creativity is up to the builder
however it is done is up to you
a needle with a small blade in back qualifies I guess since it would have a flaptail.
They can use colorado blades or real flaptail blades, doesn't matter. there are no hard set rules

Dad 818 12-08-2009 05:19 PM

Bruce, where can I get flaptail blades? I have seen colorado blades, but none of those used on flaptails?

Slipknot 12-08-2009 06:00 PM

I thought moores sold them
I think salty has them too

ProfessorM 12-08-2009 08:26 PM

yes, sold by both places

Slipknot 01-25-2010 06:56 PM

We need to nail down how the ballots for voting will look.
what are the final categories?

Slipknot 02-01-2010 04:23 PM

Can someone write out the ballots here on a post? and I can print a bunch up before the fest.

I have enough to do and would like the ballots to be reasonable and what everyone wants.

Anyone? take a stab at it please

best overall

best rookie

So is this what we came up with for ballots?

if so, that is what we'll do unless you want further discusion

angler229 02-01-2010 06:04 PM

What about best representation of a classic, or is that just going to be the flaptails?

Slipknot 02-01-2010 06:38 PM

Thank you Dan, I'll add that one too

Slipknot 02-01-2010 06:51 PM

OK, just to be clear, is it the case that contest plugs will be mostly Flaptail plugs? Are some people bringing contest plugs other than Flaptails? I thought so  Are they all being judged all at once? I'm so confused
someone straighten me out please.

I was going to make a flaptail and also a contest plug(not a flaptail plug) if that makes any sense.

One table will have contest plugs to be voted on by everyone, another table will display all the flaptail plugs(hopefully most of them will be donated to the raffle, I understand if some do not) , now this brings my dilema, do we have 2 separate votings/ballots? or just add a category at bottom of the regular ballot?

can you see how I'm confused:confused:

angler229 02-01-2010 07:02 PM

I know in years past allot of people built 2 plugs for contests. One for overall and another geared at a specific category. So I think that should still be an option for people.

So here is what I'm thinking we have 5 categories...
Best of Show
Best Representation of a Classic
Best Rookie/Novice Builder
Best Novelty Plug
Best Flaptail Plug

So in the end we have one ballot with the 5 categories. Everyone that enters a plug should include a notecard with the categories (all plugs are automatically considered for Best of Show) that they want the plug entered. Then as the plugs are displayed for voting they can be arranged by category.

Perfect
yes, please include the card with your entries.
Dan seems to have the jist of this contest thing :btu:

  • Document better within some classes of the competition. Maybe next year we have a "form" that people fill out on the classics, better explaining the job and intent. I noticed this was lacking when I was getting handed paper bag after paper bag.
Plugfest has always been about this great plug building community of people in the northeast (and beyond). Lets keep it what it is, a community event, and not over complicate it.

OK,

1. bigger place - CHECK

2. plan better, I have been working on it and thought I got started on it plenty early. I will need others help on the day of also.

3. We should do some sort of PDF on a thread where everyone will be required to print it out and include it with their entry/entries.sounds like a plan to me.
put it in your paper bag with your plug.

Who is going to organize this? volunteers? step right up one of you plug building computer expert geeks, because if it's left up to me, it won't happen unless my daughter helps me:smash::wall:

HELP! please:soon:

I can try to make up some signs for the tables so guys know where to go with what plugs for what contest. that may make it less confusing.

THANK YOU

angler229 02-01-2010 10:46 PM

I'm not a computer geek but I'll do my best to help out. From my perspective we only need something to explain plugs in the Representation of a Classic category unless the builder feels the need to give people extra information about their plug. So I'm thinking on this form, Original Creators Name, a picture of the original, and any other information deemed noteworthy about the reproduction. If that sounds good I can make up a sample for people to follow.

angler229 02-01-2010 10:52 PM

Also I don't think a form is totally essential with entry but it is nice to have an understanding of where the plug came from.

I think the part about John being handed paper bag after paper bag, is why something besides your name needs to go with the plug.

And as far as voting purposes, last year we had no idea which plugs were in the classic category.

That is a start Dan, Thanks

Grapenuts 02-02-2010 12:32 PM

Classic plugs are great, but last year Prof.s bass-aqua should have won hands down, as I saw nothing else that came close..in there lies the problem...if your not a classic collector and don't know the history behind the many that are out there...the adj. joe shouldn't be voting in that catogory...I over heard a few say...whats that thing? and his fishmaster got nothing but head scratching from the crowd.

agreed. I don't know jack squat about older plugs (and very little about newer ones). I would not feel comfortable voting in that category.

yep

ok a solution?

I am trying to atleast get it so the plugs are placed on the table in appropriate categories = novice/classic/general/flaptail

I am not the one who began this contest at plugfests and have had very little help since, a few have helped in the past like Bigfish, canalman,TTimber, Frank and JohnR etc. So if you can organize a separate ballot for the classics and a panel of judges Steve, then I can't see a solution to your observation. Ask the guys that are knowledgable in that area who will be attending if they can be judges or something. My plate seems to always be overflowing at this event. If that is what can be done to make it more fun and enjoyable for all than I am all for it.
Thanks

angler229 02-02-2010 03:34 PM

Another option would be to just put a note on the ballot that if you are not familiar with classic plugs don't vote for this category.

I can give a hand if needed. its the least that I can do.

PDFs, Signs for the table..whatever.

Grapenuts 02-02-2010 05:45 PM

who else is a classic plug collector here on sb other then VB an CS an perhaps the prof.??..there must be a closet collector or two hiding in the wings that go to the fest...yes-no?....if not that leaves only those two/three to decide the fate of the best classic repro....are they willing? /CS says :uhuh:he'll do it...I'll pm the other two an see what their thoughts are....stay tuned.

maybe george would care to be included too.

angler229 02-02-2010 06:24 PM

I collect just no where near the level of the VB and CS, but have done my research on the vintage stuff.

eastendlu 02-02-2010 08:00 PM

I like the idea of judges for the classic category and CS,VB,Numby are some of the most knowledgeable guys around.Bruce give me a call and i will see if i can help out with ballots or whatever as i am not an expert on the pc but i work next to one and have access to printer and such.

Dad 818 02-02-2010 08:14 PM

Bruce, just another idea.

If you are still planning on having seperate tables for each category, what if you had single category ballots on each corresponding table?

It may make it a little easier for voters this way. And that way they vote on the categories they are familiar with.

5 tables, 5 ballots, 5 boxes. Or split each table, one category per half. This way you have more room for builders to display.

Just an idea to try to help limit the confusion.

Grapenuts 02-02-2010 08:53 PM

ok....george...peter an steve are on board as judges....prof. is working..so we gotta wait till after daylite to hear from him.Figure any plug that get atleast two or better votes gets a wet kiss from VB.In case of a tie, the two top plugs will get voted on again.

How's this for an entry form for the classic plugs.

Grapenuts 02-03-2010 06:48 AM

You'd have those at the fest for folks to fill out when they come in with their baits?
