I'm alive, thanks for all the love. They have no idea wtf is wrong with me. All I can figure is that my broken wribs were waaaaay worse than they thought and I got some sort of bad ass blood infection that requires me to be in the 5 most bad-assed iv antibiotics known to man. 24 hours a day.
Love you guys. And they wouldn't let me eat or drink for the first 48 hours, either. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

I'm out...of the hospital that is...thanks to everybody. It was great to read all of the posts while I was in there; it was a looooong 5 days.
Ultimately, they never really figured out what happened. Basically they think I threw a clot that got lodged in my trapesius muscles and caused a huge swelling on my back (literally looked like I had a head growing out of my back). I then got a 102+ fever and they thought I could start going into organ shutdown at that point. Well, nothing ever happened aside from lots of drugs, tests, biopsies. There was a team of 10 doctors working on me. At one point, one of the two thoracic surgeons said I had a low blood count. I told him that they took probably 40 vials of blood out of me every day. He laughed. I'm at home now and should be back to work on Monday. Thanks! Rick |
Welcome home buddy glad to hear you got a hall pass from the doc's, you'd better rest up cause hitting a full week of work is gonna kick your arse!

I'm glad your out of the hospital, but I'll miss talking to you on my 9:30 break every morning. That last night story about your extremely gaseous room mate was pretty stinkin funny:jump1:

Sorry to hear man, glad you're out and victorious! Sounds like your cracked ribs poked a bit too far and gave you some internal bleeding. It happens when you bust a bone that makes RBCs that can cause a clot. To top it off you went septic. Very lucky this happened at this point in time rather than 20 years ago. Great to hear you walked out. Shoot me a PM if you need any help with after care since your body took a massive hit

I'm pretty much better at this point. I woke up with a crazy 102 fever this am, took some ibuprofen and cold medicine, and now it's gone.
What I think is that I'm off the hard-core antibiotics for the first time in 21 days, so maybe my system went a little nuts overnight. I took all the medicine like 5 hours ago. I'm fine now. Weird. I think I'm heading back to the gym on Saturday. Its a major milestone in the process for me (7 weeks after the fall). |
It's amazing that a small injury can have such far-reaching implications in regard to your health.
I had a case of cellulitis in my leg that turned septic, and spend 5 days in the hospital. It wasn't the fever that scared me, as I've had fevers before and I can usually deal with them with OTC meds. It was when my urine started coming out looking like black coffee that I realized I needed to go to the ER immediately. Seems my cellulitis, which is typically a skin rash, had gone under the skin and reached the vein/artery in my leg. When I was admitted they told me that my kidneys were on the verge of shutting down. After a 5 day round of pills and injections, I now have a permanent rash-scar on my leg and occaisional swelling of the leg, as the infection affected the blood vessels in that leg. The clincher for me was that after all the testing, poking and prodding they still couldn't tell me where the cellulitis came from? |
