wait till these things show up in montauk, those guys don't play! there'll be seal bodies everywhere!

I saw seals last fall in Montauk. I wonder if there are more sharks in those waters to keep the numbers down.

save the blood !

every time you see seals -> throw some their way..

as sharks can smell a drop of blood from 5 kilometers away

which is a little over three miles.. :uhuh:

just look at the amount of seals on the rocks of south africa where all those great white videos are taken. sharks are never going to control the seal population to a level that we as fisherman will be happy with. they, sharks, are not that plentiful and there would be no survival advantage to them to move in and wipe out the population. at most, just enough of them will move in to take advantage of the current population IMO.

montauk is warmer, that's why there are fewer seals there IMO.

Excellent point....

We need a terrible disease to run rampant through the seal population.

i guess we need an environmental wacko season...2 per day, 28 inches, no closed season. the caliber must be .223 or larger. sunday hunting allowed.

Where the f()&k do you think Cod in supermarkets comes from? Your ass?

think about baby cod.. they are little snickers bars floating around the bottom... dogfish love snickers bars.

RIROCKHOUND 01-26-2009 11:12 AM

Absolutely.
There was a Canadian fisheries scientist names 'RAM' Ran Myers who gave a great talk about how Dogfish are a niche predator, and when you remove Cod, they come in, prey on small cod AND out compete them for the limited food supply....

similar to Cormorants and juvenile winter flounder!

Think about the fact that cod end mesh sizes weren't increased until not too long ago.

Doesn't anyone pay any real attention to the fishery?
Or do we just all want to blame something else?

Cod has been collapsing for over 20 years now. What was the 'blame of the week' then? Not dogfish. Or seals.
