As for the gators down there ... we were canoeing in the no-motor zone in Everglades National Park on July 6 one summer in the late 1990s, hot as can be, buggy as can be ... but great fishing ... the one thing that was a bit unsettling was all the gators that would suddenly appear by the side of the canoe to get a close look at us ... it was kind of a pain, as you couldn't reach down to grab your fish, you had to yank them into the canoe by the leader for fear of losing your hand ...

I believe it's a MAXIMUM of 6 months at the State campgrounds. And for the ones near the ocean they often fill up on the exact day 6 months out. For example today you would be trying to make reservations that begin on August 19th. Reservations open at 9am, you'd probably be out of luck by now.

Paul - While you are still down in Florida - maybe take it to Bahia Honda State Park down in the Keys - it will be worth the trip if you have not done it.
