good job guys!
though i had prior engagements that i could not change, i will be making the next cleanup day. I don't fish off the beach, I do boat out of the Merrimack, and like you said, boaters carry alot of the blame. Especially in that location! When I fish out of Gloucester I often see this boat that does a booze cruise. On more than one occassion I see beer cans go flying overboard and I just wonder how much trash that ONE boat dumps into our waters during a season Makes sure you post the next day here! Well done, again! Bob, hope its a cheap fix. maybe you can find the part next clean up :) |

Nice Pics, alot of trash was taken off and that dumpster was full then the back-hoe crushed it down a couple of times, it would have been good to have it both weekend days
the truck is in need of repair it has been sense the end of last season, and I have been putting it off. I have a brother that is a mechanic also an apprentice that I work with is also a mechanic so repairs will be less than if I had to go to a shop. |
LOL the backhoe crushed it down AGAIN after we were done.
We came off at about 2:30, not enough time to go back out again for their 3:00 quit time. 2 days would have been great. |
Yeah, it was cold and WINDY! Thanks Gone Fishin for the ride back to Lot #7, it was a long walk into the wind, filled many a bag-o-trash on the way.
Sorry I got off to a late start, first chance I had to get a decent night of sleep in a almost a month and a half. When I got there they weren't letting anyone else out with trucks, so I went to the south end where I figured there would be fewer people picking up trash. There were quite a few volunteers there, but I got the sense that aside from a few small groups most who were there filling trash bags chimed in only because they they saw the beach clean-up signs after they got there, but at least they did volunteer and help out. For the most part it seemed to me that only the surf fishermen/women came deliberately. Oh, and I do apologize to the many birders I had to work around. Hope we didn't disturb your tranquil sojourn or offend you too much by poluting your telescopic view with the sight of a human being moving about the refuge with a purpose. Sorry for the rant, its just that my "free" time is precious and few, so I get a little irked when I have a job to do and and my progress keeps getting inhibited by the devil may care "fart around and take our sweet time" without pitching in at all crowd. Especially when I know they are the source of many of the complaints that are fueling access limits and keeping the fishing crowd off the few and far between fishing spots in order to protect a bird that by and large is too stupid to get out of its own way. Guess I'm still a little cranky.... :ss: |
LOL I just about fell off my chair when I read that! Too funny Togue:rotflmao:
There must have been 30 of them with their telescopes watching us unload the trucks. Oh thanks for the laugh. We are cleaning out the truck now. I think we can build a sandbox in the back yard now.:bl: |
Martian and others, this clean up was for the refuge,
along with us fishermen there were boys and girl scouts and a church group I am sure there were a few concerned people that just wanted to help out. remember all help is welcomed There wasn't really a big announcement about the clean up until it was put on 3 fishing forums or there wouldn't have been many fishermen either we have the MBBA to thank |

Overall, with the cold and wind it was no problem helping out. Tattoo (whom I've yet to meet) did a great job of getting the word out and he should feel good about it. I feel good just chipping in for 2 hours. Enjoyed finishing the afternoon off at the PISC jr. program with the Kevins involving all the kids in lure building. My daughter helped build a tiny spook (Sknunky Joe)and I have the parts for my son, who couldn't attend, to finish a bottle neck popper. |
[QUOTE=togue;578091]Yeah, it was cold and WINDY! Thanks Gone Fishin for the ride back to Lot #7, it was a long walk into the wind, filled many a bag-o-trash on the way.
Thanks to you Martin! You walked and picked a good half of that beach and left a truck load of rubbish for us to pick up. I stopped and started to pick up a couple of cloth bags that I mistook for rubbish. When looking closely at them I realized that they belonged to a group of bird lookers. They questioned me and I asked if they were volunteers for the project and got only a "no way " from them. When we met up in lot one after loading the dumpster I didn't get a chance to ask you if you swam the plugs and how they were. How was the action? Thanks again to all the fishermen that spend time on that beach and showed up to help out. By the way The refuge is now officially "closed for plover recovery" |
TattooBob - Sorry for the rant! As an avid surfcaster I guess I need to work harder to be tolerant and supportive of everyone's right to beach access, whether they support mine or not.
As I said, I found many volunteers out there. What's more, the folks I encountered who were actually helping out were friendly and looked to be enjoying it almost like a normal part of their "day at the beach". I doubt much if any of the trash this time of year came from beachgoers, most likely washed out from the Merrimack or off a boat. Wish I could find the guy who likes orange juice in a peculiarly shaped little plastic bottle, I must have picked up a hundred of them all along the beach. Anyway, you got the word out Bob, and many thanks to you and the MBBA for that. I hope the Refuge staff appreciated the effort everyone put in, maybe they should permit the public in general, and the fishing community in particular even more opportunities to show we can and do help out and hold up our end. GoneFishin - Wind made it difficult, but I did try and cast a few near the rocks, and I thought they looked pretty good. A father with his two kids came over and asked some questions about what I was fishing for, and indicated he wanted to get his family into the surf fishing act this summer, so I pointed him in the direction of Kay's for help gearing up. Stopped at another spot on the way back up the Merrimack, got a lot of test casts in, took a lot of notes, I think I have a couple of winners but still need some more tuning and testing. The Spring run is almost here!!!! |
