soon.. I've allready dragged the sled from the corner and been poking around with the gear..... I dont need much ice..this is one of my all time favorite pictures... this little guy got a half a jar of eggs before greed got the best of her... notice all the eggs spit up on the ice..

The Dad Fisherman 10-25-2011 11:15 AM

Started doing the same myself, been poking around and getting things ready...can't wait for the hardwater season. :kewl:

JackK 10-25-2011 11:22 AM

It's one of my goals to get a trout through the ice this year. Only thing I know is that a mealie tipped with salmon eggs is a good bait... But depth, distance from shore, etc is all greek to me.

Once the ice is safe.. I go every weekend.. your welcome to tag along...I fish almost exclusivly for salmonoids..

I'm ready to jig some lakers!! Very close second to striper fishing.

The stockies love a bit of earthworm just under the ice. Rainbows also love powerbait.

Jiggin' togue is one of my favorite winter activities...

im with you! got hooked on Sebago last year-that place is filled with togue.

Thanks. I'll definitely take you up on that- Maybe TDF will want to join, or even that bum Spinncognito (if we can ever get him out on the hardwater! :rotf2:)

Never caught a laker. I did the Sebago tournament two or three years ago... In a group of twelve, limit of traps each, we had one flag all day... And it was a salmon. Renamed lake Slowbago afterwards.

Sea of Atlas 10-25-2011 02:09 PM

The tourney is a zoo. I like to jig with glow airplane jigs or atomic bucktails tipped with sea smelt. Usually in about 100fow using a flasher, love watch them rocket from 100 to 40fow to smash a jig. I dont camp out, no fish in 15 minutes, i move holes.

If I can walk safely, I wouldn't mind tagging along either ...

JackK 10-25-2011 06:52 PM

At the very least I'm going to try and organize a few informal ice fishing gatherings- thinking Chebacco, Pleasant, Johnsons to name a few... Details at safe ice!!

Rockport24 10-26-2011 02:40 PM

Hey JackK, if you bring that beef stew you made at the S-B ice thing last year, I"m in!

I might actually break down and buy some traps this year....

Well this thread took a turn.....

Never fished on the ice... But did get new replacement innerboots for my Sorels delivered yesterday.

Will drive the shoreline for another week. Don't see a window for the boat, so going to haul out on Tuesday. That way the boat won't be on the street during Halloween...

Rockfish9 10-27-2011 07:27 AM

Sorry for the Hijack... but.. it looks like a get Nothshore get together is in order... I do most of my fishing in new Hampshire... but there are no shortage of fish north of Boston on the hardwater...

I've got plenty of gear for anyone that has never done it... I'm allready trapping bait for the season.... I'll start a north shore ice fishing get together thread...

saltyric 10-27-2011 07:33 AM

Ross- I hauled Tuesday.....Had the morning off, tides aligned. Always a sad day. Will be hitting the surf atleast once more and doing some scouting.

Rockfish- Count me in.

nightfighter 10-27-2011 07:52 AM

Might haul Sunday after looking at tides. 11 foot tide, high at 1421. Last day for launch service as well. Will give me enough time to powerwash and unload before dark. It is worse than first day of school as a kid.... The downside of a center console is its exposure in these temperatures. Really want to be in a pilothouse, even for the inshore codfishing. Time to ho some rides on other people's boats.

I got enough gear to take care of you Ross, I have a full setup for 2 anglers for a full day on the ice....besides I need to repay you for getting me hooked on stripers :hihi:

I'm getting psyched for it already....fired up the auger the other night to see if it would fire up, getting all the gear together and stopped by Cabelas and picked up some odds and ends that I will need.

Uhh, yeah. I have enough equipment for half of an ice fishing tourney. Last count was something like 40 tips.

me too.. my basement looks like down stairs in Kittery when I haul it all out..amazing what you accumulate through the years...

Clogston29 10-27-2011 06:41 PM

Surprised at all the ice talk. Trout and bass still hitting good now. Why wait for ice? The shocker and I had a good night bass fishing last night.

One more weekend with the boat, haul Sunday. Then a couple more tries in the surf. Have to admit, I don't last long in the low 40 degree weather though....getting old.

Clogston29 10-27-2011 06:55 PM

Nasty weather this weekend. Hoping for good weather next weekend. Got a sitter for Saturday day and night and planning to drive south for one last shot.

It's been quite a few years( just about 25) but I had a very memorable night off of the surf on Plum Island the day after thanks giving... all large fish.. it's just a matter of what you can endure..so it's not out of the question.. this time of year.. you have to be there when they show.. usualy no ryme or reason why or when they do...

Clogston29 10-28-2011 08:20 AM

that's definately true. back when we had more free time on our hands (pre kids), luds and I got into fish in the snow up in Marblehead one morning in late november when we decided to go just to get out for a bit. No fish showing, but picked them up on bucktails and storm shads worked slow and low. Nothing too big, but fun. Tough to justify those low probability kinds of trips now.

i set a goal of getting one every month for a calendar year (holdovers included) a few years back. got fish and marblehead in november and a few in december and january at the dam, but february got real cold and i quit.
