Public safety indeed.

An answer to what? Why cops direct traffic at construction sites? I know you hate the word, kid. But terrorism is real.

There's a big difference between being aware of terrorism and being afraid for you life. You should probably learn it before you throw things like '9/11' around.

No, you'd have to be a real Bushbot banging the 9/11 drum to ever believe a shoe could be used as a bomb. Besides what do shoes have to do with flying planes into buildings.

Exactly, so why wait until the things blow up the bridges to say, "I guess those cute little things WERE bombs" I'd rather be careful than sorry

right on:btu:

spinncognito 01-31-2007 07:18 PM

What gets me is that it took ALL FFFFING DAY to figure it out. They actually blew up several of these LITE-BRITES! Why did someone NOT do a simple internet search on that character? The city/state wasted THOUSANDS of OUR tax money on something most fourth graders  could have figured out in a half-hour. WTF!

spence 01-31-2007 07:19 PM

No doubt that once it appeared there was a repeat threat that extreme caution was justified.

Yes, I know...9/11 was a serious defeat and we must step up our awareness...

But we have become a society whipped up into a terror frenzy. For this I blame Terrorists, the Bush Admin and certianly the Media who's driven by market share far more than idiology.

I'm just happy it was a stunt and not real, as you should be as well.

Bin Laden would be laughing in his cave right about now.

striprman 01-31-2007 07:21 PM

That is the most stupid show on TV

Bob Thomas 01-31-2007 07:27 PM

There's no doubt we could "Monday night quarterback" this issue to death, if not done already. It's like saying the interference call against the Pats was wrong. It's done, theres nothing we can do from it other than LEARN!

How many dummy devices need to be destroyed before something actually goes off?

It's a judgement call. None of us (that I know of) were there when this happened. I know that if I arrived on a scene like this, I'd be taking extreme caution too. Blame it on whoever you want, Bush, terrorism..whatever. Like I said, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Unless we know the particulars from people on scene and investigators (which we will probably never see) we need to keep something in mind here. They acted in OUR best interest. They were out there protecting us.

A beautiful quote from "A Few Good Men"

Lt. Weinberg: Why do you like them so much?
Galloway: Because they stand upon a wall and say, "Nothing's going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch."

Believe it or not, folks, MOST cops feel this way...I know I do!

Have a good night and enjoy your sleep. Someone out there (Cop) is trying to protect you.

Amen, If we could divert some of this anger away from the people who are looking out for us and direct it at those who truly wish us harm, we'd all be safer for it.

From what I understood it was "attached" about 12-15 feet up on one of the posts that supports 93 above Sullivan Station and the commuter rail.
(There is I-93, and the commuter rail, and the orange line and nothing else there)
Longfellow Bridge, the BU bridge, Tufts NE med Center.
Stunt? Not funny.
I actually sent a road tech to Memorial drive & BU bridge as they shut it down today. Black suburbans.
The MA S.P. are usually in blue & gray.

Nothing happened so it's all Bush's fault for the "the terror frenzy"
IF something happened I'm sure that would have been Bush's fault too.
Right?

How many times do you see an extra cruiser at a construction site doing nothing? And as a matter of fact, how come we're one of the few states that uses cops as flag men on road construction?
Hey Dip%$%$%$%$, this isnt a courtesy of the public, the Contractors have to HIRE off duty officers. And its done for safety reasons

sok 01-31-2007 09:33 PM

From what I have seen the extra cruiser on the site is the one with the radar gun.
It's the third one a mile down the road that will pull you over.
At least on the Mass pike.
And the contractors have to hire a UNION police detail in MA.
Because it's Massachusetts.
And the UNIONS say so.
Argument for another thread/day.

(Ever have you life threatened because you not in a union? I have. More than once.)

TheSpecialist 01-31-2007 10:20 PM

Hey SOK let's not make this a union bashing thread alright.

Nevemind all the cops that had to stay late and cover shifts, but what about the doctors, nurses, and ambulance drivers who were told to wait around for a possible catastrophe.

Saltheart 02-01-2007 12:16 AM

I can't believe an organization would do this without informing local authorities ahead of time. Someone had their air supply cut off by their bum cheeks on this one.

I predict the city lawyers will look for some violated city ordinance and if they find one , Turner will get a huge bill to cover the cost of the response.

Anyone who thinks a cop would not approach this sort of device with caution in 2007 has the same brain oxygen deficiency as the people who put the devices around the Hub. This is not like a waterballoon with the consequences being wet pants. If they were bombs , someone dies. i'd be very cautious if I were sent to investigate.

Also the idea that after finding one was a hoax , they should just ignore the rest is pretty shallow. . Is there a better way to get a real IED past security procedures than to flood the area with dummy decoys?

