This isn't so hard !!! :uhuh:
I didn't get in on this but about the same time you guys started this tread for the 1st time in my life I decided to start watching what I eat and drop some pounds. Been feeling like crap a lot and tired !
Did some reading up on what to do and came to the conclusion you don't diet, you make life & eating habit changes !
Told my wife to completely change what she feeds me and have been eating nothing but whole grain, wheat, fish, veggies & fruit.
Started a bit after the 1st of the year @ 217
Last time I stepped on the scale about a week ago 203
Plan to get down to below 190 (maybe 180) and stay there !

That right there is the hard part....nicely done though getting down.

I've changed a lot of what I eat....big key is to not just give up because of a bad day.....just get right back at it.

You are right Ronnie, I started eating a bowl of Special K with fruit in it, and a small lunch. Dropped off all the snacking and primarily drinking water now.

The Dad Fisherman 02-01-2010 05:15 PM

Switch to Frosted Mini Wheats.....Higher in Fiber and Protein than Special K....it will keep you feeling fuller for longer

or go all out and switch to oatmeal (real oatmeal, not instant) with some walnuts and berries. much better for you than any cereal. Slower digesting grains, lots of antioxidents in the berries (blue berries or raspberries are good) and some healthy fats that will keep you full in the walnuts. Special K is crap. Really all cereals are crap. You're essentially eating a bowl of crackers marketed as being part of a nutritious breakfast.

if your cholesterol and bp numbers are good, just switch to eggs. An omlete with veggies and no cheese will do more for your weight loss than any grains will. And don't buy into the "you can only have two egg yokes a week or you'll get fat and die" crap - eat the whole egg. I eat about 2 dozen eggs a week and my cholesterol is lower than the recommended healthy range by a good amount and my bp is right where it should be. Fat is not bad for you.

Oatmeal is my weekend meal.....I mush up a banana, throw in some Raisins, Walnuts and a touch of honey....good stuff.

Don't have time in the morning to cook oatmeal....did the research on the cereal and found that the mini wheats are a good source of fiber and protein for the bang and they don't taste like plaster. quick and easy

Special K is crap.....most cereals are as you said. Gotta read the labels.

bottom line is that if you want to lose weight you gotta limit calories....period. doesn't matter what you eat it matters how much of it you eat.

The whole wheat, anti oxidant, low fat, low cholestorol, no trans fats...offer other health benefits but weight loss isn't really one of them.....if you eat 5000 calories a day in fruit and veggies you still won't lose weight.......you'll probably feel better because of the vitamins and minerals you are taking in versus empty calories....but it isn't helping with weight loss

Biggest thing someone can do to lose weight is portion control....eat the amount the label says....that and move around...sitting around and just watching what you eat isn't going to get much done either.

Clogston29 02-12-2010 10:21 AM

true. calories in vs. calories out will get the weight off, for a while. it definately works (subway diet or taco bell diet anyone?), but there are more efficient and healthier ways to tweak the principle. depending on your goals though you can gain alot of benefits by manupulating protein / carb / fat proportions and incorporating strength training while on a caloric deficite. if you want to specifically target fat loss, rather than weight loss, for example you'll want higher protein and fat with less carbs and a good amount of heavier weight training. if you don't want your matabolism to crash, which will almost certainly lead to weight gain after the "diet" is over, you won't want to go too low on the calories or lose too much muscle mass while dieting. most people assume that when they're losing weight that it means they're losing only fat. its simply not true. a good portion of the weight lost on traditional american diets (cut calories and increase cardiovascular excercise with the goal of creating a 1000 kcal per day deficite and lose 2 lbs per week) comes from loss of muscle mass. this slows metabolism and is a significant factor in all of the yoyo dieting people do (along with low will power and the idea that once your "done" with the diet that you go back to eating how you used to).

233 went back up, but started P90X yesterday, lets see if i can keep up with it... :smash:

I am not looking for sympathy here, but I have stayed the same. Hurt my back which took about four weeks before I could hop back on the treadmill. Second day on the treadmill the control board shorted out. Se la vie! Waiting for new board, should be here Monday, via Brown. The I'll get skinny.:uhuh:

Getting nowhere - 235. Spent 2 weeks on the road for work. You can't lose weight on the road. In fact you can't "not gain weight". Can we make this longer?
