here are my first six attempts...
it does get easier as you move along.

what do you guys do to keep the needle straight while going down the slug-go.?? i kinda bob and weave until i hit the tip.

anything i should be doing differnt?

libassboy 07-15-2006 02:39 PM

Hunters, you wanna try and keep the sluggo as strait as possible..the more you do the easier it will become.
I use a long piece of thru wire with a loop and a sharpened end. You just gotta feel ure way thru, if it starts to go off to the side, back the needle up and try again.

my next 6 went alot better. I didn't add the zap a gap until i buried the shaft of the top hook into the slugo.

I am using a wire hanger with a filed point on one end.. seems to work ok.

Lay the Flat side on the table, Look down as if a birds eye view and just slide it straight.....and its not a race, take your time and it will go straight

I use the top of old CB antennas for needles. They are useally made of stainless steel and are a lot stiffer than old coat hangers!! Beat one end flat and drill a pin hole in it, the other end sharpen to a looooong point, the longer the better. I even polished the point and flat end with a buffing wheel. Makes it slide thru very very easy!!!!

MrHunters 07-16-2006 07:30 AM

thanks guys, next batch will be be smooth sailing :)

do you think that the smell of zap a gap might deter the fish?

uffah 3:16?? you coming or going? :)

MartinD18 07-16-2006 08:08 AM

...or just buy Hogys with the 2 hook system and rig them in all of 30 seconds. With your eyes closed after the first couple of times.

I have to second that one. Be sure to hit the back hook with a touch of glue to keep it in place.

Or even better fish any of these plastics off a Pt. Jude Wobble Head. I like the 1.5 oz. and the 14" Hogy. Fish hit it violently, just like they often do with a real eel. That combo worked very well for me last night, till the bluefish moved in.

Do you guys weight the Hogy? I agree, the hook system is great, but the belly cut-outs make it hard to weight near the front hook like the Sluggo. I'll be swimming them tonight for the first time. Thanks in advance - Chris

Try split shots or rubber core sinkers on the mono connecting the hooks.

Perfect. I'm prepping right now for tonight - Thanks Pete - See you at the shop soon.

Don't use the hook in package. A good one hook alternative is the Mustard limerick in 8/0 no. 31022. This is tube lure hook and needs to be straightened out before placed in the 9 inch Slug-go. Also , close the eye and wrap the shank with thread or 50 lb. dacron then super glue and push into sluggo. The guy who originally introduced me to the sluggo 4 seasons ago uses this hook/method and is happy with it. It is a ALOT easier and quicker to rig and effective but I have found you will miss some fish , epecially dinks, because of the one hook. He doesn't care as he is looking for cows. His best is 47 on this rig.

When fish hit, they tend to rip the glued, stringed hook out of the plastic. I don't think you can re-glue, on the spot, due to the saltwater intrusion and prefer to replace it with another from the bag. What is your experience?
