We provide the networking gear (routers) that all of the IP (voice, video and data)traffic flows over.

MakoMike 08-28-2007 08:18 AM

Its being installed as I type. Report back later.

Adam_777 08-28-2007 07:26 PM

I got Cox for everything. No problems fair prices and they've had the fiberoptic backbone for a while just never made a big deal.I got 15mb down and 3mb up for net and Digital package.I don't watch TV so who cares about that.I don't Use the phone so don't care about that. The internet works always.Very rarely slows down.I was told if I want fios I would need to have an electrican install an outlet of some sort in my apartment .Thats b)115h17 so screw that I'll stay with cox cable.I hear verizon is just as good I'm sure you'll like it better than Comcrap.Never herd a good word about them.

Slipknot 08-28-2007 07:35 PM

I got it.
It saves me money.
the TV channels aren't as good but it is still worth it even if I want to add movies.

The people that we dealt with on the phones didn't give us what we wanted and we had to call and let then know about how we wanted it set up. That is why we wanted it in writing after we had decided on what we wanted but we never got anything in writing. It is all squared away now.

I think the picture might even be a bit clearer than cable. Now if someday I can afford to buy a real TV instead of the antiquated one, then I'll be able to see what all the hype is about high def.

MrHunters 08-28-2007 07:39 PM

does verizon do a la carte?

TheSpecialist 08-28-2007 09:16 PM

Verizon does'nt do Ala Carte to my knowledge. They also don't charge you extra for digital content. I don't do billing, just installation, and maintainence. It's new, and there a re bound to be glitches, and bumps in the road, but it will get better.

Gone fishing you can get a battery at any electrical supply that sells alarm equipment. If you are really having trouble finding one pm me. Just so you know, the battery is warrantied for 1 year, and then it is the customers responsibility. We were never told that it should last 3-4 years, but I am not saying that someone did not tell you that, that being said we don't know how long they sit on a shelf in a warehouse either. Also know that the Phone company spends an average of 2,500.00 per customer to get you this service, and you pay nothing for the Optical Network Terminal, Battery Backup Unit, Power Supply, or wireless networking router. You also pay nothing for the installation.

Here is a link where you can order one online: http://www.apexbattery.com/12-volt-8...batteries.html

Measure the size of your battery, it is a 12v 8amp hour battery

Fishin' Blues 08-28-2007 09:22 PM

Specialist, where you out of, Brockton?

I work PPM out of Summer St.

Slipknot 08-28-2007 09:34 PM

Gonefishin, I don't know why they told you you have to pay for the battery  maybe the person you spoke to was misinformed. The guy that installed ours said they replace them free, he even said he could give me one.

TheSpecialist 08-28-2007 10:46 PM

FB I work out of Woodrock RD I am sure you know where that is... :bl:

Bruce after the year is up they are supposed to charge you for the battery, that being said there are plenty of guys who are sympathetic to the needs of the customer

Fishin' Blues 08-28-2007 11:08 PM

You mean Woodwock Woad? Tell Carlton that Tom O. says hi.

I almost bid that job when those bids were out. I can't bear to go back to I&M.

I've been at Summer St for the past 7 years, before that I spent time on the Vineyard and Pearl St. Just had my 20th anny last week.

Bill, one year? well what if you have a 2 year contract?

MakoMike 08-30-2007 11:58 AM

Question for you Verizon guys out there, how difficult is it likely to be to pull back on a cable in an underground conduit to get a rope through and then pull the cable and the FIOS line back through the tube?

TheSpecialist 08-30-2007 12:35 PM

What size is the conduit, and what is in it now? Is there catv in it, or telephone cable?

Generally if it is a phone drop, we tie a string on and pull it through using the old drop, only downfall is if one breaks...

Bruce think of it like a cellphone plan, they give you the phone for just about nothing, and they usually have a 1 year warranty on the phone, but you usually sign a 2 year committment for the service. You will never have to worry about your battery though ;)

Fishin' Blues 08-30-2007 12:48 PM

If the catv and telco drops are in the same conduit, you might have a problem because they might be twisted. There's also the possibility that the drop needed to be repaired at some point and there's a splice on it.

A little elbow grease is probably all you'll need.

Lurch, are you at Juniper in Westford? We might be work neighbors.

MakoMike 08-30-2007 04:21 PM

Right now there are two CATV cables in the conduit. I was going to use one to pull two strings back through the coanduit and then use one of the string to pull the CATV cable and the FIOS cable back into the house. I'll leave one trace for future use. Do you guys use dish detergent to lube up the cables like we do with the coax when we have to run it through tight spaces on boats?

Fishin' Blues 08-30-2007 04:29 PM

Meh, if you can't get it going it might help. I've never personally used any lubricant but I guess it's not the worst idea in the world. Try doing it without the lubricant first. You'll just have a big mess.

The fire department in town uses our holes for their alarm cables and they always use lubricant. It makes a mess of the whole manhole. I bet they do it on purpose!:poke:

TheSpecialist 08-30-2007 07:55 PM

Mike if they try and pull the drop in and it is pre-connectorised then the connect barely fits in a 1" conduit, but it is doable. They can cut the connector off, and the drop will go, then they can splice on a connector at the house.

