintage when I was a little kid - wish I had it myself now.

about 12 years ago me and my dad dumped a 10 lb bag of popcorn right at the hairpin turn at brenton point.......... If i only had a camera. A dude in a moped came burning around the corner and hit 3 gulls at once. we were lucky no one got hurt, but man oh man what a trip :D

Boat update- hull has been compounded to a mirror shine, teak has been cleaned.. engine wont start and i am ready to sell it :hihi:
