The nice thing is the spots I fish never have people.

Yes Big Jay that does make me feel better! I miss that truck until I'm putting gas in the Mazda.

I'm still gonna fish. I live for days on end for very few dollars. I pack food and drinks and I just fish and sleep. I Try to fish every weekend, I pack my food and move with the fish camping along the way. Look at it this way..... a few rods, my waders, top, plugs and gear + fly rods. Thats 3 or 4 grand Im not gonna let collect dust.
Some cold cuts, a box of cereal, gallon of milk some pb+jelly in the big cooler with some treats in the back of the jeep and I'm good for a couple of days. I do get quite a few coffees. Maybey i should put a coffee maker in the jeep. Half the fun is my drive and the sandy parking lot sandwiches.

If you start seeing smart cars with cooler racks it is time to find a different hobby.

I figure that ill get a couple a bucks in scrap for the dodge anchors and throw in a set of B series cummins that I have from a takeout. I was being sarcastic about running the 440's. I ran a single 454 in a light boat for 1 season, never again. And yes but ya can't beat it for 3K

I am finally doing it this year for the first time ever. Gas surcharges for my customers. They will be the ones paying for my fishing trips. Perks of owning a business lol

MarkB 04-26-2011 10:45 PM

The hour drives to the canal will be mostly a thing of the past. I'll be hitting Quincy, Dorchester and Southie this year. I may not catch large like at the canal, but I'll catch and I'll be fishin.'

robc22 04-26-2011 11:43 PM

Everyone should save money and give up that long drive to the ditch......:uhuh::uhuh::grins::grins:

Haus 04-27-2011 12:13 AM

I'm not going to change a thing, accept I will try to spend less in other areas of my life. Maybe take the wife's car instead of my truck. I'll figure it out. But like others have said, fishing is too important for me to miss out.
Good luck to all this season!

I think this might have already been suggested by someone in the past, but I plan on letting my family starve.

Could just be the solution for the childhood/adult obesity that is plaguing our country!!!:uhuh:

Rmarsh 04-27-2011 05:39 AM

Gas prices won't affect my fishing at all. Company I work for pays for all of it. On average, three nights a week, no questions asked.
Best group of people I have ever worked for.

Typhoon 04-27-2011 06:34 AM

I wont be making runs to Wildcat chasing tuna fish. Then decide to head to Southeast corner then the golf balls in Truro, then hit the South East Corner, then the Race, then Southwest corner, then back to the barn in Green Harbor.

A lot more days spent bass fishing at the race. Sorry Jay :D

yowzer....
makes 21gph on the blackfin look like a dream. Makes Mr. Sandy's boat look even nicer....

from the surf: won't change much. I'm too lazy to drive to westerly or the canal anyway.

on the edge... looks like we need to work smarter for tuna and mahi....

Diggin Jiggin 04-27-2011 07:13 AM

My gas bills go up about 50% once I start fishing, this year it will just be a little more $$$. Maybe it will make it so the eels/tackle $$$ doesn't jump out so much on the visa bill.

Rockfish9 04-27-2011 07:13 AM

For me, it wont change alot, the only thing might be the "iffy" nights.. those nights when there is a "chance" of T storms , when I normaly would drive down any way... and if it happens, turn around and go home, or those nights when the wind is the "wrong" quardrent or blowing a little stiffer than I want... I may be more inclined to stay home than drive 30 minutes to the boat.... I'll probably watch the fuel consumption a little closer ( I have a GPH gauge on my Garmin GPS)... I used it a little last fall, while running the beach, and found that i could squeeze a few more miles out of a tank by keeping the fuel flow @ 6-8 GPH ( 115 merc on a 18' center console) which, if memmory serves me was about 22knots...other than that... it's "buisness as usual"

The Dad Fisherman 04-27-2011 08:00 AM

Just keep it more local...

probably will put a damper on YakRat Scrambles for me......will make a couple

Same deal w/ trips to the canal....

Typhoon 04-27-2011 08:59 AM

You'll also see more people getting commercial striped bass licenses to supplement their trips.

piemma 04-27-2011 09:48 AM

I have a Suzuki SX4 I bought my wife that she hates. Says it's too small so I now have it. 32 to 35 MPG. It's gonna look stupid with 10' rods on the roof but I don't care. I'll burn about 4 gallons R/T for the Canal.

As for the boat, probably fewer pleasure cruises and more serious fishing. Definitely less looking for bait and more eels.

Nebe 04-27-2011 09:56 AM

$4.26 for 87 octane in ct .... Wow

.....gonna make sure the baby uses both sides of the diaper before a fresh one.......will have to combine trips to the store for diapers with fishin....Less trips to the canal for 3 hr tides as well. Already impactin me now. I don't take a daily ride down to the water (20miles r/t) just to make sure it is still there and recharge the soul.
It is gonna suck, but better than walkin every where.......I am gonna have to get a job.........

Lose the Diapers Completely....just follow the kid around with a Scoop and a Wal-mart bag.

macojoe 04-27-2011 11:09 AM

I need the truck to tow the boat and the camper, and getting a 2nd car is a idea but when you take in the cost of the car, gas, ins, reg, tax, and repairs what are you saving??
At $4 a gal I will spend $440 to fill the boat and thats about 4 trips depending were i go, I will stay close this year for most of my trips but there will be a few off shore trips for sure!!

Rockport24 04-27-2011 12:33 PM

Not too much will change for me, I usually never leave the north shore anyway, although, I might try to stay super local and avoid the 30 min trips to varous locales, but if the fish are there, I'll still go.

tautog 04-27-2011 01:11 PM

will definitely be adding an extra body to canyon trips to offset costs.

tysdad115 04-27-2011 03:15 PM

GMC Terrain ...30MPG, all wheel drive and a damn nice vehicle. I might know someone that can drive one whenever they want..:spam: :uhuh:

Saltheart 04-27-2011 04:49 PM

I made the nescessary changes in advance as most predicted this would happen. The hybrid gets 37.5 in the warmer weather (now until Dec) compared to the 17-18 the Blazer gets. Now one big issue is the 1 piece canal rod that normally fits inside the Blazer or in the roof rack. I'm hoping the new 2 piece century stealth 10 footer I got at the MSBA show will fill that role. If not its the 2 pc Century Tip Tornado light until the new 11 foot Stealth comes in.

Now if we have 3 or 4 people its back to the Blazer but its usually 2 so looks like the Hybrid may be the new fishing machine

MVbluefish 04-27-2011 05:25 PM

Glad the boat has a small 4stroke, not so happy about the SUV's V8. 15 mpg's makes you think twice about long distance traveling to try another spot.