Anyway , I hope it costs the network 100 million. You want to make money with advertising stunts ...fine. pay the piper if you're too stupid to do it right.

For sure Saltheart.

They made an "arrest" overnight also.

I just wanted to be clear here since the old age is showing around these parts. ;)

Dude they have this awesome concept in hospitals and trauma units.
Its called "shifts".
You can get hurt any time of day and they'll have the proper care waiting for you.
They have another FASCINATING device. Its called a pager. If you need someone to call you you just call this.. "pager" and it beeps at them with the number! I know, revolutionary. You can thank me later. :D :hihi:

TheSpecialist 02-01-2007 08:15 AM

Likwid having worked at Brigham & Women's hospital I know how it works, and I know a couple of nurses who work 12-8, and were told they had to stay. You see that when you go to the ER, you usually sit around waiting very lengthy amounts of time to be treated, unless you are bleeding to death. Most hospital er's are vastly understaffed for the amount of cases that present themselves at a given time. Hospitals have emergency plans in place for large scale catastrophes which generally entail forcing shifts to stay, calling in personnel that are off. Maybe the old age is showing on this board, but maybe the younger generation is what's wrong with this crappy world. I mean you don't see us running around killing each other , shooting up schools and such, all these damn video games are making them soft, go out and shoot some hoops for godsake... :rollem:

UserRemoved1 02-01-2007 08:29 AM

I'll say one thing. WZLX has not stopped talking about this all morning since 5:30 when K&M come on.

Least I won a free T Shirt today :D If anyone heard I correctly answered the question on the superbowl flush. Trivia hijack...The amount of sewerage that will be flushed during 1/2 time on the superbowl will be equivalent to 39 minutes of water that goes over Niagara Falls :bl:

Yeah, I know, you guys aren't shooting up schools.
You're running around starting pointless wars we can never win (TWICE in one generation! Good job!).
Destroying countries with the almighty dollar.
And making it impossible for the 'youth of today' to get ahead.

The Dad Fisherman 02-01-2007 08:36 AM

I don't think the problem is what they looked like......they could have been teddy bears for all anyone cared. Its the Locations these idiots chose. Ever since 9/11 we've been hearing about the possibility of having our bridges attacked and these knuckleheads put these all around the bridge abutments. they should have just put a couple on the LNG tanks and called it a day.

If you see dozens of similar looking devices, whether they look like toys or cartoon characters (face it, They aren't going to look like an Alarm Clock taped to Road Flares), a bell has to go off and it needs to be looked at.....Unfortunately thats the day and age we live in.

I personally think Law Enforcement did exactly what they are supposed to in a situation like this....Proceeded with caution and made sure everyone was safe.

The last thing I would have wanted to hear was that this officers last words were "Aw Look, its that cartoon character Ignignokt from Aqua Teen" BOOM and he's all done.

Like our Grandparents have always said "Better Safe Than Sorry"

ter·ror·ism – noun - the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.

The state of FEAR. Guess who is winning the war on terrorism?

Slinger 02-01-2007 09:14 AM

" An arrest was made overnight." Was it Ted Turner? Nope! Was it the COO of the carton network? nope! Was it the publicist that ran the campaign? Nope! It was some poor schmuck near Boston that took on a job so he could afford to live! Typical!

Nope, not even.
They were part of the unpaid street team hired by marketing to put them up. They typically get no compensation other than free tickets to see the movie.

So basically all they arrested were a bunch of fans of the show.
Good job.

Yeah, These guy's are patsys for sure. But Menino came on the news this morning and pretty much said the same thing. These guy's deserve some punishment but it shouldn't be and wont be much. Menino is aiming for the higher ups as should be the case.

fishpoopoo 02-01-2007 09:53 AM

they were in 10 cities for two weeks, but that doesn't really help if most of the folks in boston were unaware of the ad campaign.

post 9/11, i can see why the police response was what it was. just a sign 'o the times. wires and crap sticking out of objects placed on private and public property without permission= reasonably suspected bomb. no if's and's or buts.

now, turner broadcasting must be really happy ... they got more free p.r. for this program than they could reasonably expect.

of course, the third party marketing group that dreamed up this stunt (two young guys in their '20's i think) is in big doo doo with the mass attorney general.

for cnn, the fines/civil suit settlements will be just another marketing expense.

:laugha:

and how sad that is...
I have all 4 seasons of the Aqua Teens and there is NOTHING better on TV to watch to get a laugh...

I cant wait for this movie.... Its the ultimate in BAD tv that is GOOD.... SO had... in fact, HORRIBLE, that its VERY funny.

I have a soccerball sized Meatwad on my desk.

Maybe the terrorists should watch the show to learn a thing or two. It could change their lives....

SUN POWER changes EVERYONE.
