But if they invested the time to follow him and nab him across state lines with MA also involved, they would have violated both RI's and MA's "DEM/EPO LAZY Act".

It happens but not enough. A lure builder up there got caught poaching and lost his license for 3 years.

MAKAI 09-20-2018 09:43 AM

License ??
We don’t need no stinkin license ! 👨🏻

Right! And that can carry some stiff penalties. However they would have had to coordinate with the MA authorities, since the RI authorities couldn't arrest him in MA.

Clammer 09-20-2018 11:21 AM

no they don,t .the feds would make the arrest ><

SilverKing 09-20-2018 01:49 PM

take the boat and attach the anchor he's not using to his ankle.......

bobber 09-20-2018 02:41 PM

its time to make poaching penalties hurt a little more. and to get judges to take these kinda things seriously...

for instance- 3 guys in CT were caught with 40-something stripers a few years ago. cops sued fish-sniffing dogs to find them all. all were shorts. only 1 of them had a license.

total fine was $25 for fishing w/o license. they were all seen back fishing 1 week later

Several busts in CT were tossed out due to lack of evidence. Apparently some attorney came up with the great idea that if the cops didn't have physical proof (video/photographic evidence) of the suspect stashing fish in the woods nearby then they could have been placed there by anyone. Now they have to catch them on video to get the charges to stick.

You don't think its a good idea to have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone is guilty?

MAKAI 09-21-2018 10:48 AM

Hey!!
What’s up with all the fish in the trunk of your car ?

I don’t know ? I didn’t put them in there. Someone else must’ve done it. Yeah....that’s it ! Someone else did it.

I find the need to provide video/photo evidence a bit much. Is the same required to prove possession in other infractions? To me a police officer saying he saw Joe Poacher stash 24 short striped bass in a burlap sack in the woods 20 feet from where he was seen fishing is evidence enough. I still trust the police, but perhaps that is because I live my life wholly above the law.

I think its IS REASONABLE that guys who were caught fishing in the immediate vicinity where fish are stashed illegally were the ones doing the stashing

I'm pretty sure you are misstating the issue. If a cop sees someone stashing a short, that's good enough. But its not good enough if he finds a burlap bag full of shorts 20 feet from a fisherman, without actually seeing said fishermen put a fish in the bag.

Exactly, otherwise it would be way too easy to "set up" a guy you don't like. For instance, I know BillyBob is going fishing at his favorite spot right after work, so I head out there before him "plant" the bag of shorts and wait to see him start fishing and then call the EPO anonymously.

If the guys name is BillyBob, shouldn’t he be fishing the CT river for catfish, sorry I know it’s a serious subject but I couldn’t resist😬

that same guy who sells to all the shops still? Those shops that buy from a know poacher? Those shops are just as guilty if you ask me. But guys keep buying his plugs, plus he was allowed into the collectors show last yr in Bourne.

Guilty of what? Poaching? Doing business with a known poacher?
Guilty of free enterprise capitalism?
A bit of a stretch there don’t ya think?

I’m pretty sure he must have taken his share of lumps but I am not in the loop so maybe not. I didn’t know he lost license for 3 years. Thanks Toby.

I just don't get it what's all this concern for a poacher. The way I see it is if someone steals a TV from my house its between that guy and me. However, a poacher steals from every one. And its not just that fish, its the potential of that fish. How many times could people enjoyed catch and releasing that fish? what about the legit commercial guys or the rec who wants a fish for their family. Lastly what about the future fish that could be produced by that fish? I would never purchase plugs from that individual. Furthermore I would think long and hard about patronizing stores that sell his stuff. And if I did need something from that store I would be tempted to express my feelings to the owner. Guess I am a mean guy or an internet troll. To me its black and white.

Slipknot 09-27-2018 02:14 PM

I don't know what concern it is you are talking about. I do not condone poaching but I am not going to blackball a shop, the shop owner did not poach fish. Life is about choices, you can choose to spend your money where you want. You can choose to be mean or a troll, no skin off my back. I am glad to learn that someone actually lost a license for once.

Sea of Atlas 09-27-2018 03:03 PM

I would never buy those plugs. Maybe he feels bad and has repented but why buy from him when you can buy great quality from stand up guys that really mean what they say and care about the resource.
