Don't get hung up on the North Rip as the premier Block Island surf spot - it's not. People tend to equate danger with great fishing - it's often true, but not so much with this spot.
|
If you stop in Twin Maples notice the newspaper article on the wall with the guy holding a bluefish. He lost his life at the north rip.

So DaveS will now go the his physician and tell him he can't get block island out of his head. The physician might have a birthmark/mole on his face and Dave will tell him it's shaped like a pork chop. The doc will then tell Dave that he has contracted Block Island Fever and there is no known cure. The only thing Dave can do to ease the symptoms is take repeated trips to the island.
Welcome to the club. DZ |
Or he can marry a woman who has a house there. Oh wait, that is what I did.:)

You got that right lol, I was dying watching you guys pl#^^^^^&g bigger fish out over in that honeyhole :), but I made a move and found some smaller 15-24# fish, actually a lot not some lol. Thanks to all who tuned me up with the info for my trip, the tips were put to good use. Well I gotta admit that is the most awesome place I have ever fished along the east coast, Cutty does'nt even come close. We went over on the Thursday 8 AM ferry, and once we landed, we went scouting around the island and we were amazed by the amount of places to fish, there is no way to even describe the fishiness of these spots, and 3 nights there aint enough to do em all. Thursday night we set out about 8:30 PM, walked down to Barlows and I hooked up first cast on a custom Parrot needle with a fish about 15#, what happened for the next 2 hours is a blur, I actually got tired of catching bass every cast and had to sit down for a smoke and a snack just to recover a bit (mind you we have'nt slept since I woke up wednesday AM, I was whooped). My 2 partners kept fishing and finally i rejoined em, kept catching fish for another hour or so then we left em to fish another spot. Went over by the poop chute and hammered fish till daybreak. The fish over there were all different sizes, some were 10# some were high teens low 20's, you could do no wrong. Finally get to our room around 7 AM on Friday AM, slept till dark, went out again this time over to Dories, beat em up over there real good, back to barlows, more fish, over to the chute, more fish, rinse and repeat. Place is on fire. I could go on and on about numbers but I wont, you get the idea. Friday night, we bumped into several guys who really got into nicer fish with the aid of wetsuits. One of my group joined em out on some distant rocks and did really well on fish into the low 30's, oh well, I'll get out there next time, wetsuit is on my list of items to buy right now. All in all we had a great time, caught lotsa fish and made a few memories. If you never been there you have no idea what you're missing, go now. |

Glad you had great fishing. The Block can be a true fishing bonanza or..... It's not always like that. 2003 Early November. The Island looked like it was going to sink into the sea from the number of striper men out there. Here's a partial list: Sea Dangles, Habs, myself, RI Rockhound, Spence, Redlite, Tony Orlando, #^^^^^^&, Steve McKenna, DZ and on and on. How many fish were caught??? #^^^^^^& got one about 20# and Steve Van Staal got one about 15#. That's all. Mike V (redlite) never went back. DZ did better as he stayed for a week and found fish after we left on Sunday. Don't get me wrong, we had a blast. But the fishing sucked. I have been there when we killed big fish 81, 82. When we did just OK 96, 97. Great 99, 2000. I think it was 2002 RI Rockhound, Spence and I fished the Friday after Thanksgiving for about 20 of 24 hours with a howling SW wind and 30 degree temps for 2 15# fish. We were parked on the bluff overlooking the SW Point (you could still drive there.) and the wind was shaking the truck. You hit it just right and were lucky there were fish everywhere. Let Dennis tell you stories about sleepless nights with nothing to show for it. Thank the Gods for your good fortune.:buds: |
Paul you couldn't have said it better, Dave I am glad you had a great trip

The Block Island fall paradox is that it's not very easy to hit it right, and it's very easy to have a trip that is so piss poor that you'll never want to go back. Block Island fishing is fickle business.
You have to go when conditions are favorable, and as the season progresses, those opportunities become less frequent. But when wind and bait and weather come around, it's heaven. The fish are on their own schedule and it usually does not correspond to when it's convenient for fishermen. |
