Grapenuts has a good point
but i doubt they would do that while driving
|
You guys are grumpy old farts! Texting DOES have a time and place (and no its not while driving) but it does offer a way to send a quick message. For example I can text my husband "will be late tonite" instead of calling him and having to have a whole conversation about it while we are trying to work or whatever. I send the message when I have a minute and he reads it when he has a minute.

this is funny stuff :as:
I'm on the other side of the fence, all I do is text/email. All I ever do on the phone is say ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT just trying to get off the damn thing. just send a text and I will reply when I can and if not I'll see what you want. TAAADDAAA You guys will soon be texters! Just like the people who said they wouldn't ever get a cell phone! |

I use my cell phone as if it cost $10 per call. Why?
Because I'd rather wait and tell the person in person and REALLY enjoy the conversation. Think about it, if we all use our cell phones for every little bit of useless information exchanges, what do we have left to talk about when we meet face to face? Or when we get home? Doesn't anyone enjoy when you get home and you are asked: "How was your day?" Cell phones were a good invention up until they made them into portable PC/radio/MP3's. Then they turned into just another "idiot box" (as my parents used to call the TV.) |

Went to the movies the other night and every few minutes somebody would open up there cell to start texting someone....that too is pretty annoying as it is a distraction in a dark theatre.
Can't people just "shut up" for a couple of hours..... People are always complaining about Big Brother watching.....yet they have no problem texting everybody what they're doing, putting their entire life on Facebook/Myspace, and Tweeting their current whereabouts and status..... |
These kids nowadays are amazing. There is no way I can text while driving, my fingers are too big, my eyesight is going, my hearing is going and my mind is gone. They are awesome !!!!!
That said YES I too am guilty,,but I can only do it while sitting in traffic, because I need to switch glasses.....so the worst could happen is I dent someones license plate (slightly)....I also have hands free bluetooth built into the stereo DVD player I installed so phone calls are hands free. Which also allows me to watch the 3 stooges on my way to work. I shoulda been a green line operator...... Honestly though its just another distraction. There are so many, whats the difference, I've seen people reading the paper, putting on makeup, reading a novel, doing crossword puzzles, working on a laptop, even YES,,,,BELIEVE IT OR NOT "eating a bowl of cereal" (with milk) while driving. Now thats multitasking. Is texting while driving stupid? YES, is talking on the phone while driving stupid? YES, are there laws? YES...Will it stop anyone NO.....Deal with it, don't fight it, invent technology to make it easier, like voice activated texting LOL.. You make MILLIONS.......You old GRUMP....... The best thing we ever did was give the kids phones. We waited until they were old enough, but we could always find out where they were, when they needed to get picked up, what time and who with. Don't forget as the parent/owner of the phone account you can always block all incoming/outgoing texting, or limit the number of texts, block phone numbers etc.... |
IMO, it comes down to paying attention. Especially when you drive. Have I texted when driving: yes. While I'm moving: no. Only at red lights and when stuck in traffic. And it's not just drivers who need to pay attention. Recently in Warwick a 15 year-old student was run over by a school bus and killed on her way to school. She crossed the street right near the school without looking. What was she doing? Listening to her I-pod and texting her friends.

What is TEXTING?
Where did I put that cell phone anyway? I thought I had one. I don't even answer the damn thing when I am driving, nevermind text anyone. It is the stupidest invention yet. Here is a good example... My niece texted (is that a word?) me to come pick her up at school. 2 hours later I hear a little beep coming from my pocketbook that I left out on the deck. I fly out the door and get her and she is all ticked off. "Why are you so late?" Well duh, why didn't you just call the house phone? |

None of my neices or nephews have cell phones. Only a couple have Ipods. Isn't amazing with all the resources available to these industry giants that ALL their advances are wasted on technology that is GUARANTEED to be obsolete? They put out new phones every year, and these POS are just glorified idiot boxes. As for texting while driving, there are plenty of other things that you COULD do while driving that don't take but a second to do, like say juggling, butter toast, clip your fingernails, tie your shoes, count your change.... if you tried doing ANY of these while driving you would crash! Why would texting be any different? I would like to know what caused that cape cod girl to cross over Rte 6 in Brewster and collide with the minivan (today's news). Unless she had an underlying health issue, I'd guess maybe cellphone, texting or some other distraction. |
and if you can't get ahold of me
stop next to a hollow log
and beat on it with a couple of sticks i'm sure i'll hear it eventually |
:biglaugh: I am sorry but kids do not need cell phones.
This kid is as good as they come and she is pretty responsible but she is a kid. First time-phone lost. Left it on the bumper of the four wheeler trailer. Well I guess that's that then huh? Nope "it's only $60 for a new one." I don't think so."When are you getting a job?" Second time left out in the pouring rain. I guess that's it for your phone now. "It wasn't my fault, I gave it to somebody else to hold" I am sure there are millions of stories like this from other kids families. My God how did us OLD FARTS survive as children? Raven I have been hitting that hollow log all day and you still haven't called. |
Texting is another form of communication these days, but it is stupid to do while driving. Most people do text these days.
|
The worst thing about all of this is that our government has to waste time making laws to make texting while driving illegal.
The American people are too dense to figure out that it is dangerous on their own. Here's your sign. |

I don't get it either. |

If nothing more, texting is just another way of "dumbing" yourself down. Although most adults could care less about texting, it's made to look like it's a great innovation created by geniuses, when in fact it's just another wasted enhancement for someone to use their cellphones for. Wait, they're not cellphones anymore, their combination phone, Ipod, MP3, laptop AND intelligence remover! |

ya know guys......
one could argue all we do on this site is just "text" each other :hidin: |
