Leo & Keith - I think you two owe Sandman a dinner, a weegie board, and a bottle of some good Hootch. Who knew that Sandman could predict almost a month in advance that you two would win a truck and a boat :hihi: : http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripert...ad.php?t=26165

Fish On 10-17-2005 01:00 PM

Wow, you guys are great! Thank so much! Winning the truck is a really nice way to end the derby, but I must say I was already leaving a winner just having participated. This is an awesome tournament, for a great cause, on an island full of super folks, and it’s run like a clock by the derby committee, volunteers, and a fantastic array of sponsors.

This was my 8th derby and will likely be my only opportunity to fish it from start to finish due to a unique, one-time vacation benefit granted by my company. It is a time I will never forget. I highly recommend it even if you can only get down for a weekend or a week as I have done in the past and will likely be doing for future derbies.

There are so many people that I would like to thank personally for making this a unique, once-in-a-lifetime, experience. The encouragement and camaraderie given by all the folks on striped-bass.com has been extra special and the icing on the cake. I’m sure the site will make it into the local publications as Leo and I both shared our history on the site with all of the reporters. A personal thanks to Leo (drumcorpfan), Casey (tynan19), Dennis (striperjerk), and Tony (torlando), for making that first week such a great time, sharing your experiences, and starting my derby off like no one else could. A special thanks to Jim (sandman) for sharing your island knowledge and fishing techniques, fishing with me from boat and shore on many days, and many other things including being a good friend.

Leo, if you are ever looking for someone to split the cost of something again, a fishing house, a powerball ticket, whatever, please don’t hesitate to give me a call!

Nice going guys!

My Derby review....

All I can say was that I was fortunate enough to fish with both of these gentlemen during this derby. I fished a tide with Leo and crew, learned a few things about rigging rubba and introduced some of the guys to a couple of the more "private" north shore haunts. I know Leo and the guys all fished hard for the week they were here and it clearly paid off. The crew found some nice fish indeed! And, they hit the prime weather as well. It is not always that nice here. (like the last week). I was never really sure either of their fish would hold but once I saw the last weeks forecast, I knew their odds significanatly went up. Conditions were beyond difficult here the last week. In addition, this year, everything is also REALLY late. Leaves are still on the trees and are still GREEN! I remember past derbys driving to my boat in a sea of blowing orange leaves…not this year. My one friend said..."How can we expect to catch Striped Bass while we are cacthing Spanish and King Mackerels?!"

I also fished many days along-side or with Keith who made the extreme effort and stuck it out for the entire derby… all 35 days. I know his expense was significant especially considering the cost of marine fuel with some days burning some serious amounts, (not to mention lodging and all the other stuff) but it was a trip I am sure he will remember for quite some time! Just about every day I we spoke on the radio, and directed each other towards fish... and between us we covered some serious territory. From Nantucket, all of MV to Nomans to Cutty. We did a few night trips together and I know we each taught each other a few things that improved our fishing. When his significant other was on island for the week, my wife and me hooked up with them for a lovely up-scale Edgartown dinner that included a few cocktails and numerous fish stories. (I know it made the ladies happy and my wife said it was the most time she spent with me this derby!)

At the ceramony, both these gentlemen said some kind things about the derby volunteers, the sponsors, and some of the people they have met which I know mean a lot to the folks that put in a ton of time. Keith called last night and said that during his stay he really got to know a lot of the people in the event instead of just recognizing them and really enjoyed his entire trip. I know he would feel that way even if he didn’t win the Grand Prize but it sure puts the icing on the cake!!! Leo was both stunned and elated when the lock went "CLICK!" I am genuinely glad both for these guys.

All in all….it was a great time and I can’t wait till next year. I hope we can hook up again.

Catchem-up!!

Jim

BTW Vineyardhaven and Edgartown harbors have busted wide open with big albies today!! The albies are huge...14#+ (no BS) I heard of one going 15....ya just never know.

WTFG

Those of us who have fished the derby and those of us who have fished the derby know just what a special event the MVSB & B Derby really is. This year after changing houses and staying with a new group of guys my brother and I fished harder than we ever did before. Less social activities around the abode made for more time up on the beach with rod in hand.

It is abolutely the most awesome of occurences that FISHON and DRUMCORPFAN did what they did. Fishing the Vineyard can be the easiest fishing in the world or it can be the hardest. Either way, it is extrordinarily rewarding and that is so well short of winning vehicles and boats.

One thing that stands out here is that it sounds like Sandman put these guys on the fish. Is that true? And that NORTH SHORE hint..mmmm..sounded like someone throwing the rest of us off the trail for next year. Anyone for stashing a GPS in one of these guys boats or san sleds. They certainly are the go to guys for fishing info on the rock from now on. Again congratulations.....wtfg.

Raven 10-17-2005 06:32 PM

thats unbelievable

excellent !!! :btu:

Bill L 10-17-2005 06:33 PM

Congratulations to both of you, I can only imagine how you must feel! Awsome job! :claps:  :jump:

Mr. Sandman 10-17-2005 09:39 PM

swimmer,

That is not true. These guys put themselves on their own fish and caught it their own way. If you knew me you would know I don't throw curve balls or mislead others about who where and when. I'll either tell you or I won't. I just like to fish and be around others who are just as into it as I am. I enjoyed meeting and fishing with them. If you don't think I didn't try to bump either of them off the board...you really don't know me!! :rotf3:

Give me a call next derby, lets fish.

tynan19 10-17-2005 10:17 PM

Sandman, thanks for showing us those secret stealthy haunts and don't worry those roads were so confusing a blindfold was not necessary.

Swimmer, although Jim came over the house and gave us a quick history lesson and a little road direction I.e. access he did not just guide us to fish. We, the five of us studied maps and tide charts and debated each day and night what was our best bet. We also walked mile upon mile of sand and rock to get to the fish. We would also split up to cover double the ground. Everyone put in a lot of time and effort and came away with a story to tell the grandkids.

All and all I am so glad for Keith and Leo I am still in shock. Def. couldn't of happened to two better guys. My only question is how are they going to top it. :btu:
