758lbs, on a 8lb blue fish

ProfessorM 09-24-2006 05:36 PM

18 pounds. I saw a 23 pounder caught at the canal had to be 18 years ago. A friend of mine took a 25 lber on a charter out of Plymouth 25 years ago. He wasn't even a fisherman, thought it was no big deal. P.

Backbeach Jake 09-24-2006 05:42 PM

14lbs. 7oz. won the pool on a party boat. Diamond jig, 8oz. Googan with a 7 pounder insisted his was bigger.:whackin: Google images "World record Bluefish" and get a load of the 31 pounder. I'd do it for you, but my right clicker is on the fritz.

tattoobob 09-24-2006 05:46 PM

I got a 9 pounder on my fly rod this July in Truro the bay side. I was into the backing in a second. first time for that

JHABS 09-24-2006 05:48 PM

Took em to 20 lbs. at the Hill about 12 years ago, A few here were in on that....................

striprman 09-24-2006 05:51 PM

I had a couple 20 pounders from the boat in the Weweantic under pogie schools, 1976. My biggest canal blue was 18 pounds.

18.50#'s, 3 weeks ago in the West Passage. The freaking fish would not let go of the BogaGrip. It just kept chomping on it. His eyes followed my hand like the Mona Lisa.

If bluefish grew to 100#'s I would move to Wyoming and fish for trout. They are nasty critters. I have 10 fillets in the smoker as I write this post. Smoked bluefish is yummy. Having a party next week, smoked bluefish pate and fillet will go very well w/my new batch of Hoppy Ale.

bloocrab 09-24-2006 05:56 PM

19#s on some old stinky squid <<back when I mainly chunked...it had an elephant like head, BEST FIGHT I'VE EVER HAD on a surf rod ~

striprman 09-24-2006 06:02 PM

I made bluefish chowder the other day. 2 cans of canned sweet potatos, canned carrots, fried onions in a half stick of butter, water, a little pepper and whole milk. Put in 4 filets from a couple 7 pounders. Cut the read meat out (always). Came out good and tasty.

23.75lbs. Old Man Shoal Spetember new moon 1981 with Bobby Perimian on his "Foolish Pleasure" 32 Fortier. Wire with a Gibbs GTS-3 Blue Mackerel Swimmer.

October 1983 (the same night the Marines in Lebanon got hit. Dave Kosweski, myself, Pete Trainor and Steve Brito. Race Point, Loaded 7 inch Redfins, 16lb Ande Tournament Green line on spinning wrapped Lami GLB-108-1Ms'. I had 5 between 17 and 19 pounds, Pete had 7 over 17 to 20 pounds and Steve had a similar number, Prize went to Ski who hauled in a 22 pounder. If we had known enough to have it entered into the IGFA for a record he would still hold the record for 16lb test Bluefish. All surf caught all on loaded Redfins.

Biggest Bluefish I ever saw was one night in 74' when working for Capt. Lucky Singleton on the Sea-Witch, mate from the Piranha, tied up next to us, woke me up in the wee hours to see it. It was caught on a night trip off of the path in Truro in CC Bay. 25.8oz. It was a monster.

I got this blue off p-town earlier this year. The fishing was slow so that helped make this feel even bigger, but it was 17lbs and gave a great fight.

When I was a mate on a boat in Quincy 1986 - 89 blues were the only game in town. Head out to graves, troll rapalas, set the clicker, hear the reel buzz ......catch blues. good times :uhuh: .

BigFish 09-24-2006 06:34 PM

big jay 09-24-2006 08:31 PM

My grandfather at one time held the RI state record - I believe 24.5lbs. I have the pic on my computer but am having trouble uploading it. Any tips on resizing, and I'll put it up.

CAL 09-24-2006 09:03 PM

I feel small compared to some of you guys. My biggest is only about 13#, never weighed but another site member was there and estimated, I'll take his word for it.

How big is that one in Red Top? Biggest I've ever seen.

Swimmer 09-24-2006 10:09 PM

My largest bluefish

17.60 pounds, caught at sunrise the last day of the vineyard derby 1985.:bl:

BigFish 09-25-2006 04:40 AM

I like bluefish and I think thats really all that matters......this is a "biggest bluefish" thread not a "who hates bluefish" thread.....if you hate them so much then just be happy there is one less!:jump1:

basswipe 09-25-2006 04:59 AM

In 1986 in late fall I was fortunate to be present for a blitz of truly huge bluefish. Most over 20#s with many as large 22-23#S!I have yet to ever see anything close to that since though I did get an 18#er earlier this year.

Striperhound 09-25-2006 05:53 AM

Larry,

2 Years ago Labor Day weekend 39" 21.6 Lbs sucked down a Pencil Popper then sounded and fought like a nice bass. never surfaced until I slid it onto the rocks. Thought for sure I had a 30 lb bass until I slid it onto the rocks.

Karl F 09-25-2006 06:00 AM

I am surprised that clammer hasn't blasted off yet ;)
he must be undercovers
he will go nuts when he reads thits thread, I bet... :uhuh:

eelman 09-25-2006 06:07 AM

As Habs said, The hill used to have some monsters, there not there anymore like that and that was about 12-13 years ago....fish between 15 and 20lbs in september and October mixed in with the bass.....They do fight like nothing else........

vineyardblues 09-25-2006 06:08 AM

Who knows.. 14-15lbs were fairly common deep water off newport years ago... Numbskull was right though different animal in shallow water...
in a boulder field a couple years ago... in the middle of a good night of 10-15lb bass I had a swirl, set and screamed line... after a good fight I pulled up a 14+blue snagged in the back with a 7" rebel... PIEMMA heard me cursing up a bluestreak from 100yds away, thought I finally had my 40 that night... d'oh

zimmy 09-25-2006 07:32 AM

likwid 09-25-2006 07:44 AM

22 and change off Seguin Island Maine.

beamie 09-25-2006 07:54 AM

16.5 Gutted. So that may have been 18.5 on a bucktail at the dumping ground outside Boston around 1984.

GeoffT 09-25-2006 07:58 AM

I don't care what NIB says, even though I'm a fellow Jerseyan. :D But I'll take a big blue anyday just for the fight they put up. And they're getting bigger and bigger not to mention more numerous every year with the huge schools of bunker we're getting now.

My biggest so far was about 35-36" in length, not sure of the weight. But I was at a huge bluefish blitz at IBSP this spring where blues up to 20 lbs were taken. Some of those things I saw caught were absolute monsters, just big nasty-looking buggers. :err:
