Not for nuttin, there are a lot of RI commercials fishing Mass waters and this has been historically the case. As current regs/allocations are based on "historic" landings, and "historically" a fair amount of RI anglers have always fished Mass commercial (believe it or not in Mass waters), it is not unreasonable to see RI anglers fish the Mass season.

ThrowingTimber 07-23-2008 10:00 AM

its halarious rhody comms can take what 6 ri fish daily.

Mass guys come in and take 30 rhody fish.

It would stand to reason that rhody comms make a move to bag it and ban rhody comm fishing for stripers so the mass guys cant pick their pockets, or have the mass dailys lowered so the mass guys cant pick their pockets.

I dunno I guess everyone believes that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. I'm not into the comm. striper fishery :happy: its senseless...

rhody comms getting short changed and their pockets picked by the mass guys should make a move to ban comm. striper fishing in ri water Period. Go get their 6 pack licenses and run 2 or 3 charters a day. The dough from charters would CRUSH what they get for killing their 6 fish :read: Oh wait I put 3 seconds of thought into that didnt I..... Ohhh and if they run lobster traps, they can bait traps, go to dock pick up charter go out, come back drop off pick up charter go out, drop off the last charter check traps... ohhh wow I wonder if a day like that would put more dough in pockets than killing 6 fish LOL ha. hahahhahahaha

Intro statement...I gave up my comm license for personal reasons years ago

Let's not forget the fact that many RI residents hold a RI License and a MA Comm License. Using Throwing Timbers term, these anglers can land/sell 6 fish in RI and 30 fish in MA essentially picking their own pockets. On the other hand, a MA resident can not go to RI and get a RI comm license (unless that has changed in the last couple years). Although I agree that crossing state waters to get either limit should not be allowed, I am far more concerned with all of the S-B fishing going on in the EEZ by anglers from and in the waters off both states.

Oh well...I just wanted to throw in that comment...I have to get ready for the MA Recreational Registry Steering Committee Meeting this affternoon. Oh goody.

I was going to make that point about Mass comms not being able to get a RI license. I believe in reciprocity--up to a point. When I can't get licensed to do something in your state, you shouldn't be able to do it in mine.

But since I don't hold a Mass comm license (sorry, Goose ;) ), it's not my fight. If I had one, you bet your ass I'd be screaming to DMF to not issue licenses to out-of-staters. RI doesn't offer reciprocity, and NH, Maine and CT are gamefish states. I wonder how many people who pushed gamefish for their own states hold a Mass commercial license?

As far as the EEZ goes--I personally don't care. 1.1 million pounds is 1.1 million pounds no matter where the fish come from. It gets filled every year in less than 6 weeks. If taking fish from the EEZ fills the quota sooner, so be it. If guys are raiding RI waters and take the fish to Mass to sell, so be it. The inshore Mass fishery probably benefits from it. But, since it's the law, I don't condone it.

FishTwoO 07-23-2008 11:10 AM

How about setting a three or four fish per day limit for out of state comm. license holders.This would eliminate alot of the hanky panky that's going on especially stock piling and tr#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g fish from out of state waters.They need to make it financially unfeasable for wrong doers to operate without hurting the legit guys.Just my two cents worth.

How?
All they do is stuff them in a freezer and wait anyhow.

FishTwoO 07-23-2008 11:21 AM

Alllow only three or four to be sold per day,maybe open sale days every other or every third day for out of staters.

So they high grade and only sell the big ones out of the freezer and hock the rest at the local chinese food joint.

Which is pretty much what they do already...

Flaptail 07-23-2008 11:27 AM

Make it a gamefish with no sale! You can always pump gas or serve burgers at McTomaines for xtra cash!

Well when there's no more fish then where are all the "oh i do it to offset my gas costs" comms gonna get their money?

And yes, I'd like fries with that.

The Mass quota is/was based on [OLD] landings >>> which were made up by a good percentage of Ri Anglers /selling in mass // otherwise the Mass quota wouldn,t be 30 fish on the days that,s its open & the 5 on sunday ;;

many moons ago > you just caught fish & sold them /only restricting was they had to be 16"
you didn,t need a commercial license in either state ;;

NOW {{ MASS }} still allows you to get a license // to anyone one from any state / one reason there are approx 6000 mass commercials ;;
In RI you CAN>T get a Commercial license to catch anything .......
they have one lincense available / which allows you to catch /some no value fish //bluefish . dabs, etc.

