i am a big fan of surfcasting, but i love boatfishing just as much so it's a tuff call.....

I have found it very hard to walk to Cuttyhunk and then just as hard to fish the shore once there so give me my boat to fish the surf. And Goose you bought a boat so you could fish surf 3-4 times a week???????:smash: :smash: Fish the beach from the boat young man and catch ALL those easy to get big cows. You don't even need a rod just a net to scoop them up. Boat fishing the surf best of both worlds. Right CLAMMER:D :D :D :D :D

Don't forget, if the fish ain't bittin', you can always cruise around the marinas and check out the bikini's laying around on the bows of their cruisers !!!!:D :D :cool: ;)

I don,t think that its often that my boat is more than a cast from shore, but I make it a point of NEVER messing up a shorefisherman even if it means leaving the fish/////////////////

There ain't noway I'm takin out the boat 2-3 times week.......workin long hours rushin home to get on the water is just asking for it(horra show). I'ld much rather grab my gear and cool off in the suds. Remember??;) Over the winter I wrapped myself 3 boat rods and three surf (three witch where rewraped)...no rods over 8' on my boat. Although I've owned a couple other boats this boat will defiantly take me to new waters. With electronics and knowlegde(things I'm yet to obtain:)) boaters can get to waters surfcasters can only dream of. I love being out there waste deep in the darkness wondering whats swimming around me....after a moment or two that gittery feeling goes away and its just me, eels and GOD.


BTW.....boating doesn't end at the ramp but two hours later.

Last season did diddly from the surf but had the best day of my life with 6 fish over 30 LBS. from the boat, but I'm still a Surf Ratt and would take one of those 30+ any day from the suds than the 6 from the boat.

Well Goose if you need any help with the err electronics and stuff, you just give me a call, maybe I can free up a day to ride along :).

There is just something about fishing late night...and when your done, hop'in in the jeep and heading home.....rather that calling it quits 30-40 mins. before so you can head in!

Nothing like the late night sounds of the water...bait splashing...no motors!

One in the Suds is better than ten in the Blue.

Surf = Able to fish in ANY type of condition. NO MATTER WHAT!!!

Boat = Able to fish when the weather allows it.


.....hmmmm. I'm thinking extreme here....so let's me think about this. If I was given the choice of ONLY choosing one -

A: Surf - Be able to fish whenever I want, but never from a boat

or

B: Boat - Only fishing when the weather permitted...

If I had to choose only 1........I would go with A

I like boat fishing but I feel like I have more room to relax and fish when I am on shore (because I am SOO graceful and its usually not until the end of the day when I finally find my sea legs...:rolleyes: :D ).....well in a way I guess I kind of consider the sand sled to be my boat!!!!:D

this older gentleman I know does a lot of freshwater fishing...always from his boat....so anyway he spots me fishing (from shore) one morning (he sometimes goes to the boat laucnch with his coffe and donut to "check things out") so he asks..."you really get anything here???" I say yeah.....next week he brings his rod on his coffee run and lands a 6.5 pound bass!!! the biggest hes ever pulled out of that place!!!!

....and from shore!!!! he cant stop telling me that story!!!:D and thats ok...because he tells it with so much enthusiasm!!!!

I agree with Goose, not many days that I can ever remember that I couldn,t get to fish in my boat,but I know there were days that the surf was out of the question//////////////

Goose is right size matters and if I find you in my spot Goose I am bigger than you and will just push you aside so I can fish the honey hole:eek: :eek: :eek: :laughs: :laughs: Now I am going out side to start the Yamaha and let her run for a few minutes just to get the feel of being out there.:smash: :smash: :smash:

Does that boat have to have a motor? I may not be able to get to the islands but I can get into some neat estuaries w/ my kayak and I can pull up on shore and surf cast. Besides I'm cheap, no gas, no reg. no taxesssss, little upkeep and all the fresh air you can handle.

..and on those days that a boat would have to fish those protected waters....don't you think a surf-fisher could fish the UN-protected waters???

and as far as the surf ever being out of the question.....only days I know of....are RED-TIDE days - :smash: :af: :af:

I love fishing the Surf and probably spend about 90% of the time of the surf and maybe 10% off the boat. I find that off the boat is much easier, especially if you have good electronics and are knowledgable. Not everyone that owns a boat knows what they are doing, especially those that fish entirely during the day chasing birds and running through schools of fish feeding on the surface. How about those boaters that follow the charter captains and cast into them. Most of the challenge is being able to find you're own fish. Another thing I take into consideration is, IT is much easier to land a big fish when you are reeling straight up from 8-60ft or so towards the boat. Now I am not saying that everyone that fishes the surf know what they are doing either, they dont. It is much more difficult to land a fish off the surf than it is off of a boat, without a doubt, to me it is much greater of a challenge. You have to remember that off the surf you cannot rely on good electronics that can tell you that you are on top of a school of big fish either.

I should have said that the surf was unfishable too me, which means that its fishabe to others//

But the same goes for boats/ I<ll fish where & when others won,t & v/v
Bottom line to me is now I fish to enjoy it ,compared to money fishing ,which is a completely differant game///

Boaters have a much greater advantage of having the resources for catching more and bigger fish. However if you are fishing off the Surf doesn't mean you still can't catch alot of nice Bass. For 2002 I ended up with 16 Striped Bass ranging from 30lbs -39.5lbs and 94 Striped Bass ranging from 20lbs-29.5lbs. This was strictly in Rhody and Mass from June through November....I am not even counting locally when I was fishing in my neck of the woods in April and a small bit of May...I missed almost the whole month of May.

I do a fair amount of both boat and surf fishing, and I feel both have their advantage and place. During July and August when the picking off the beach is spotty at best, it's great to be able to get to the deeper water in search of cows. In this case boat fishing is FAR more enjoyable than surfcasting. However, in May and October when cows can be at your feet on the beach, surfcasting is FAR more enjoyable than the boat. Now, if you combine the two....

Also, I feel that there are two types of boat fisherman: those that cast plugs and fish pole in hand, and those that troll. Now, I'm aware of the productive value of the tube-n-worm, but that's just a boat ride to me. I would put the boat fisherman that have pole in hand on par with surf guys, but the troller is a wholly different beast.
