i have a stradic 4000 on an 8 ft st croix. It is still fairly smooth after 2 seasons of use, but I would more than likely go with a spheros rather than a stradic if I were to do it again. I used a sheros 8000 on my 10 ft stick, and it held up alot better than my stradic, and it got more use.

I'll second that. I like the old school stuff... I have an ancient greenie 710 that is like new. It is perfect for the schoolies that around this time of year. Easy to keep up and strong- it is a simple reel and it doesnt break.

For new stuff on the cheap, Okuma does make decent stuff. I haven't tried the Shimano's, but obviously people like them.

we have been fishing the okuma vs 40 for two years and so you know we shore guide and charter these reels have taken a lot of abuse and we are still using them this year . capt.bill:uhuh:
