I'm certainly well above the Minimum wage, so its not like this would affect me. But i can just see a ton of employess being pissed off, seeing the guys with little to noskills getting a $2hr raise, and the rest of the skilled guys getting squat.

This could backfire on employers is my point i guess.

spence 11-08-2006 01:14 PM

It would be phased in over time, not a huge jump. Additionally I believe their desire is to tie the Federal min wage to the inflation rate, which may make some sense.

It certainly may cause some issues, but it seems to me if you're going to have a Federal Minimum Wage, you might as well do it in a manner that delivers on the original intent.

I guess the million dollar question is what is their definition of the "high end"?

$150,000 in the Northeast, or California, isn't the same as $150,000 in other places. And I'm betting "high end" is going to be pegged at less than that :humpty:

The difference is, Gates actually knows what he's talking about.

?
He gets re-elected just because of the name. Conditioned response. Election=drunken Kennedy.
Kind of like when you tease a dog.
Hold up a treat; they drool.
Say "election" way too many people in this state just think "kennedy"
I think un-convicted felon.
It is a felony to leave the scene of an accident with injury in MA.
At least for the rest of us peasants.

Skitterpop 11-08-2006 11:26 PM

He does have much experience and is very knowledgeable.

He is also the brunt of all Kennedey angst....tough job but as a long time veteran he is up to it.

say what you will... :hidin:

On paper it certainly appears that way. On that count I am somewhat hopeful.

One thing I am concerned about is the Dem leadership, particularly in the House. Speaker Pelosi is no moderate and she has been stewing for quite some time to push her leftist agenda.

They may have taken the approach of campaigning from the center-right, but may vote left while in office.

I ask: to what extent will these relative (d) newcomers, who appear to be more conservative than even some of their (r) predecessors, buckle to party discipline when the hot-button issues are decided?

This election was a referendum on the Iraq war and President Bush. But have Americans, in their fit of indignation, let the #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& cat out of the bag? (apologies to cat owners).

We shall see.

In any event, it will be interesting to see how the dems fare when the economy tanks, as it is poised to do so now (all the leading GDP indicators I track have been headed SOUTH since June). Will Americans blame it on the President, or will Congress get blamed too? Will proposed minimum wage legislation and higher taxes nudge the economy sooner into recession?

It's the economy, stupid, right?

sort of a side thought, heard this on the radio yesterday,
isnt it amazing that ALL the voting issues, minorities being left out, faulty machines, etc. were FIXED in just 2 years? Wow....Im sure it has nothing to do with the dems winning

I think you're misreading the situation. There were still plenty of reports of voting problems and potential fraud.

It's an off year election for one and the Dem victory in the House was pretty clear cut though...the outrage has more been over close races with suspect results in big elections.

Considering how the GOP has demonized the Dems the past decade, how are you going to spin it if they continue to have mainstream appeal?

Spence, if it was turned around and the repubs won with the ame %s, you'd have Al Sharpton on CNN complaining that minorities couldnt vote, you'd have accusations of fraud, broken machines etc. There is NO way you can argue that.

Don't agree.

If this was a close race I think you'd see that behavior from either side...the last few Presidential elections were very close. And while I wouldn't say there was wholesale fraud, there are some serious unresolved claims from 2004.

Had the GOP managed to dramatically increase their position the Dems would have blamed Kerry and gone away.

No kidding. Wendy's just announced they will outsource the guy that takes the drive thru order to India. I can't imagine that many businesses like that will survive a $2/hr increase in minimum wage. Bump it up $2 and we'll have to build a freakin moat with gators to go with that wall.

Neither did the Democratic party. It was a few left-wing nuts...who's only audience would be Nebe were it not for Rush Limbaugh and his clones trying to strip the American flag of it's blue stripes in the name of big advertising revenues.

It was the GOP that branded a vote for Democrats as a vote for terrorisim.

I guess the people didn't get the memo :)
