Definitely large breaking fish surrounding the boat..

Or a real LARGE boil behind a plug. That's probably the best...the anticipation of the strike.

As mush as I like fishing alone I still prefer when a good buddy and me are kicking ass. Nothing beats being in the middle of a blitz and getting doubles every cast and having a little tourney to see who can get the most.

Hey Raven, what was the guy shooting at with the Thompson submachine gun?

Swimmer 02-05-2007 12:03 PM

All kidding aside with the girl answers I gave previously thier have been three times when I was startled, heart pounded, while fishing. First time was when fishing a jetty just before dawn when a huge bluefish hit a Spoffords Ballistic Missile that was splashing across the surface. Landed that one. Second time while fishing a pier not far from where the first time occured I was fishing a very heavy, 5m 10" rod using mucho bait on a # 10 stainless mustad, when something took the bait and I couldn't turn the fish with 40# test line. I was either going to loose the rod or cut the line, I cut the line after about 15 minutes of holding on for dear life in a gale with the dock swaying back and forth in the wiind. Third time while fishing on the south side of the vineyard one morning looking for albies when a fish hit my deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& and when it did a splash happened like a boulder dropped from the sky. Just as I was starting to loosen the drag the fish straightened the hook and that was it.

One more thing, I am startled everytime a rat as big as a cat runs across my footwear when fishing.

Fishing on the Powderpoint Bridge and having a big'un break the surface to hit the Storm Shad I was just pulling out of the water.
This happens at least once EVERY year. I laugh afterwards, :jump1: because it's usually when I've gotten relaxed, and let my guard down.
Having the fish jerk the rod back like that always gets me going.

Same bridge alone late on a moonless foggy night, having the feeleing that I could turn around at any second and have some apparition (ghost) right in front of me. When the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, I just change locations.

Heart Pounding

When I am working a pencil popper and a large fish takes a few swipes at it, or is just cruising behind it.

Catching fish on top. I've seen the aliens off of Race Point too.

Two years ago I was schoolie fishing down under a bridge with an ultralight. I hooked a schoolie and as he surfaced within a couple of feet from me up along side of it, came a monster cow. I didn't know if it was his big brother, looking to protect him or thinking that he was an easy snack. I felt totally out gunned and left. I returned later that night with mojo gear and the night after that and the night after that... nada. Still haunts me.

But as far a fishing goes, catching on top water. Or watching my kids catch fish.

The best is being in the middle of a huge blitz of stripers and bluefish!!!
Can't unhook and catch another one fast enough!!!
Also, fishing Plum Island from the surf on a cool, foggy nite with no one else around!!! Then you feel someone is watching you and you see something in the fog, or is it just your imagination? Scary!!!

ThrowingTimber 02-06-2007 01:02 PM

Cal dude excellent taste! :claps:

yeah I'm a hook up junky as well, it can be a live bait or a lure, its the anticipation of that initial run for me that gets me psyched!!

Triple D 02-06-2007 03:28 PM

Standing on an open beach watching the birds, bait and fish coming your way...

On the rocks all night doing squat until the rip suddenly forms, the false dawn breaks the horizon, the planets align and it's pure striper mayhem for the next hour. This is usually the time when I get a wind knot or some other tackle failure.

Catching fish with a chosen plug and no one else near you is hooked up...

fishermanjim 02-07-2007 02:57 PM

swimming back after retreving your plug,,, because the line snapped due to a overrun birds nest line malfunction on your calcutta,,,knowing how much that damm plug cost,,,

Flaptail 02-07-2007 03:07 PM

I don't care what you all say and think I still say a nice pair of boobs beats a fish anyday.

Bazza 02-07-2007 04:20 PM

Seeing breaking fish and throwing top water...When a fish hits your eel and you know it has to be somethng large...jigging at the canl and getting a monster hit, that is not sea weed or kelp.... In Ptown it does get kind of spooky when the fog rollls in, and you are by yourself on the beach

goosefish 02-07-2007 04:49 PM

Sight casting to pre-spawn smallies.
