I don't believe in the color theory just yet! But I am in love with the beauty of these hand made plugs.

Try to match what they might be feeding on. If you are familiar with a few spots and the time of year and bait, match that. That mix of many different kinds of lures and plugs is to "follow the seasons" as the seasons change, the bait changes. Try to use a lure that matches that bait for the season and conditions/locations you are fishing. The amount of lures you will use (custom/tin/rubber) and even bait will be dependent on where you are fishing, time of year and prevalent baitfish in the area. Change lures depending on location and season, you need alot of different lures and color definately matters.

Vogt is dead-on on the color thing, as far as I'm concerned. Numbskull provided the killer lure list. A handful of lures in black, white, or yellow can work on most fish most of the time. Action and matching the hatch are key, but if there's too much bait around (I call it the Lotto syndrome), something radically different from the bait is needed. If you have an exact replica, it's competing with millions of the real thing. Size, action, or color that are very different from the bait may work in those conditions. Buy a handful of lures (Numbskull's list is something to shoot for, but you can get some cheaper plastic mixed in, also), and learn when and how to work them. But, one thing you should learn early: when it comes to fishing, avoid the words "always" and "never". The fish don't read the same books we do.

When one fishes at night, only, one can't possibly think a colored plug has anything more to do with catching fish, than the confidence one has in that plug. How well would you all think an albino eel would do fished at night? It'll probably do just as well as any other naturally colored eel.

Also, a major factor for me is what the weather is!!!
Different plugs and color on a sunny day compared to a rainy or cloudy day!!! And also factor in the surf conditions!!! Different size plugs for different types of surf!!! |
Good wood
I think you have all your ducks in a row young man. Your parents should be proud.
