SSA one way fare for a 40 minute ride, vehicle only--$67.50. Add $7.50 one-way for the driver. $75 total fare, one way.

Orient Point/New London ferry one way fare for vehicle and driver, for an hour and a half ride--$49.50.

And the SSA is a publicly-subsidized carrier.

Still, cheap compared to Nantucket...IF you can even find room for your car on the boat!

Congrats Paul......Way to go....

GattaFish 10-17-2010 06:22 PM

Congrats Paul,,,,,

If I'm not mistaken, SB members have 3 of the last 4 shore bass titles :btu:

tattoobob 10-17-2010 06:44 PM

Block Island ferry is 96.50 and 23.50 round trip
that's a lot for a 45 minute ride

westhavendave 10-17-2010 07:26 PM

Congrats Paul, you put in your time and it is well deserved. Block is a bargain compared to the Mass. Islands. I went to Nantucket in the nineties and the reason the ferry is so expensive is to discourage tourists from bringing their cars

wader-dad 10-17-2010 07:46 PM

Paul S. Derby winner. Tell your grandchildren. and their children.

Slipknot 10-17-2010 08:15 PM

Congratulations Paul on your win :btu:
that's quite an accomplishment on your resume:uhuh:

Nice work Paul.....Congrats.

Offshore24 10-18-2010 07:47 AM

I met Paul last season and we worked hard one night with little to show for it. Cudo's Paul for going back and bringing home the bacon. That's a great win!

Saltheart 10-18-2010 07:56 AM

Congrats on the big win Paul! That is quite an accomplishment since its a big derby with lots of people over a long period. Takes a good fish to win it and an especially big effort by the fisherman in that tough weather this year. Best of luck with the boat.

PaulS 10-18-2010 08:41 AM

First, thanks for all the kind words and bests wishes. The money will be spent and the plugs lost but those (and the other memories) are what I’ll have in the end – and they are most important (although a boat might have changed my mind)!:rotf2:

We had a fun time. I never expected to win largest shore bass so I didn’t think I’d win the boat. So when I didn’t win the boat, I wasn’t disappointed. I got $520, a coffee maker, a vineyard vines jacket, a framed numbered print, a plaque with a small bass done by Janet Messiano on it, a Penn 10’ rod, Penn slammer reel and a bag of plugs/tins, bottle of wine and other stuff. They also gave out a Derby button with the number 1 on it. I thought I’d get a yellow rod, but they were all given out to the kids:fishin:.

At first I thought the print was just ok but the more I looked at it the more I like it. The frame is pretty nice also. My wife looked the artist up on line and said the prints were like $750. My print is #2 of 150. I got my pin for the daily prize. I was telling my wife that I usually am happy with a pin and that this was my third. Just then one of the young girls walked by and my wife said “maybe you can ask her for one of her 15 pins on her hat”. :smash:

It was pretty neat when people realized I had largest shore bass. Everyone around me was congratulating me. After I didn’t win the boat, I was old news and no one cared.

We decided to save the $150 for the ferry and took a cab. To the event was $23 and the return was $15 (w/o tip). With 2 people carrying everything back, it wasn’t bad. It would have been tough for one person.

As Ross said, my name will always be in the program and I think that’s pretty cool. :)

Thanks again,
Paul

Great job PaulS. You should be proud. You are now part of an elite group. The Derby is a serious tournament with some of the biggest name in the sport out there. You bested them all. Congrats.:)

RIJIMMY 10-18-2010 09:17 AM

congrats Paul. As said previosuly, thats a huge accomplishment. If nothing else, you're more to me now that just a liberal weenie. You're truly a class act.

DRUMCORPFAN 10-18-2010 09:19 AM

Awesome!:claps: Good luck with that key today. Think of something to say in case you win (and also to the guys from the Gazette and the MV Times.):laugha: The painting is pretty cool too. The cab is a pain in the arse; you have to lug all that stuff with you in the cab, on the boat, then in the shuttle bus to the parking lot... just sayin... Congrats!

I am still on the road but have been following the board via Droid. It was a tough year and you posted a quality fish. That makes you the champ for 2010Well done!!!!

PS...Boat or no boat, Truck or no Truck...the person with the largest shore striper is the Derby Champion.

Even worse, I tried to get in as many pictures as possible but somehow they either photoshoped me out or deliberately picked ones I wasn't in.