MakoMike 08-31-2007 07:06 AM

Righyt now all I have is about a 40 feet coil of FIOS cable at the base of the last pole, no connector on the end. It looks pretty thin and I think it should go with no problem. Actually all they asked me to do was to pull a trace through, and they said they would pull the cable.

UserRemoved1 09-02-2007 07:16 AM

MAKOMIKE here's how you do it...

Take a small piece of rag.... Tie it to a piece of polypropylene electricians pull string...this stuff is very lightweight but very strong. Stuff it in the conduit...go to the other end and take a standard vacuum cleaner and stick it over as much of the piece of conduit as you can...if it leaks then wrap a rag around it. It will suck the line right thru the conduit right beside what's there...in about 4 seconds your done.

On new conduit you can use a "mouse" that ties to the line and sucks thru, this is how I do it, but if your thrifty you can save yourself alot of time and aggravation....I do this stuff all the time and I can pull a cable in a 1000' conduit in about 5 minutes flat :hee:

Works on T top legs too :hee:

As far as dish detergent for pull soap...use the electricians pull lube...it dries to powder and makes less of a mess later on. You shouldnt need it if you got a helper. If it feels like it's getting tight then pull back and you should be able to move through the tough spot if you pull without stopping.

TheSpecialist 09-02-2007 03:52 PM

Mike what was the cause of the trouble, how did John fix it. They give you the hidef channels with a hidef box no xtra charge.

Clammer 09-03-2007 12:00 AM

Ya gotta ask John IDFK

I get a limited amount of HD channels & the box ain,t free >>> ..

thanks again Bill >>

MIKE

TheSpecialist 09-03-2007 02:58 PM

Mike nobody's boxes are free, we don't charge extra for the channels. If you already subscribe to a channel, and there is an HD equivalent they give it to you when you et a box. Concast charges for the box, extra for the digital service, and extra for the HD channels.

Clammer 09-03-2007 06:25 PM

Bill

if you look on line ..> they give you specific channels not all

if you want /in my opinion / the better HD channels /you have to pay extra ;;

right now the onlY One I feel makes a difference is NESN >>>>>>>>>>> personally ICGAF .if I watched the news in HD //

these ARE extra if I want to pay for them ;;

TNT
ESPN
ESPN2
NFL NETWORK
FSN--NE
DISCOVERY >>>which is the best / had it with Cox
National Geo
Plus 8 more @@

right now in the package is NESN ..great
NBC
FOX
PBS
CBS
ABC
PBS
& CW

with the quality I receive with the regular picture /ICGAF / if MSI, CSI, Rescue Me, ETC are in HD or not ;;

JUST M/O

TheSpecialist 09-03-2007 07:32 PM

Mike those HD channels you are saying you have to pay extra for, are free with an HD box with an HD box you get the HD Broadcast, and the HD Nationals. The only ones that are extra is the movie channels tha you have to subscribe to. If you are not getting those channels call in. You should have 20+ HD channels.

One person here just bought a lotus....MUST BE NICE!!

Maybe I should sell some more and by a ZB :)

MakoMike 09-06-2007 02:33 PM

Finally got it installed yesterday, pulling the trace for athe FIOS cable was a bitch! BTW- bought some of that wire puller lube, its not half as good as the old dihswashing detergent! The TV and internet looks GREAT!

MakoMike 09-12-2007 12:30 PM

Just have to say that now that its up and running, this combo of FIOS and my Samsung DLP are absolutely unbelievable. I thought the TV was great with cable, but this combo will just blow you away!

Fishin' Blues 09-12-2007 02:20 PM

Good to hear, man. We don't have it in our town yet.

zacs 09-12-2007 03:02 PM

i was ready to get FIOS, but the annoying sales people that come to my house every other day are beginning to annoy me.

Also, I for some reason they can't do three phone lines/numbers???? Whats up with that?

On the downside, Verizons on demand isn't as good as comcast. The other thing to be aware of is your phone will change to VOIP from copper, and is then reliant on you having power. They install a UPS so you'll have phone during shorter outages, but if you lost power for a long time, I think you'll lose phone eventually.

you r right about the Phone the battery is only good for 3 hours :spin:

The HD box in itself costs extra.Nothing's free.It costs extra.

Standard Cox Digital already comes with 20 Hd channels as long as you've an HD capable TV.Movie channels you'd have to pay for anyways.

Verizon(w/fios) has a very, very long way to go even to possibly be competative with established companies like Cox in either the business or the residential field.

I spent way to many years dealing with verizon phone,DSL and satellite tv.When Verizon can do something better than make FIOS that much faster than my already existing business internet and provide even slightly better tv and phone service,I might switch but the price would have to be right.

TheSpecialist 09-12-2007 08:26 PM

Every company charges extra for an HD box, they cost the companies more money. Verizon does'nt charge extra for digital service like other companies, they also offer many channels with their package that you pay extra for with other comapnies. The product speaks for itself. Are there going to be bumps in the road, absolutely.

BTW I have worked for a major cable company, and have done Direct tv, so I know the difference and I know the better product.
