Defensive Tactics

You guys have forgotten the most available tool at your disposal. The thousands of five to ten pound barnacle covered rocks at your feet. If they get that close, smashing one of them in the shin/ankle area will break the bone rather quickly and painfully.

How about a whistle around your neck along with the knife. There are so many of us here that are there so often if we heard a whistle blow we could easily alert authorites to a problem in the general direction of the whistle. Christ at 3 a.m. the sound would travel on and on.

I'd have to say if you get jumped from behind after dark you'd best fight like a you know what.

Remember you have the right to use the force necessary that any prudent and ordinary person would use to defend themself/himself in the same situation.

Ya know somethin, I been fishin the ditch on late nights for the past 10 years or so and almost always travel alone. I always wondered if there was ever any trouble like this but I have never had a problem. Got my lic. to carry 3 years ago and I always got it with me down there so next time I'm draggin a bass over the tracks at the post office ....I'll be sure to have the safety off. ;)

I wouldn't advise you to keep on carrying along the Canal--your LTC isn't worth the plastic it's printed on there. It's a violation of Federal law for a non-LEO to carry a firearm on the Canal, except in the Scussett Reservation where hunting is permitted in season. You could lose that LTC if you're caught carrying on Federal property.

Regardless of that, shooting a bunch of unarmed kids is also likely to get you into even deeper trouble with the Barnstable DA's office. You'd have an uphill fight to convince a jury that you felt that your life was in danger, and couldn't retreat with complete safety--and both of those are key to a claim of shooting in self-defense.

have this kiddo get on here at S-B and give a full description of his attackers so that anyone reading this thread can be lookin for them...and use the "power of
the group of S-B fishermen" against them...:af:

You think Lami would warranty a rod that broke while being used as a weapon of justice? Ive heard they are pretty good with warranty stuff. I could see putting a little to much behind a 5oz jig in that circumstance.

Joe 10-25-2008 02:01 PM

Is snapping off the tip of your Lami in the rectum of an attacker covered?

Of course we can all talk tough about what we'd do should we be attacked by a bunch of young punks, but what happens when they also decide to start arming themselves? What would keep them from also picking up stones and throwing them at you? A bunch of idiots like them with nothing to lose? Think about it, you're in more risk if you escalate the situation.

Those kids are bananas, they're all yellow and come in a bunch. They won't attack anyone in a group. Safety in numbers, folks. If you're heading out to the ditch in a sketchy area, make sure you've got your friends with you. I feel bad for the kid that got mugged, but who allows their 15 year old kid to go to the ditch alone, late at night, in that area? I understand that they shouldn't have to worry about it, but this is reality, right?

I wonder what Bourne PD is doing about this situation proactively?

Crafty Angler 10-26-2008 07:24 AM

I keep my Rapala filet knife visibly stuck in my belt and keep it as sharp as a straight razor.

I also have a fish billy stuck in my wader belt that's the same size and weight as an asp - that's the baton LEO's now carry instead of the old PR-24. I actually do use it to stiffen fish I'm going to keep, but it could really be used otherwise.

Time was that an idiot bent on relieving you of your wallet wouldn't **** with a fisherman - they knew a guy familiar with hunting and fishing is more than likely very capable of taking care of himself.

A good many of my friends are cops and I've been taught a few things with a Monadnock that will end a confrontation in short friggin' order if necessary. I was in the bar business for more than 25 years, full and part time time and some of the places were nicer than others I worked - I had to jump into more than a couple of brawls, and I could still do a one handed vault over a bar into my late 40's. My eye-hand is still surprisingly wicked for an old fart, too...

Yup, back in the day there was nothing like jumping into the middle of a New Bedford square-dance to get your motor runnin' :hihi:

Ahhhhh...the good old days.........

I'd run away. I'm surprisingly fast, especially when petrified.

Not that it really matters what time it was, but SweetD said it was 5:00pm - well before sunset. And I think most 15 year olds are well old enough to go fishing by themselves at any time.

