K. how much for that? I think the Apples are too expensive for what I am going to use it for. Nice units but $$$ is an issue for me. I am looking at Dell.

The Dad Fisherman 12-03-2008 11:34 AM

It was $387.....but it looks like they are all sold out

ProfessorM 12-03-2008 01:32 PM

For me,the preference is in the OS. With OSX,in order to install anything on the root of the computer, your prompted for a username and password. It would be pretty hard to install something malicious unknowingly. Another major difference is that there is no registry with OS X. Therefore no shared dll or ini files. When you want to get rid of a program, drag it to the trash and that's it.You're not prompted about shared dll's etc. There is also no BIOS with a Mac.Startup times are pretty quick. As far as a learning curve,it's kind of like reinventing the wheel. Not that hard really. In regard to cost of software, for most home users Neo Office (Open Office ported to OS X) is more than enough for documents, spreadsheets etc. Thunderbird is a great mail app that I use..Both are open source, free. I also have a Windows box because I like to tweak. Upgrades are a snap with a PC. With a Mac,components are somewhat more proprietary. Tho I did upgrade the RAM and hardrive on my Macbook easily.Costwise, a PC can't be beat. With some of the price points now,PC's are almost becoming disposable. Vista, well that's a whole nuther issue.Tho there are speed tweaks for it,it still can be a major biatch at times..I'm wondering how the next Window's OS will be?
I would sum it up as follows:
If you're a hardcore gamer,stick with PC
If you get processor envy and tweak your computer often, stick with a PC
If you're in a newtorked office that uses Windows, stick with a PC

None of the above,a Mac works..

I'm a hardcore gamer and my pc boots up in real short time.Apps run like lightning and my vid card pushes my 27.5 inch monitor on high with no problems.OS is XP Pro because I tried the vista and couldn't stand it's incompatible with most of the applications I use to keep my XP install clean and sound. Can't play games on a MAC so I don't have or want one. They do look cool and all the important people own them. They are also in all the movies.

I ordered a pretty ballsy Dell for the apartment; Quad core processor, 500GB Hard drive etc etc.. w/ 20" flat panel for 700ish shipped...

Check your place of employment, they might have additional discounts (Prof M; talking to you) Through the Univ affiliation I got an additional 7% off (covers the tax) and free shipping...

I grew up on macs.. I am a professional artist and do my own graphic design and digital photography... long story short, I switched over to PC's..why??? PC's used to be business based and would not work with most graphic design software or at least not as well as macs.... not any more.

The new PC's with quad cores ,high speed memory and newest graphics cards can do just about anything.I was running dual nvidia 8800gtx's with 768mb on each card. They burnt out in under 2 years.Fast is an understatement and I have a dual core AMD processor. Now it's Call of Duty World at War multiplayer until spring.World War II games are the best.:rocketem::gf::buds::rocketem::liquify::gf: :rotf2::cheers2:

Well said. Simple truth is they are (usually) both good rigs and the MAC used to have a graphics edge, no longer does, and is a matter of preference. I do wish Windows engineers were were more consistent with their product.
