Sooo... Chef, whats in da bag mon?
Im moving out of the ex's place to bonnet shores today and tomorrow , ill let you guys know what is in my plug satchel later this week:D
So i moved into the new house in bonnet shores, what a relief to get away from the ex:D! The place was a mess when i moved in , had to get a cleaner which was a hassle putting my own money up. Nice pile of random garbage under the porch for me to take care of. Oh yeah and the basement wallleaks, soaking a 12 X 12 ft area:af: :af:!Anyway , back to the bag, first off i got a sweet back pack, a gaff, headlamp,30lb seagar flourocarbon leader, swivels and clasps. Tomorrow ill get to the plugs. Anyone fish bonnet shores before?
Bonnet is tough to get access. I know a guy, Nelson, who fishes it a lot. He claims he does very well but I have never fished it with him so I can't verify his reports. Seems like it's got to be good. Just down from Narrow and Anawan Cliffs so the fish should hang. If you are living there make friends with some of the locals. I do know that the access is a B*#tch and the cops patrol a lot because there are a lot of URI kids that rent..
It can be good, but access is a B*... I used to know people who knew people, but they are grad-y-ated and left...
Havent fished there a ton, but it was consistent when I went.... |
piemma, does nelson post on this site? If he does could you have him contact me? Rockhound you interested in showing me where you had your luck this summer?
A Cheferson...Get yourself a chart of narragansett bay and study it. Look at bonnett and follow the coast from bonnett south to say.... where the rocks end at the river mouth.... study it, look for holes, points, anything that will trap baitfish durring say a southwest wind. Personally I think that where you are is a underfished fished area and you will be rewarded for that.. Its underfished because the access is so limited. I know quite a few places that you can walk to from there, but I dont want to blow em on the net, so lets just say I'll just show you in person.....all I ask is a slot in your driveway from time to time:D:
Piemma- Nelson Valles? |
I Mimic Eben except on a larger scale... sand....... and think SE wind, (early in the SE, too long and it gets shot...)
And Chef, most of my time at the Bonnet was not this past year... most of my june-August fishing is boat based... but I do some shore fishing then.....
Ya sounds like a deal eben. Let me know when, my budy has my map in his old mans skiff, gotta get that out.
Sooo.... On with the plugs?!?!?

Late getting back to everyone. Eben, you got the right Nelson. Good guy and fun to talk to. Always has a story. Perhaps not all believable but entertaining none-the-less.
RIRock, I agree that a SE is best for that shore .SW it blows across. OK for the mouth of the River but not good once you get around the corner. |
nope no fish there;)
piemma , is nelson on this site? Anymore info you guys can give about my new neighborhood would be appreciated, pm if you want. And now the plugs!!
Here it is-2-3oz gibbs danny blue-white belly, 2oz gibbs pencil popper olive-silver belly, 1 3+oz yellow-white belly tattoo darter, 1 3+ oz bunker tattoo darter, 1 3+ oz blue-white belly tattoo darter, 1 8 inch 2 1/2 oz + blue white belly needle(i think it a gibbs)), 1 3+ oz black and silver scaled wooden lipped swimmer(not sure who made it), and last but not least 1 around 3 oz mackerel tattoo spook.   :bounce:
Chef... I forgot to tell ya, that was MY bag :D :D :D
Nice find..... Someone was an unhappy camper when they lost that |
I have never known Nelson to be on any site but if you go to Narragansett and hang around the Wall and Monahans you will meet Nelson. I believe he is part Native American.
BTW, nice find on the bag but I gotta tell ya, the guy who "forgot" that bag must have been smokin' stuff you can't get at Cumberland Farms. Sounds like close to the perfect surf bag. |
Wow you scored some nice plugs, enjoy you certainly put up a great effort to find the owner.
All these plugs were more then worth the effort i put into trying to find the owner, ill be putting my name and number with my gear.
Anyone have advice on terminal tackle for these plugs? Which to use swivels with and snap lock??
Thanks |
personal preference. I always tie direct. I have a Duolock snap on my main line then a Rosco swivel on my leader. My leader is 50# Florocarbon about 4 feet long.
Second that, although when the surf is up I use a snap, (not a snap swivel) and on some plugs it actually lets them swim better (read tattoo spook)
'hound |
Agreed. My 2 fishing partners do the same and these guys are a couple of the best surf rats on the coast
So i should tie a duolock snap to my main line then attach this to a swivel thats on a four foot 40-50lb flouro leader, then tie the leader directly to the plug, except whens the surfs up, them i should use a snap to attach the leader to the plug? What kinds of knots do you guys reccomend for the conections? I usually use braid, like spyderline. I dont wanna lose these sweet ass plugs to a crappy knot or too weak of leader. Any other info or advice you guys could pass on would be greatly appreciated.
I say yes to all you stated except the rub is the braided line. If your working line is braided I would tie and improved clinch knot. Then I would put a dab of Super glue on the knot. As for the flouro leader I have always used the improved clinch knot. Now some of the guys say to throw an overhand knot on top after you tie the improved clinch knot. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I have never have a knot slip or come undone with this knot. Some other guys use the Palomar knot which is about the same...different technique but same knot strength and never slips.
Hope this helps. Tight Lines Paul |
Thanks for the advice guys. Now on fishing these plugs, whats the best way to work them? I understand how to work them. I have darters( currents, right?), spook, pencil popper and a danny. Thanks
I think the best advice I can give is regadless of the plug, if you are fishing for Bass work the plug slow and I mean slow. Bluefish don't seem to care how fast you move but Bass want to be enticed into hitting. I work my swimmers so slow it's painful.
Nahh, Nelson knows about the site - has for a few years - but I don't have him pegged for a big Internet guy :) ... He does have a wealth of info and also a wealth of photos and tapes and documents about fishing Gansett going back many years...
Also a very nice guy |
And has some of the best stories...
Cheferson, I'm amazed that with all that custom wood that somebody didn't come back looking and see the sign, or hear about this post from someone. They must be bumming big time.
For swimming some of the lures, check out the article "Their wood is Good" on Joe Lyon's site, there is a little how-to on the darters and needles, and also search for the thread on this site for Tatoo's spooks, he gave a rundown on fishing them in there somewhere |
You may want to have John pull the link from the main page since you've ID'd the plugs and bag contents. You did the right thing but they are yours now.
Thanks for all the help and advice! ANyone else interested in showing me how to fish some new areas this season?
Thanks |
Went to the saltwater edge today to get some new hooks and ring plyers to put them on with, great selection of gear there and great staff. The man, the myth Iron Mike walked in as i was leaving, this guy seems like a character and a half, bet its a trip fishing with him. I could spend a fortune at this store, wanted a bunch of stuff!