SOOOOOOOOOO its not just the Mass commercials that can,t get the license /its ANYBODY .>>>>>>>>>
the only way to get a RI license is >..supposely if 3 or 4 are not renewed in a given year the state mat opt to open one >..even though I,ve never heard of it ::
The other way is to buy a guys business / boat / pots , etc &&&& only if he has enough landings ;;

there are hundreds of fisherman who are kicking themselves in the ass for not keeping their licenses during the mo[SP} not just R/R but mainly shellfisherman ;;

Also RI season is a joke / it open is open 5 days a week w/a 5 fish limit stating in june / &&&&&&& every year the state of RI closes it early //[this year] less than two weeks / because the estimate that we are nearing the quota // [f%^&*() guessestimate

Then they open for 3 days around labor day ...with only a 3 fish limit && then close again 7 open sometime in october with either a 3 or 5 fish limit & THAT DEPENDS if the fish god got laid the nite before ;; &&&&&&&&&&& In the last 3 seasons / the RI limit was not reached by R/R .. the let the traps & draggers finish it off ;;

With this being said .. Mass has the larger quota thanks to many old time RI commercial fisherman & the mass commercial season is a f $%^&*()&^ zoo because the state lets anyone with the money become a commercial fisherman ;;

take all the fish solf in the RI & Mass commercial seasons && it doesn,t equal #^&#^&#^&#^&-%$%$%$%$ to the by-catch kill/rec >.take home & bucket brigrade ;;
add the slaughter that goes on down south in the winter fishery ....... & this whole thread isn,t a drop in the f $%^&*()(*& bucket >:wid:

:rtfm:Truer words have yet to be spoken! Add piss to the right and Mikey nailed it.

Hey Mike, hope your doing okay! Kill a bluefish for me, we haven't seen that many up this way ( don't want to make you jealous or anything but I have only caught four all season so far!)

Err, that's kinda what I was trying to say but I wasn't as detailed, clear, or eloquent as Clammer :lama::fishslap: :hee:

animal 07-23-2008 02:59 PM

Just to add a little clarity on a point that was skirted around.As far as reciprocity goes,there are NO NEW PERMITS in RI.It doesn't matter if you're from RI,Mass,or South Dakota.

Mike P 07-23-2008 03:35 PM

With all due respect MIke--historical landing figures are just someone's best guess. As many New Yorkers as Rhode Islanders fished Mass. No one was licensed, no catch figures were ever accurately recorded, most of the bass was shipped to Fulton Fish market, and guessing what the distribution was among Mass/RI/NY/CT/anywhere else.....:huh:

Clammer 07-23-2008 04:48 PM

MIKE

your right .. the NY boys did a number in the surf on the cape //

what I meant was , Mass, RI, NY or Conn fishmen sold most of thire fish to mass dealers . the guys fishing the outer cape .. really had no rational choice / && I., pretty sure CoNn had already started to stop the sale of bass in that state & we in RI .it was strictly a finincial [sp] move . Mass was paying much higher than RI .
you could go to Spooners in westport & get good money & wait for the check && then many of us got nailed by the IRS .. or you could go to N/B & get paid less /but got paid on the spot ;
So when they were figuring out the quota,s //mass was way high to some degree of the infux of fish caught out of state & sold in Mass>>>
&&&&&&&& ya had to piss to the right >><><

FishTwoO 07-23-2008 04:53 PM

Re; the original question.The Fisherman Mag. Under Snug Harbor reports two guys with a hefty catch from the Vineyard 40,41,45,48,49,52,and 53.Are they the same guys or is it just a coincidence?

Jenn 07-23-2008 05:33 PM

SOOOOOOO....Who was it already!!?????

Clammer 07-23-2008 06:10 PM

I havn,t read that yet / but I,ll bet my rig /those arn,t MAss BAss ....... many of the mass commercials are fluking .. the bass have been WAAAAAAAY off ><><><

It doesn't matter how many or how few.

Someone has to take a stand somewhere.

If you're just gonna sit back with the "well everyone else is doing it" excuse then you're just another part of the problem.

ya think? I don't understand the logic in this ruling. They can fish in our season but we can't sell into there's? MA DMF is F'ed up.

If you saw how much RI bunker is dumped into Gay Head waters you would be amazed...truck loads....every comm day.

It's waaaay off cause they have been pounding the same spots HARD for years! ...Commer'l guys just don't get it. Some have the gaul to complain about the fishing. Gimmeabreak I spoke to a comm lobersterman who was whining about how poor the lobsters are and wants to double the number of pots he has....I asked him...do you think that will solve the problem?...He said, that will solve MY problem. Herein lies the real problem.

Sea Dangles 07-23-2008 07:55 PM

Many RI anglers will fish MA for fluke and then move right on for bass. The angler is a member of team striper in the OTW contest. I think the 56# will squeak into the top 10. That combined with another members' recent shore caught 48# should put us in good position for now.

FishTwoO 07-23-2008 08:20 PM

Sea Dangles, That should make Bruce happy!
