Mike, Ross, Matt, and anyone else doing this - sincere good luck. It sucks. I'm 4 weeks down now. I used all kinds of motivation, from my health, to being around for my son and not dying off in my 60s like my father and his father and fathers before that. I also felt that if I was going to fish harder and better to go with getting "wiser" thank I sure as ^$*# better quit that crap!

I basically locked myself in a room for a few days, tried cold turkey, and getting close to losing it I found some old commit lozenges from a previous attempt which took off just enough of the edge. Still want one though!!!

bart 01-03-2009 10:21 PM

i'm trying to quit now. hardest thing i've ever done. i commend you all for your efforts

nightfighter 01-03-2009 10:42 PM

Patch is good.

JohnR 01-03-2009 10:46 PM

Do it now while you have the excuse of being young and dumb. You're supposed to know better when you're older. And short of never starting, nothing better you can do than quitting when you are young... Wish I had

cheferson 01-03-2009 11:05 PM

Good luck guys. Ive quit a couple times, once for 5 years. Ive been chokey free for a bit under a year now. This past time i quit by smoking exsctasy cigs( no nicotine) for 3 weeks . Good luck and start working out more now so you dont pack on weight.

Raven 01-04-2009 06:19 AM

i have to say

this...

think about nicotine ..the drug itself that is so addictive...

it was the only insecticide that successfully eliminated
the cotton boweavil (sp) an insect that even DDT wouldn't phase or any other insecticide for that matter.

that being said... on to health...aspects

when your on the drug nicotine it puts your immune system on full alert status or at level defcon 4 ..ok

in order to fight off it's strength... then when your body no longer has it in the system... the body is confused ...because it wants to go down scale to defcon 1 status
but it is hesitant to do so...

be aware,
that you may now require more vitamin C
or other vitamins (ie better nutrition) to keep cold viruses at bay since your immune system is no longer running at full throttle.

Good luck everyone

jeffthechef 01-05-2009 08:35 AM

good luck! give it your best shot. i've been smoke free for a couple of years. the toughest ones to put down were when i was tippin' or fishin'. it got easier every day. don't get discouraged and think about the payoff....more years to fish!

thefishingfreak 01-05-2009 05:13 PM

Made it thru work no problems. Couple cravings here and there. I feel really good this time. not constantly trying to convince myself to "just have one", Romancing that one cigarette. I'll have one like a reward because I've been good..... Not this time. those thoughts are gone.
I feel better allready I can take these HUGE deep breaths that would surely cause a coughing fit only a week ago.
Chewed so much gum today my jaw and head hurts though..
Day 5

saltfly 01-05-2009 05:46 PM

KEEP GOING YOU ALL CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

tattoobob 01-05-2009 06:03 PM

Good luck guys, I'm not quitting yet maybe after I go thru these 2 cartons I have in my truck I will. I am an off and on smoker, when I feel like stopping I just stop then a few years later I have one and bam I'm on them again.

Mike,
To give more incentive , this season I'm going to be enforcing the NO SMOKING RULE On my boat !

Tagger 01-05-2009 06:49 PM

Good Going Mike ,,, Those cravings only last a few seconds but they're maddning .. They get further and further apart until you don't get them anymore, but its tough .. especially if other life problems arise .. When you get the feeling rub your fore finger and your thumb together and picture those 2 resin sacks (lungs)you have getting pinker..

nightfighter 01-05-2009 08:28 PM

Thank god for the patch. It was weird in the van today though, kept reaching to light up unconsciously....oh yeah, I'm quitting that. Let the head games begin.........

Bocephus 01-06-2009 10:24 AM

Im 35 and have had a pack a day habit since I was 16. Heading to the hypnotist again next week, I tried it 2 yrs ago and it worked great, no side effects, no freakouts, but 6 months later I had a few more beers than usual, and started back up. I very rarely drink now and when I do I only have 3 or 4 tops, so Im hopeful this will be it. Ive had 3 other friends do the hypnosis thing and they are still smoke free, several years later.

Bronko 01-06-2009 11:50 AM

Been off them 3 full years this past New Years. I was about 1/2 - 1 pack a day smoker from age 21 to 35. NYE 2005/2006 I had really bad Bronchitis and couldn't have smoked if I wanted to, the bronchitis lasted a week. I had been thinking about quitting so this gave me the opportunity, I made it my resolution. It was really hard, but being sick really helped. It gave me that 7-10 period that most people struggle with. I stuck with it and had some serious urges, but I was able to battle through them. 3 full years later (and 25 lbs of added weight) I really do feel much better. I would lend my support to those trying, stick with it! If I can do it, anyone can.

Good Luck!

thefishingfreak 01-06-2009 08:52 PM

going strong. Can't sleep and nightmares from the wellbutrin. I been thru worse
The cravings aren't bad.

luds 01-06-2009 09:31 PM

Good luck guys. We're all pulling for ya!

jimmy z 01-07-2009 05:45 AM

I'm giving it a shot as well. I did ok, stopped for over a year and a half, but went back a year ago. I'm tired of it.
But what I'm doing as well, at the same time, is watching my food intake, and I'm exercising as well.
A day at a time. I'm just sick of 'em, again.

thefishingfreak 01-07-2009 08:38 PM

Day 7... Thats 1 week.
Haven't touched them. Haven't slept the past two nights either but I haven't smoked. Thats the important part.
hope the rest of you are still at it. :musc:

Tagger 01-07-2009 08:44 PM

Congrats Mike ,, keep your chin up .. keep swinging .

Slingah 01-07-2009 08:46 PM

I crumbled...keep up the great work FF....

Starfish 01-07-2009 08:51 PM

Helping my good friend at work do it cold turkey. Its hard to watch, she walks to the door like shes gonna smoke even with no cigarettes. The certain triggers in your daily routines must be so difficult. I convinced her to join my gym so she can get into shape and not gain the weight from quitting and then regret her awesome decision to rid herself of that nasty habit.

Good Luck to all of you!
