I'm sure he's going to be held accountable for his actions (as he should) but this isn't the person to make an example of. A bullet Buck? The kid is 16 and has probably seen little more than poverty and violence his entire life. These kids are pawns, they need to go after the big fish...

I think what you wrote Spence could be taken as excuse making. IMO

I clearly stated I thought he would be held accountable and that I agreed that he should. That isn't excuse making.

Pointing out that Somalia is a %$%$%$%$hole, and that he's a product of perhaps the most broken country on the planet isn't making excuses, it's reality.

It seems as though many people simply can't comprehend an alternate point of view. For instance, to try to understand the rage that drives a Palestinian teenager to strap a bomb to themselves.

To do so doesn't mean you're attempting to justify or legitimize their actions, and perhaps more importantly, with a broader understanding one can prescribe better solutions.

As Sun Tzu said:

Quote:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not your enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

That was covered under the "he's a product of the most broken country on the planet" statement.

The fact of the matter is that this kid probably doesn't know any better. There was good article in GQ last month on the issue. The pirates are bringing a lot of money into the communities and providing food and support that the people can't get any other way.

They are seen as modern day Robin Hood's.

That doesn't mean his actions are justified at all. It does mean that making an example of him will do nothing to help the situation. Only addressing the root causes, a terribly weak Somali government and the pirate leadership who's directing the pawns will ever improve the situation.

No, I'm talking about the kingpins. The guys building the gigantic mansions on the Somali coast. I doubt they're doing the dirty work.

I thought we were the most broken country on the planet...aren't the dems constantly telling us that every aspect of America is broken and "in crisis"

The fact of the matter is that this kid probably doesn't know any better. There was good article in GQ last month on the issue. The pirates are bringing a lot of money into the communities and providing food and support that the people can't get any other way(like Obama).

You should be his lawyer Spence Alynski..."he didn't know any better"..poor baby...I knew you were a GQ metrosexual...but judging by your photo...you really need a haircut...

They are seen as modern day Robin Hood's. so is Obama..does that make him a pirate too? will he be bare chested with a parrot on his shoulder on the next cover of TIME?...

That doesn't mean his actions are justified at all. It does mean that making an example of him will do nothing to help the situation. Only addressing the root causes(CALL THE UN), a terribly weak Somali government and the pirate leadership who's directing the pawns will ever improve the situation.

yeah...punishment doesn't ever work... what we need to do is put the entire country of Somalia on welfare courtesy of America, I mean...we're loaded...or...we could just print more money...and that will solve everything....or ban the use of the word pirate all together...that's another approach.....

LET OUR PIRATE GO !!!!!....HE'S A HARMLESS TWIT...YOU MUST ACQUIT!

Now that is sweet. I want one.

Someone could make a fortune on that hat. I'd probably buy at least one.

 I've been noticing the "good side" coming out more and more lately with some of the things that have been going on in this wonderful state of ours.

When are we going fishing?
