Notaro, just a word of advice dude.

Maybe you should post ONE BIG REPLY instead of 10 replies 1 to answer some ones questions

Do what i USED TO DO, create "Novels" and not little one liners Belive me, i got in alot of trouble for posting like i used to (as you can see ) NOW I KEEP IT SHORT , no more novelz
Notaro, what I would recommend is that you really think about what you want to ask first. So think it out a bit and then post a somewhat short & concise post on what you are looking for too. Other than that - search the forums, read the books, yada yada...

One of these days we'll also get some How Tos in that new How To section that will help a bit...

Thanks & good luck! Don't take this as being a negative but a positive... Please don't right novels - the headaches are too intense.... :p

one thing i would suggest that a one do when targeting blues or when blues are around in large quantities w/ little chance at stripers is to remove all trebles and use a single hook in the rear of the lure. bluefish almost always hit a bait from behind and chop it. having a lure w/ 3 sets of trebles on it is just wrong. we all know how blues seem to fight and thrash more when you try taking a hook out of their mouths. put 3 sets of trebles in there and you have a mess. a lot of people rip hooks out of blues or could care less. this is inhumane. with one single hook in the rear of the lure it makes for an easy release.

this also brings up another topic and that is pliers. do you have a pair of pliers that can cut a 4/0 treble hook? if not, you should. i had to cut a treble hook out of a friend's hand last year after a blue started thrashing around and the treble was burried. i've cut many hooks out of fish due to the barb being wedged into the cartilage of the jaw. i'd rather cut the hook than rip it out of a fish. i'm not sure on the power/cutting ability of vs pliers, but i do know manley's work well. a pair of long needlenose pliers work when you have a hook deep in a fishes jaw.

as far as lures to use when targeting just blues i'd suggest roberts rangers, atom poppers in all sizes, hab's poppers, kastmasters/tin/metal, and jigs.

Notaro 02-07-2003 03:03 PM

bassmaster 02-07-2003 06:07 PM

There are times when Blues get picky, usually when there "finning" they are hard to piss off.
and at times they will only take a slower worked plug rather than a fast retrieve.
the toothy bastages

Mike P 02-07-2003 09:25 PM

If all else fails, just throw out either the biggest, juiciest live eel in your bucket, or else throw the rigged one you spent half an hour getting "just perfect". The most picky blue in the world will come on the run ;)

vineyardblues 02-08-2003 09:29 AM

ANy BM plug should catch blues :)

JohnR 02-08-2003 09:49 AM

SSX - you have little room to bust on Notaro ...

Notaro - see, you can reply to several people using the same post... There are all kinds of things you can use on them but try not to spend a lot of money. You can use simple stuff and get the same results...

Everyone - Please don't egg the young guys on - you know what they say about encouragement...

fishweewee 02-08-2003 11:16 AM

Man, someone busts on Bassmastah's bloofish plugs and we don't hear a single thing from him? :smash:

and i'm not saying i don't post alot, damn i don't shut up :eek5: But i don't do 10 replies to one person @ a time :smash: and when told not to do something, I don't.... So i think i have a little more room here ;)

It's OK notaro :D

Don't take fishing advice from me cause i'm only 16 but i have caught many bluez

BLUEFISH WILL EAT ANYTHING pretty much. I rigged a soda can w/ hooks and thruwire & used it as a popper  caught a nice blue to...

Kastmasters,

NEXT2NUN 02-08-2003 01:52 PM

Hey BM, Was that fish so big you had to drag it up the beach with your buggy? Whats all those marks on it's belly?

bassmaster 02-08-2003 01:54 PM

the water is about 3 feet away from the blue.I just needed a ruler pic and tossed it Back.
marks???? i dont know? ask the fish:D

LINESIDES 02-08-2003 02:01 PM

I will try to make this as painless as I can! Take a metal tea spoon. Drill a hole in the handle big enough to thread through the handle. “NO HOOK” They will hang on all the way back to the boat, shore, pier, or what ever you are fishing from! You can also paint it if you will think it will help.
Later

vineyardblues 02-08-2003 02:12 PM

Bluefish Guide = $$$$

JHABS 02-08-2003 02:35 PM

thewaterfordstriper 02-08-2003 05:06 PM

i rememebr reading in bob post's reading the water a guy (can't remember who) was catching bluefish with a toy boat that had a treble attached to it. those things get going and watch out

cuttyhunter 02-08-2003 06:44 PM

bluefish are dumb but fun...

During a past fall blitz, a buddy of mine won some cash by betting another surfcaster he could catch a bluefish with a beer can (Budweiser, of course). All it took was poking a whole through the bottom of the can, feeding through a metal leader, attaching a treble hook, dunking the can in the water to fill it up (weight to fly), and slam! One cast, one dumb blue...

I usually have my fill of bluefish after I catch my first of the season unless I can get into some primal 15-20 lbs. monsters.

One October night surfcasting on Nantucket I was trying to dislodge my favorite Gibbs pencil popper from a chopper when I sunk a jagged infectious bluefish fang into a knuckle. Nice...deep....gash... Bandaid anyone? Well it turns out that bastard blue left some kind of viral bateria in my knuckle long after the gash healed. I could hardly bend my index finger for several months. It took a month of antibiodics and a year more to fully regain full motion. Needless to say, I've never really like blues since. However, I am friendly with smoked bluefish...