OLD GOAT 10-26-2008 12:28 PM

How about posting this on a few telephone poles to let the punks know that we are informed and that we provide swimming lessons as well as skeet practice

Raven 10-26-2008 12:41 PM

lots of S-B eyes out there to look for the banana's
if they had a good description.....

CaptMike 10-27-2008 07:54 AM

I don't fish the canal much but when I was going over the bridge yesterday there were swarms of these shady looking kids. Obviously they're not all criminals but they looked like it. I'd definitely have some bear pepper spray if I were fishing alone.

[QUOTE=Mike P;631680]The maggots who live in the low income apartment complex across the street. You'll see them sitting on the steps of that closed Italian market on the corner of Adams St and Sandwich Rd, all decked out in their best New Beffa gangstah garb.

more obama supporters!

Put me in the 5'5" (165) category, so it's always a concern when fishing alone... at night, etc. (Been trying to fish with Big Fish Larry for protection, but we have had trouble meeting up) :p

Can't run as fast as I used to, especially without dropping and sacrificing my canal gear (yeah, like THAT is going to happen any time soon!). I always carry a razor sharp fillet knife of course, got a permit for pepper spray to boot. And I am not one that feels the least bit squeemish about fighting dirty either, so in the event of a fair 1 on 1 challenge, well, I llike my chances with the helpers above, (unless they're Larry's size, heh-heh), buuuuut still...

The thing about clubs and fillet knives reminds me of what happened to my brother's life long pal/best friend about 13 years ago or so. Same deal, he was about 17 or so, stopping to pick up his girlfriend in front of a 7-11, minding his own business, when 5 punks start in with him. Well he grabbed a baseball bat to protect himself, and as soon as the 5 punks managed to wrestle it away from him, they killed him with it in cold blood.

1 on 1 is one thing, but Joe makes a good point about beating feet as an alternative when the odds are against you.... unless of course you have an enraged Big Fish Larry standing behind you.

Thanks for putting things into perspective Thunder Rod...somethings just aint worth dying for...my pride or fishing stuff included. Granted these punks need to be stopped, but 5 to 1 odds are not gonna be in my favor...and I got alot of living to do.

Carry a can of spray paint and spray it in their eyes and face .......... make it a glow color if you can find some ............ those cowards would run if first they can't see and second if they think they will get caught ............

I mean where is someone with a glowing face going to hide ........ and it will be fun tracking them and watching them try and get that stuff off ...........

BigFish 10-27-2008 02:39 PM

I am always enraged John!:uhuh::realmad: Our timing never seems to jibe John.......having kids will do that to you...am I right?! We will get together I hope.......and hopefully if somebody decides to bother us I can be there for you......at least to distract them so you can get a running start.....cause once my feet start moving you are 4 steps to my one!!:laughs::laughs:

BigFish 10-27-2008 02:44 PM

You know the old saying....."Walk softly and be with a BigFish!":scream:

As with any weapon used in self defense, it goes back to an old adage: If you pull out a weapon, you had better be prepared to use it.

You might think that just brandishing a weapon will be a deterrent, but most street trash follow the theory that "You don't have the guts to do it!"

In a situation where you are out numbered, if you cannot escape (the safest option) make sure that you target the "ringleader" and put him down for good. Unfortunately, you cannot show him the mercy that he wouldn't show you if the roles were reversed.

"Never give a snake a second chance to strike!"

Hopefully those dirtbags will make the mistake of trying the same stunt with someone that can and will make them pay their ultimate price.

If an animal attacks a person, it is usually "put down" because it has proven to be a threat to people. Why can't we treat these "animals" the same way? They've already proven that they're a threat.

LOL! I like the spray paint idea. You can hear it on the police scanner..

"A&B at the Cape Cod Canal...be on the lookout for a young male, 5'7", 135lbs., and uh.. he's flourescent green!"

3 or more dudes show up together, you'll have no problem.

My bad, I thought it had said late night, though the theory still holds true. A 15 year old is well old enough to go fishing by himself in a perfect world. Not in this one, obviously. Especially if you know you're in a sketchy area.
